Maharashtra police to crack whip on those who ‘like’ offensive Facebook posts - The Times of India
---------------------------------------
This seems a national policy although this case is one state or is it just one state? else- what is the deal with this? why is freedom of expression and speech being attacked?

so somebody is stupid, and has a stupid opinion. Unless they are shouting fire in a theater AKA inciting true national riots or fear ... why should you go after the poster , let alone someone who " likes" the post on Facebook.

This is undemocratic ...

Haha good job, there is a need to moderate things, too much nonsense being said in the name of freedom of expression vis a vis hindus and hinduism.:D

Attacked ??? How ??? Those people will be brought to court of law. Is that a attack ???

Freedom of speech is limited by the clause that such freedom should not disturb the social fabric or hurt other's feelings or beliefs.

The controversial post almost brought down all the cities in Maharashtra to close down. If you want to understand the magnitude you can compare it with "the cartoon controversy "

I say the offenders better go to police and surrender. That would be safe for their lives.

How is it undemocratic ??? Please explain it to me.

Freedom of expression means just that!
People are stupid, they say and do stupid things. Unless by their statements alone, anyone is in harm's way, there is absolutely no need to interfere with anyone's point of view! Egos and sentiments be damned! What if someday, your point of view offends someone and they pull YOU up for making, what they term as "offensive", statement? Everyone has a right to say what they please, whether you/we like it or not!

All you indians follow the preset mood now-
Your freedom of speech is taken hostage by Modi lead government-
Your difference of opinion can put you in Jail- or you will be tried for sedition-
You guys should adopt communism now-

Enjoy-

Disagree. This one is a slippery slope. Once you start infringing on some rights, there's no telling where it will stop! What was once considered to be a joke will turn and become offensive to someone, and people will get punished for that silly reason!

There is a reason why the 2nd amendment of US constitution is so passionately defended, even though, letting lay people keep arms is against any logic or commonsense! Who is to say that once that right is taken away, authorities will not start looking at your other rights?

It would do good to remember and ponder over Noemoller's short poem
"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

Let us NOT let anyone infringe on our rights, in their entirety, as enshrined in our Constitution!

Another example, if you would indulge me, is the story of Emperor Palpitine in Star Wars! A mere senator from Naboo, becomes so powerful to become the Chancellor and by taking away rights of the citizens of the Republic, one by one, by giving various reasons, becomes the all powerful Sith Emperor!

Unless your opinion can start a riot !!!!
Or you are in favour of the riots also as its also their freedom ??? I hope not

I suggest you try to test your freedom of speech by saying something about prophet of other religion in US. Lets see how it go.

Do you know what was the post ???

Yes they can take me to court. N I will go cause I am responsible for what I say.

PS : nobody can be ok in Maharashtra after insulting the state idol. I pray they are found by police than common public of any party. Result will be same

Like I said, people are stupid. People will get offended over small things. If we, citizens, defend the right to freedom of expression, in its entirety, people will understand that anyone can say anything and it is their right, just as they themselves have the right to express their opinions!
Thakeray made so many inflammatory speeches, almost inciting social unrest! Did anyone punish him? Why? He always defended himself by citing this Freedom of Expression rights! So why punish the lay people, who are much more stupid and irresponsible than a politician with mass following?

Actually you can! Just watch Fox programs and you will know! Does Family Guy jokes ring any bells?

are you saying rioting over a cartoon is right?

freedom of speech is designed to challenge the status quo unless it is akin to screaming fire in theater.

people have negative opinions about historical figures. for example: if I call Modi or rahul Gandhi a nazi ...as offensive as it is --- it is not grounds for stifling free speech.

I guess we who live in true democracies ( albeit not perfect ones), find the need to protect individual freedoms, even of those folks who are stupid- very near and dear to our freedoms
