Nice to see Pakistan showing solidarity with their Chinese brothers by refusing to evacuate those stuck in the endemic zone. It appears that she is willing to cement the ties with China even at the cost of the lives and future of young Pakistanis living in China.

What we know at this stage: this is still obviously a very active outbreak and information is being updated and changing by the hour. It is clearly still centred in China with the overwhelming majority of cases still being reported from China. However, there are 71 cases reported in 15 other countries. Of note within those cases is that the majority of those cases apart from six are associated with travel to China and, of those, the vast majority of those cases are associated still with travel to Wuhan. We’re continuing to learn more about the virus, but in doing that learning, as I said, we know that the intense epidemic is centred in Wuhan and Hubei.

We know that many people are experiencing a minor form of illness, but still 20% of reported cases are reported as severe and 2% of confirmed cases are reported to have died. The disease is obviously mainly respiratory disease passing via droplets from one person to the other and mostly still through close contact. The source, as we’ve said before, is still unclear and the investigations continue in that regard. Prevention of this disease is based very much on what we recommend for respiratory illnesses in general in terms of keeping distance from people who are sick and the use of respiratory and hand hygiene. Much information is available on that on our website and has been disseminated to member states and the public and Maria Van Kerkhove, who’s with me here, can give more detail on that. Clearly we want people who are sick, especially those with coughs and difficulty breathing, to seek healthcare as soon as possible.

Initial fatality numbers don't tell true case fatality
As with the 2009 pandemic, initial reports from Wuhan described small numbers of both deaths and cases. On January 20, there were six deaths out of 282 confirmed cases. By January 28, there were 106 deaths from about 4,500 confirmed cases.

These numbers taken alone suggest a case fatality rate of around 2%, very high for a respiratory virus. But the true number of infected individuals circulating in the population is not known and is likely to be much higher than 4,500. There may be 50,000 or 100,000 additional cases in Wuhan that have gone undetected, and, if this is the case, it would put the case fatality of 2019-nCoV infections in the range of 0.1% to 0.2%.

Had this happened under any other government then our current PM would be on top of a container demanding the Pakistanis be brought back and cared for.

But now that he is in power, you dont hear him say a single word on this.

Shoulds don't always work in the real world. What needs to be done has to be done; if some people don't feel ok about it then I really don't think their comfort should be the number one priority. In such a time, i'd have taken the line of action that's being taken. This is not a political issue; don't make it one.

Say whatever emotional or otherwise. Every state has an obligation. Quarantine sites and medical facility should be made available. Anyways. IK might have to pay politically too if he doesnt do something about this crisis.

And the guy is so optimistic about GOP doing something in comments.

This unusual step from Pakistan ain't a scientific solution as well. There are healthy young Pakistanis stranded in the endemic zone, who are at an increasing risk of contracting the disease each passing day they stay there. It is not as if all the Pakistanis in China needs to be isolated or quarantined. A basic screening procedure upon their arrival can segregate healthy patients from the apparantly symptomatic ones within hours who can then be dealt accordingly.

Right now, prevention of the transmission of infection is the only effective way. By leaving them in China at the mercy of fate, your Government is showcasing its gross incompetence.

Sir how different is this virus from dengue, Eloba etc as per your assessment? What is basically the cause of this virus or its cause is yet to be known?

I am not an infectious disease specialist so it would be wrong to comment on this. However, as per the assessment of senior doctors, it is only different because it is a new strand of virus which we haven't encountered before so we aren't 100% sure on the most effective way to treat it. However, it is less deadly than Ebola and Dengue as far as I'm aware. I will comment more when I get to do some more research on this.
