Rome: The Italian government "will see" if one of the two marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen in 2012 is fit enough to return to India, Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni has said.


The Foreign Minister said he "hopes" for results in the case of the two Italian marines Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone.

The remarks come after the Indian Supreme Court rejected a request from one of the marines, Girone, to return to Italy for the Christmas holidays and a petition from Latorre, to extend his stay in Italy for health reasons.

Latorre had flown to Italy after suffering a stroke-like attack earlier this year.

Gentiloni, in a radio interview yesterday, said that "we will see" if Latorre is well enough to return to India as scheduled in mid-January.

The marine's health is an "absolute priority," he was quoted as saying by the Italian ANSA news agency.

The two Italian marines, accused of killing two fishermen in Kerala in 2012, maintain that they fired at them after mistaking them for pirates while guarding an Italian oil tanker.

The marines had been living in the Italian embassy in New Delhi since then waiting to be tried, and were not supposed to leave the country.

The situation has led to tense relations between India and Italy, which says that India has no jurisdiction in the case.

Gentiloni had earlier said, "The harvest (from the dialogue with India) has been very disappointing. If the agreement is what we saw the other day, then we're not going very far. I hope that different roads can be found in the next few days."

This issue is just mishandled, get some large sum of money from the Italian government, give it to the victim's families, and let the Marines go. That is what will do everyone good. The victims were poor, their families will get a new lease of life with the money, the Marines were trying to protect the ship, though they misunderstood the situation. The Diplomatic ties will suffer a huge blow, and Indian judiciary will be made a laughing stock for stretching the issue this far.

Here its about the trail in India as the Italian marine wants to stay back for two or more months, In September 2014 Indian court agreed to let one to travel to Italy for four months. He is scheduled to return on January 16, 2015.

We had to be more sensible with this issue. It is an issue involving two different nations, and has got men in uniform involved in it. Even we would've done what Italy has done. Our judiciary is awfully slow,and we can't have'em suffer for it.
If we have do something, we have to do it fast.

And I believe you have used the term "soft power" out of context bro. Being a soft power doesn't mean anyone can mess with us, being a soft power means you can coerce others into your way, through cultural,economical,political ties etc. Its powerful than being a hard power IMO.

This entire case has become toxic. Face reality. Latorre will never come back. And the other one will come home too.

This should have been solved months ago behind closed doors.

we should downgrade our relation with italy. Even if it hurts our interest. This is just racism in another name, valuing european life over Indian. What would have happened if an Indian sailer killed italian? I am sure they would have jailed him.
