Opinion: The time for equivocating about a nuclear-armed, Taliban-friendly Pakistan is over

Truth is, there will be NO sanctions on Pakistan as this would give the green light to make some hardliners the leaders of Pakistan. This would be many more times more worst than the american/nato defeat in Afghanistan considering Pakistan is a fully fledged and growing nuclear weapons state. However, we will be on the fatf grey list for a long time now.

Yes I do see his past and that's what it is, the past. The bigger picture has changed a fair bit. They're in turmoil i.e. the warmongers.

No sanctions are coming, the only nation that is willing to deal with them in the region is Pakistan. Iran, Russia, China, Central Asian states have all given the middle finger.

Yes. Until and unless a rapprochement with Iran is reached again.

It is still too early to say what will be the new American policy toward Pakistan after a full withdrawal from Afghanistan. But you are right about Bolton: He is discredited not only in the Democrats circle but also the old-fashioned Conservatives don't like this war monger. Don't forget Bolton was kicked by even Trump. Just look at the Comments to this Bolton WaPo article: Bolton is mocked more than even the Taliban are mocked! Maybe the Indian Lobby in American slipped a fat-check to him to write something against Pakistan--now that India has freed up some $$ because of the recent events in Afghanistan: Reportedly, a large stack of Pakistani Rupees was found at Spin Boldak, meant to be for BLA, courtesy India. But I digress.

The Americans have known that Pakistani nukes are well-guarded and will be extremely hard to 'extract'. And also Pakistan has NO INTENTION to pass onto any 'Jihadi' blah blah. So stupid fear-mongering by Bolton!!

But let's also entertain an alternate theory. Very different from what Bolton is saying.

There is a theory out there that USA wants Pakistan to sort of manage Afghanistan through the Taliban in such a way that no international terrorists can take a foothold again. This would be a far cheaper and safer option for Americans who would now be able to concentrate on the Pacific theater. If this theory prevails then expect Pakistan to be given a lot of importance instead of being sanctioned. Perhaps the so-called Quad with Uzebekistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and USA is a harbinger of that.

It is too early to say what is in Uncle Sam's mind. But reading too much into a discredited guy like Bolton is premature. Tick tock...

USA wants Pakistan to sort of manage Afghanistan through the Taliban in such a way that no international terrorists can take a foothold again.

And Pakistan wants to be that manager precisely. The only question is the terms and resources of such an arrangement.

Biden won't do anything till Sept 1st that is till Afghan evacuations are ongoing.
But after that sanctions are coming.
isscooolacccionn mitrrrrunnn!!!!

waaahhh Modi g wahhh!!!

huur cheez may vijaaay!

A lesson for Pakistan coming with sanctions and blockages. Prepare Pakistanis Prepare!!!

We will be truly independent now.

.
US has lost all leverage on Pakistan. Much before Taliban took over.

Imran Khan has said openly that US consider India its strategic partner, the onus is on US to prove otherwise.

Sanctions or keeping Pakistan in grey list etc are not gonna change anything for Pakistan.

US doesn't care about India, US has its own concerns and Pakistan has reassured them.

The Americans also clearly understand the value of Pakistani nuclear weapons as a bedrock of stability in a volatile region, since the MAD doctrine holds well for Kashmir. As long as they remain secure, they are an asset for stability in the region.

Precisely: The terms and resources. But for Uncle Sam, it would be far less than the $30-50 billion per year being spent in Afghanistan lately.

Actually, the Pakistan-Managing-Afghanistan role would be also for China. And for Russia too.
