It is most likely a typo, since the DF-5 was deployed in 1981, so the DF-4 was definitely deployed before 1980.

China is ALREADY contained. It is sad really that despite its size, it cannot contain waters in her periphery. Besides having to contend with a resurgent and exceedingly powerful Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force, there is the North Korean Navy (impressive submarine assymetrical doctrine), the ROKN, the Taiwanese (who cooperate with the JMSDF actually, lol), then there is the American 7th Fleet.

This does not include the Vietnamese Navy, Philippine Navy, and of course the Australian Navy (now in a military defense partnership with Japan)

Now that Vietnam and the Philippines have established close partnership with Japan -- and the United States, as we build upon our defense platforms, we can further develop containment strategies.
