NEW DELHI: Pakistan is ‘perilously close’ to becoming a failed state and is already ‘pretty dysfunctional,’ a senior Indian government official has said.

Home Minister P. Chidambaram also voiced fears that the rise of the Taliban in neighbouring Pakistan could have a spillover effect on India, AFP reports.

‘I do not think it (Pakistan) is a failed state but if it does not arrest the decline, it is perilously close to becoming one,’ he said in an interview on India's CNN-IBN network to be aired late Monday.

‘It is pretty dysfunctional today,’ Chidambaram said.

Asked if India has a stake in ensuring stable civilian rule in Pakistan, he replied: ‘Of course a stable civilian democratic government means that we know who we are dealing with and there are checks and balances.’

He added that the rise of the Taliban in Pakistan ‘will encourage fundamentalists in India to imitate them, and number two the Taliban could become a sponsor of terror in India.’

‘Therefore, I do not think we in India can view this lightly. We have to take this as a very serious and grave development,’ he said.

Asked whether there was already concern that Taliban influence in Pakistan was encouraging fundamentalists in India, he said: ‘Yes, fundamentalists of both kinds.’

When asked whether he meant both Hindu and Muslim, he replied, ‘Yes.’

This interesting statement has been dispatched exact next day, when United State agreed to talk with Taliban (ex taliban ambassador Mullah Zarref). And back channel diplomacy is going on and President Obama announce to withdraw from Afghanistan in next few years.
I think the end of all Indian consulate along Pak border is coming soon.

Really? India has been saying this since Pakistan came into existence from day one.

The difference may be that now India is saying that it does not want Pak to become a failed state and that they have a stake in having a stable Pakistan.
Very different from Indira Gandhi's views.
(BTW, I thought Nehru wanted a stable Pakistan after it was formed - i never heard him say Pak a failed state etc. )

I dont understand what wrong Chidambaram has said. After all there hasnt been even a single "reassuring" incident in Pakistan since the crisis has began. Their president has admitted it, their former president has admitted it. CNN and BBC are running one hour specials each week titled "Saving Pakistan". I think Chidambaram is being optimistic when he says what he has.

Bit too optimistic. US pulling out doesn't mean end of diplomatic relation with Afganistan

Actually things are pretty interesting right now.

DAWN.COM | World | US asks India to support Pakistan on extremism

Dawn is reporting that US is asking India to help Pakistan to clamp down on extremism. US is also welcoming Indian involvement in Afghanistan. Add to this Indian ministers statement that a strong Pakistan is in India's interest and I think we can officially say that things have done a full 180 degree turn from the 1980's.

Symbian, give some proof before you utter something. Dont talk from your behind.

We can not deny pakistan is in a stage where - things are very difficult. But I seriously think a (hypothetically) failed pakistan. will be of a grave danger to india. India dont want this boundry of pakistan to be perforated by extremist.
At the same time, looking at the history. Pakistan been through worst situation and came out strong. And Pakistan is not "SOME COUNTRY" a nuclear capable country with a big mark on world map. People who think it will dissolve just like that, are not just ignorant but also making mockery out of themselves.
Pakistan have came out of these times before and they will come out again. I think they need a HERO in these times of crisis. And Pakistani youth is quiet capable of it. Youth need to wake up to pioneer their country.

you are right actually only new generation can reform Pakistan but they have to follow path of liberty and development instead religious rigidness. today Pakistan need a young political lobby which is strongly in favor economic development. there may be a time where religious faith can clash with development route and that's the time where right decision need to be taken. if they can do that it would be new rising of Pakistan.

I completely agree with you, pakistan has a potential more then the half population is under 20 or 30. All we need is a good new political leaders, which are not corrupt and actually care about their country.

Well only during such times Heros are born. But more over there is need to reform - the media , law structure , people's consious , religious understanding, love to your country, COunting down what you need as according your need of hour.
Path is cold and dark but you see the light on other side of tunnel.

heres a break down on pakistan population.
Age Breakdown; 46% under 15, 25% 15 to 29, 14% 30 to 44, 9% 45 to 59,

71 % are bellow 30. With a proper education and if they try to stay away from madrases, pakistan will have a great future.
