KARACHI: Pak Suzuki has announced its plans to start local production of Suzuki Alto 660cc by 2018 to replace its iconic Mehran 800cc.

The information was shared with the Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production which was visiting Pak Suzuki Motor Company Limited (PSMCL) plant on Thursday.

The Senate committee asked the auto assembler to introduce global standard safety features in its new model.

The Senate delegation was led by Senator Hidayatullah and included Khalida Parveen, Kalsoom Perveen and Chaudhry Tanvir Khan. Additional Secretary, Ministry of Industries and Production, Sher Ayub Khan and Engineering Development Board CEO, Tariq Ejaz Chaudhry also accompanied the delegation. Sources said the company has already started the process of localisation of parts for the new 660cc car with local vendors.

The company in its presentation to the delegation unveiled its future plans regarding introduction of Celerio 1,000cc by March 2017 in place of Suzuki Cultus. The company had introduced Suzuki Cultus in the year 2000, replacing Suzuki Khyber.

The car assembler would also introduce imported Suzuki Grand Vitara SUV and 1,300cc Sedan Ciaz in 2017. Based on feedback, the company would consider assembling these vehicles in Pakistan, sources added.

Pak Suzuki had discontinued Suzuki FX 800cc in 1988 and introduced Mehran which had not seen any turbulence in its sale trend despite influx of used imported cars of 660-1,000cc.

Sources said the standing committee noted that local vendors are not in favour for discontinuation of Suzuki Mehran due to brisk sales of parts and accessories and its localisation content of over 70 per cent.

Pak Suzuki management briefed the committee that in its existing plant, investment of over Rs15 billion has been done.

The Senate delegation also visited Indus Motor Company (IMC) on Thursday.

The delegation was briefed about the various aspects of lMC such as production capabilities, localisation progress and the impact of the auto industry on the economy of Pakistan.

It is meant to be replaced in 2016 but still booking not started although I have seen some vehicles in Saddar, jamshed road, Karachi in use of people in different colours specially in black and silver.

Suzuki needs to be taught lesson by consumers because they are selling 30 year old model in high price and pathetic safety and features.

Enough ugly look to kill me.

With arrival of more efficient, computerized electronic engines, cc is not that much relevant today as it used to be.
We used to connect power of engine directly with cc, but it's not the case now. cc is unit of volume not power.
This new 600cc produces 60 hp, while old 800cc produces 40 hp, and yet more efficient in fuel consumption.
Though it's equally ugly.

Its total loot.replacing one tin cabin with other.
Minimum replacment should be with suzuki swift or latest generation of alto.1000 is a must. 600 cc may not give a good ride with less bhp n less torque.

It's better then Mehran but its definitely not good looking, even 2006 Mira looks better.
Better than because it will be a fuel efficient and some modern gadgets will be placed in it.
Unlike mehrans AC buttons and a embarrassing dash board

I hope its that newest 8th generation alto that also has a turbocharged engine and gives a staggering 38kmpl of mileage, its going to be an instant success,

RIP MEHRAN 1988-2016

Looks like suzuki finally felt the preseure and heat from the new auto policy alongwith the news of entry of tonnes of Chinese manufacturers,

They basically are revamping their whole lineup of passenger cars replacing those vintage cars with new ones as well as adding new cars like ciaz

Ciaz can be the direct competitor of The segment dominated by just Honda City

This means competition!

The future looks bright

In India Suzuki sells the maximum number of cars But that doesn't mean that Indian Manufacturers and other Japanese, Korean, European and American are at risk.

In fact all major Auto makers have production plants in India because of cheap Labour.

If your government gives incentive to Foreign Auto makers then of course they can come and give competition to Suzuki. OR you can invite Chinese companies which can definitely outsmart likes of Suzuki

True, but you must take it in consideration that they may well put new model through throats of Pakistani people next 20 - 30 years, can you bear that model that long?

Please don't bring India in this thread, things are very different in both countries.
