UN never helped the Sri Lankan military or the government in it's war against Tamil terrorism, On the contrary it was a impediment and still is, The head of UNHRC at the height of the war was herself a Tamil Tiger sympathizer Navi Pillai, The UN went to extraordinary lengths to save the Tigers from destruction.. They passed dozens of resolutions against the Sri Lankan military and the government, Lobbied by LTTE proxies within the UN system

You need to be more aware of the subject matter to make such comments..

The ignorance in this thread seem culpable, The Sri Lankan forces both military and Police Para military and intelligence were the only force since the early 20th century to defeat a insurgency through force, And that at one time the LTTE was considered the richest and most brutal terrorist organization in the world

Can you name any other police force in the region or infact anywhere that has been as successful ? The Special Task force arm of the Sri Lankan Police were one of the most lethal and most successful counter terrorism forces in the world..

Just because Lankans dont make a huge hue and cry or make repeated dick measuring contests mean they are insignificant, There are many things that they pretty much outdo their South Asian counterparts in many spheres , Those just wont make headlines because they dont make much noise
Problem is... That's what hey preach on news and schools nowadays... Just like how only 160k max died in bangladeshi war and how only 10k people died in Syria till now under independent researchers on such fields...

I am a law abiding educated citizen of India who pay his taxes on time and in full.

But still police make me scared a lot, so they are definitely not the best.

Not schools... Historians! Check out independent modern researchers who say that in CNN and BBC :/

They are normally quoting Sarmila Bose who has done probably the largest most well known study of it.

Her figures can be questioned though...BD should get one of their best to come up with a strong rebuttal but it will require a thorough analysis and being prepared to let go of the 3 million claim (and take a leaf out of how holocaust historians have done this and come to a general accepted consensus).

But so far I think BD is scared of what it will truly find (i.e that it is probably a magnitude lower) so its best to keep the pain in peoples hearts as much as possible with the 3 million figure for political purposes etc.

Probably not 3 million but not in 100k marks either... Deaths are in millions though imo. Many people still unaccounted for... Many villages with no people in them... So yeah.

Well BD has to do a professional analysis of it...what is BD's best paper on the matter anyway?

@Joe Shearer @Anubis @Loki do you know?

A very painful subject and would rather not go into it directly.
  1. This particular branch of the Bose family is contrarian. The eldest is a chronicler of State excesses against Naxalites, and has also written a well-regarded book on Kashmir, which is frequently quoted by Arundhati Roy. The second was Sarmila, who has always backed out of any direct discussion on her book and its conclusions. The third is the famous Sugato, married to Manto's niece, Ayesha Jalal, who herself took Chitralekha Zutshi and Mridu Rai through their PhDs (Zutshi keeps claiming that Rai saw her manuscript thanks to Jalal, and wrote her PhD based on that). Their mother Krishna Bose was a friend of my parents. Very eccentric; Sugato's own book on the Indian Ocean has been panned by critics, but he continues to have Didi's ear and runs Presidency like a fiefdom.
  2. I would not like to speculate on the figures, but it is probably closer to or even slightly less than 300,000. The 3 million figure is a little unsettling. The bulk of the killing was done by the Razakars, as people have always suspected, the Pakistan Army was involved in ugly incidents but sinned more by giving sanction to these killings, specifically, while Tikka Khan was there in command.

.
Bangladesh War Documents....3.5 lakh pages of data...No Mrs Bose definitely didn't do the "largest" study of it.

Holocaust deniers(or those who question it) always try to idiotically drum up how it was impossible to kill that many people..not enough gas chambers..not enough crematoriums..not enough ss soldiers...what they do not realize is genocide is much broader than just shooting some and killing them....the fact that Anne Frank died of typhus on Bergen Belsen is also a victim of genocide is probably not realized by many.....A lot of Jews did die in the holocaust...they weren't directly killed by the Nazis...so 3 million or close to 3 million is neither impossible nor improbable considering how many rajakars, biharis and soldiers the Pakistanis had.

Fun fact: if USA wouldn't have denied her entry to US. She would have survived the war. The same declination many refugees are facing from Syria... We humans never learn you know. Get ready to read biography of another Anne frank once the war is over

That happened to many people around that time. US did not want a sudden influx of refugees from Europe....and they also underestimated what WW2 would be like for people. Hindsight is 20/20.

On other end of spectrum you have people like Chiune Sugihara. Have you ever come across him?

This area of debate is direct No No for Bangladeshis. It was settled in the court that 3 M died and Sheikh Mujib declared independence. So as law abiding citizens we are prohibited to have a second opinion. I ask all the Bangladeshis to maintain this.

The law is an analogy of holocaust related laws

However the 3M first appeared in Russian State Media and Sheikh Mujib quoted it later
