China is ALREADY contained. It is sad really that despite its size, it cannot contain waters in her periphery. Besides having to contend with a resurgent and exceedingly powerful Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force, there is the North Korean Navy (impressive submarine assymetrical doctrine), the ROKN, the Taiwanese (who cooperate with the JMSDF actually, lol), then there is the American 7th Fleet.

This does not include the Vietnamese Navy, Philippine Navy, and of course the Australian Navy (now in a military defense partnership with Japan)

Now that Vietnam and the Philippines have established close partnership with Japan -- and the United States, as we build upon our defense platforms, we can further develop containment strategies. And let us be frank and transparent. It is to contain no other than China. It is all part of the American Pivot -- and shall be taken advantage greatly upon by JAPAN. Philippines and Vietnam shall benefit greatly -- in military defense acquisition and strategic links.

The horizon bears much fruit and opportunity for us all.

Soviet had S-300 to intercept ICBM in 1979 while China ICBM that time was quite bad.

No amount of money will be incentive to lay down one's own independence. Taiwan is not Hong Kong or Macau. Taiwan is the size of Malaysia in terms of population, with a GDP that is greater than most ASEAN countries combined.
