Pak trial of terror suspects should match that of India: Saudi media

By: Rizwan Khan
Dubai: A prominent Saudi daily has lauded the quick and 'fair' trial of Ajmal Kasab convicted for the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks and expressed the hope that it will be matched by Pakistan when it tries seven accused of complicity in the attack.

''This trial was handled fairly and efficiently,'' the Arab News said in its editorial today.

''Though some Pakistanis still choose to believe, against all the evidence, that Kasab was in some way innocent, there can be little doubt that from graphic testimonies ...and the chilling images which depicted him in Mumbai’s main railway station, Kasab was one of the terrorists,'' the editorial said.

''India has therefore delivered a dispassionate legal process which incidentally acquitted two Indian Muslims accused of aiding in the attack. We hope this will be matched when Pakistan tries the seven alleged members of the Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group for involvement in the Mumbai outrage. India is already doubtful about the effectiveness of this prosecution, not least despite New Delhi’s protests, the group’s leader Hafiz Muhammad Saeed has not been charged,'' the Arab News noted.

Saudi Arabia has traditionally backed Pakistan over India on political issues and was one of the only two countries to recognize the Taliban government of Afghanistan when it came to power initially.

However, after 9/11 facing terror attacks from Al Qaida, the Kingdom redrew its policies and openly distanced itself from terror groups. As a corollary, this has brought Saudi Arabia closer to India in recent months.

The editorial noted that Kasab deserved to die for his 'merciless crimes' but argued that martyrdom to him may attract more youths to his path. However, if he is imprisoned for the rest of his life, he may be persuaded to admit his wickedness and warn other youth from taking the terrorists' path, it concluded.

Wow, 2 years taken to come to a verdict which was known to everyone on the first day, and the trial is called a good trial.

And would be better to paste the saudi source, compared to the Indian source as without that there is no reliability in this source.

The visit from the PM to Saudi has paid of well..

Wow, Saudi the root of all ill in our society, a country which sponsors the madrassa's and bankrolls them is commenting on this. This is just amazing, i guess money talk BS walks.

I feel ashamed of the Saudi fan boys we have in Pakistan, they caused all this to flourish in the poor neighbourhoods of muslim countries and no one has taken acion against them.

I have said time and time again, Saudi Arabia is the root of problems and they further their agenda through their oil money. India can have them, they are your allies now.

Qasab's conviction - Arab News - Editorial

India should learn lesson from this by moving wheels of court system faster

There are many lessons to be drawn from the conviction yesterday of Mohammed Ajmal Amir Qasab, the only survivor among the 10 gunmen who, in November 2008, massacred 166 people and maimed hundreds of others in Mumbai. One lesson is that the notoriously sluggish wheels of the Indian court system can be made to move notably faster.

This trial was handled fairly and efficiently. Though some Pakistanis still choose to believe, against all the evidence, that Qasab was in some way innocent, there can be little doubt that from graphic individual testimonies of over 600 witnesses, coupled with the chilling images which depicted him in Mumbai’s main railway station, Qasab was one of the terrorists. He even confessed in court though later withdrew the confession, claiming he had been tortured. India has therefore delivered a dispassionate legal process which incidentally acquitted two Indian Muslims accused of aiding in the attack. We hope this will be matched when Pakistan tries the seven alleged members of the Lashkar-e-Taiba terror group for involvement in the Mumbai outrage. The Indian government is already doubtful about the effectiveness of this prosecution, not least despite New Delhi’s protests, the group’s leader Hafiz Muhammad Saeed has not been charged.

In the coming days the Indian court will announce Qasab’s sentence. The majority of Indians expect him to be condemned to death for his heinous crimes. Yet the Indian government might think carefully about commuting that sentence. The argument would be that Qasab was fully prepared to be shot and killed as he committed mass murder. No doubt the Lashkar leaders who chose him for this evil task promised that he would be considered a martyr.

Qasab is now 22 years old. His behavior in court has demonstrated considerable immaturity, with him on occasions crying, on others joking. If the enormity of what he and his fellow terrorists did was dawning on him, he generally tried to cover it up with an unconvincing insouciance. For his merciless crimes, Qasab undoubtedly deserves to die. However, if he is imprisoned for the rest of his life, he may come to admit to himself the unspeakable wickedness of what he did. If then he were prepared to admit this publicly and warn other young people against the lure of terrorist recruiters, he might have done one good thing in his life. His execution, however, will just feed the odious myth of martyrdom and maybe attract other youths to follow in his blood-soaked footsteps.

One lesson has, however, not been learned. As a result of the security failures around the Mumbai attacks, the government has created the National Investigation Agency to consolidate security countrywide and it has established four federal commando hubs, from which crack anti-terrorist units can be dispatched to confront any terrorist attack. Unfortunately the major change that everyone admits is necessary has not yet taken place. India’s police remain poorly trained, poorly paid and poorly motivated. Until the quality and pay of this force is increased, India’s frontline against terrorism will remain dangerously thin.

brother,

its not about allies or foe but the rational thinking. The Saudis are praising good work and asking Pakistan to do the same is it wrong??

I just have a query about the Hypocrisy when a Pakistani arrested in US for new york bombing all the Pakistani are saying hang him and also calling him bastard etc. etc.

But in Kasab's case they don't do the same because it is related to India.

Why double standard and Hypocrisy ?????????

What else you expect? Shoot the person without giving him a fair trail??

This is not pakistan buddy.

DAWN.COM | Pakistan | Missing persons issue more serious than NRO

COURT- SC seeks consolidated list of missing persons till May.

P.S. This is not a troll. Making fun of Indian judicial system and legal process is a real troll. Suggest you to modify your statement first before deleting a reply to it.

And what India is, we all know. Were the 60,000+ alone in Kashmir and counting getting free and fair trials before they are sent to their graves ??

Should i get more from rest of India.

As told, do not troll and derail the thread, keep to the topic.

And as per making of fun of judicial system, that I am not, what I was pointing out was that from day one everything was clear, the pictures, the video and his grabbing by the Police guys was enough to tell who was guilty, the 2 year drama was not required, or the 600 witnesses, as there was sufficient proof there, so what i said was the trial should have been over within 1 month at the most, not 2 years for such a clear cut case.

brother,

If it were about rational thinking then Saudi's would not be financing madrassa's in Muslim countries. They should correct their own wrong doings that have in my opinion started with them, it is like I paid you to kill someone and when you have done your job, I congratulate your victims for dealing with you properly.

No one pays these madrassa's and mosques except for the dollars that find their way from Saudia, I have a problem with that.

Salaries of all govt officials including the police forces has been increased by nearly 100% with the implementation of the sixth pay commission report.

Is it not Taimi??he has given chance to explain his side and every aspect of the case has been scrutinized ..and even though the general public was against still he has given a prosecutor..Every body knows it was him .still the law takes it own time to get to the verdict .Is this shows the fair trial given to him??

Same can be asked from you guys, as why double standards and hypocrisy from the Indian side.

And as for Kasab's case, well his crime is not debatable as he played his part in that crime, but the debatable thing is the circumstances and the whole drama played out.

So that you may come later and say that Kasab was unjustfully scapegoated?

And for the so called "clear cut case", it was also evident from day 1 that kasab was a pakistani national why did your govt, army, isi kept on denying it for months?? IsI threatening locals of kasabs village not to identify him in front of Media??

Wasnt it a clear cut case then??

In India rule of the Land rules.
