For auto industry, India 1'st built steel industry.
Then, small motors and pumps for farming along with bicycles, scooters, mopeds.
Then, motorcycles, tractors, 3 wheeler's, jeeps, trucks and vans, buses and cars; much of it by pvt. sector and some govt. sector.
Further, govt. decided to give the sector a firm kick in the back side when they opened up the economy in the 90's. The govt. department that picked and ran with Suzuki created fan jobs and opportunities for self and kids, friends and family and eventually sold govt. share back to Suuzuki and the public for near $ 1/2 Billion all white transaction in favour of the govt. And scaled up the Indian auto scene, seeded a new city called Gurgaon, and further Manesar. In so many ways, Suzuki India's story is the story of post reform Indian economy.
All of the above created the world's biggest Co.'s. in said fields. Think Motherson Sumi, Bharat Forge, TI Tubes, Roots India Ltd., Rane Grp., among lakhs is sub, sub-sub and local type batch suppliers often working out from road sides and gullies.
Global co.'s came calling on that base. Some local co.'s jumped in and had to Globalise to compete.
Presently, India hosts some of the world's largest auto sector companies, the energy is such that Anand Mahindra just turned $ Billionaire. His uncle Keshub is in the same league, both independent of each other. Anand Mahindra is the 3'rd gen. scion of the Mahindra Jeep Co., among the biggies of the Indian auto game and top 3 Global tractor manufacturer.
Many more crorepatis are in the making in India's shining auto industry.
