it's very hard to fix the tainted image of Police forces, need a lot of money, hard work and goodwill to do that

in my country the image of police is very mix, from the really bad to really friendly and currently they had become the first choice to be asked for helps in community after Army and Fire Department, although their corrupt image is still prevalence but at least they do it less today than decade ago and trying to fix it from their earnest. Recruiting good looking persons is very helpful actually to repair their bad image in the past, as people tend to looking at a handsome and beautiful woman as a good sign of lucks and had their own charms to influence people around them, and Indonesia Police department had doing that for decade after reformation era.

And you know, even professionalism may came from the stick of brooms like this

and for Police, it was not a rifle their best arms. Their smile and a flower maybe become the greatest asset and weapons among all

@Nilgiri I don't know if the situation is the same in Canada as it is in the US,but I learned that in US police academies,they spend an incredibly high amount of time on self defense instead of dealing with conflicts managements.
An european police officer will try to desescalate a situation,while cops in the US just escalate it (using disproportionate force..) and sometimes it ends with deads on both sides.

Of course maybe,the mentalities between the police forces and populations aren't just the same everwhere.

USA has to deal with real bad asss criminals. Gun violence is a everyday thing in USA. Cops has to protect itself first. I seen them wearing bullet proof vest all the time.

It really depends.

For example here in India, it depends on what state police you talk about.

Maharashtra, Delhi, and border states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and J&K police are formidable in the country. These four states have the most advanced counter-terrorist units, coupled with modern surveillance mechanisms. My state's police has a low profile but is pretty efficient when compared to bigger states like UP's police.

Maybe in Pakistan, Bangladesh and other subcontinent countries the police is a single homogeneous entity.

Most American police units are shoved with excess military gear handed down which could not be used for war.

A militarized police is a dangerous situation for any country and US because of this is gradually becoming a police state.

Their gun laws are weird and cost a lot of lives every year. Being a large country with a vast population, they cannot be managed like Switzerland where the gun-related deaths are least in the world among armed countries.

On the contrary, I always had positive interaction with BD police. When My mobile was stolen, they tried to locate it for many days. But it was switched off they couldn't help. I lost interest but I never heard a No from them. When There was a fight in the neighborhood and a false report made by the accuser they only took few hours to reveal the truth.

By Best force I didn't mean not corrupted. When the country itself ranks top in corruption, Police force is also included in it. What I meant Bangladesh police can track criminals if the political willingness is there.

There are police mobs/mafias there given the size of the economy there.....in places you least expect. Friend of mine in Denver CO had a really bad experience with it....protection money/extortion/threats you name it....because the sheriff had a grudge against him for some reason.

The USA are a special case, man! Sheriffs, police chiefs, various levels of state attorneys and even judges ...
are often elected.
As you can guess, it makes favours and preferences almost the norm in how these people then
conduct their business with an eye on reelection.

In a more general comment, no policeman should ever strike a citizen as shown in images above
unless they are already under arrest and resisting.

Can you name any other police force in the region or infact anywhere that has been as successful ? The Special Task force arm of the Sri Lankan Police were one of the most lethal and most successful counter terrorism forces in the world..

Just because Lankans dont make a huge hue and cry or make repeated dick measuring contests mean they are insignificant, There are many things that they pretty much outdo their South Asian counterparts in many spheres , Those just wont make headlines because they dont make much noise
