Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has said that the previous administration was looking to purchase aircraft from Pakistan “through a bank loan”.

Shahid said this in an interview published by India’s ‘Times Now’ on Sunday, where he reiterated that the helicopters gifted by India will remain in the Maldives.

“The helicopters are being used for humanitarian purposes. A total of 164 medical evacuees have been conducted by these helicopters in the last few years. We are also using them for search and rescue, which is an essential feature for an island nation like ours,” said the minister.

Further noting that the former administration was planning to purchase aircrafts from Pakistan through a bank loan, Minister Shahid emphasized that the current government has no such interest.

Amid reports of deteriorating bilateral relations between both nations, Maldives had in June asked India to take back the two helicopters it had gifted.

Due to the status of bilateral ties, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had rejected Maldives’ invitations for a state visit throughout former President Abdulla Yameen’s term. His first visit to the country, since assuming office in 2014, was to attend incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s swearing-in ceremony on November 17.

While President Solih and PM Modi had met prior to his departure, Minister Shahid- who was present at the meeting- said that he had “sensed a new era dawning”.

“The manner in which discussions were held, with sincerity and warmth. I’m sure that we have launched ourselves into a new era of Maldives, India relationship,” he added.

President Solih’s first state visit will be to India, on December 17.

. . . . . . .
Super Mashak is small small the bigger deal is between Maldives and wapda Pakistan which India cannot stop. :)
We only oppose military deals we do not care about small commercial MOUs.

Yeah, they have also rejected after Nigeria and Burma..
Nigeria is 7000 km away from India so not our concern.

We like Burma as it recently signed a deal for six trainer jets from India which will be hosted along with a team of IAF pilots and engineers at the same airbase as Burmese FC-1s.;);)

No because Myanmar has a 60 year long defence relationship with China.
So they receiving a few FC-1s from China doea not change anything.

But Maldives is a different story.

.
Maldives will accept Indian dornier instead
lol . they should go and wail to China .
Rremember this?
Now dont get your expectations too high and calm down.

Maldives Snubs India Again, Inks Power Sector Deal With Pakistan

The move is seen as another snub to India after it recently scrapped a helicopter deal with New Delhi.
Pakistan and the Maldives have signed a Memorandum of Understanding or MoU to support the island nation's infrastructure development in the power sector. The move is seen as another snub to India after it recently scrapped a helicopter deal with New Delhi.

I really dont understand why Pakistanis are jumping so much even though power games are being played by India and China and recently china is on a losing streak in island nations in IOR. And yet here we have Pak members all happy like they have won some kind of war in maldives.
Its just 1 commercial contract, and honestly in present scenario if India says so maldives would cancel the project with pak and give it to some India company but we wont do that coz we dont operate like China.
And forget about any military deal with them, they aint paying a dollar for any arms and equipment, their priority is to pay back loans and balance it with infra needs for which India is providing financial aid.
