SME News, Tuesday, Oct 11, 13:13:08 PM IST

MUMBAI: The state-run power utility company Mahavitaran will be imposing 16 hours of staggering day for the industries from tomorrow due to the power supply shortage in Maharashtra. The state is facing power shortage due to the unrest in Andhra Pradesh in regard to the Telangana issue.

Mahavitaran has stated that the load shedding will be imposed only once a week from tomorrow onwards. Maharashtra has been witnessing shortfall of 3,500-MW power.

Moreover, the power plants in Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have not been able to generate electricity due to coal shortage.

Furthermore, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd is hoping that the present Telangana crisis will get solved soon and the normal power supply will be restored in the state.

In the past, Mahavitaran had stated that it has been getting 1,500 MW less power from the Central sector and 1,000 MW less from Mahagenco power station. Mahagenco has stated that it is supposed to receive 24 rakes of coal daily, but are presently receiving just 10-12 rakes in the last three weeks. The coal shortage has also lead to the power generation to slip by 500-600 MW.

Presently, the demand is 16,500 MW, and the availability is 11,000 MW.

Load-shedding: Don’t cut us off: Bangalore's industries to govt
Published: Tuesday, Oct 11, 2011, 13:31 IST
By Hemanth Kumar | Place: Bangalore | Agency: DNA

As the state government announced the schedule for load-shedding across the state sparing Bangalore city, the industrial sector fears the worst.

Energy minister Shobha Karandlaje has already dropped hints of introducing staggered weekly-offs for industries to minimise the effect of power crunch that has hit the state.

Realising the inevitable, the industrialists are ready to co-operate but conditions apply.

“We are always ready to co-operate with the government whenever the state is facing a problem. We have done it in the past and are ready for it even now to accept introduction of staggered weekly-off system. But that is just one part of the problem at hand,” said Prakash N Raikar, president of Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association.

“But the state government should assure the industrial sector that it would ensure steady supply of power for at least eight hours during the day on all the six remaining days of the week to ensure that industrial production is not affected,” said Raikar.

JR Bangera, president of Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FKCCI), stated that the industrial bodies have a wishlist that they will presentto the energy minister on Tuesday before they agree tothe proposal of staggered weekly-off system.

“We can understand the problem being faced by the state. The system is a common feature in industrial areas of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and a few more states. But that is to ensure that they get steady uninterrupted power a certain number of hours,” he said.

“We too will present a similar demand before the government before agreeing for staggered weekly-offs. It will be a big blow for industries if the state government fails to provide steady power on the remaining six days of the week,” said Bangera, expressing fears of a double blow.

Bangera wants the state government to give sales tax subsidy on diesel being purchased by the industrial sector for running their captive generator sets.

“Such a gesture will reduce the dependence of industries on power from state grid and put their captive generation capacity to optimum use without escalating the production cost of the products,” he said.

16-hour power cut for industries in Maharashtra from today
Published: Wednesday, Oct 12, 2011, 8:00 IST
Place: Mumbai | Agency: Agencies

Two days after it imposed planned load-shedding across the state, the Maharashtra State Electricity Board on Tuesday announced 16-hour power cuts for industries starting Wednesday.

The load-shedding for industries will be imposed once a week — on different days in different areas — coinciding with days when plants observe their weekly off, said an official from the Maharashtra State Electricity Board.

The latest power-saving measure has been taken in view of an estimated shortage of around 3,500MW to 4,000MW of power in the past three weeks. Power generation in the state has been hit badly on account of severe disruptions in coal supply due to the Telangana agitation in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and floods in Orissa. This has resulted in Maharashtra power stations getting only around 12 rakes (trainloads) of coal against the daily requirements of 24 rakes.

The present demand is around 16,500MW but power generation is 11,000MW, necessitating load-shedding of three to seven hours in urban areas and 11-13 hours in rural areas, hitting domestic, commercial and agriculture sectors.

The power cuts have angered people, with protests in at least two areas of Thane in the past two days and in Yavatmal on Wednesday. Coal supply has hit the MAHAGENCO thermal power generation plants in Parli (Beed), Chandrapur, Koradi, Khaparkheda, Paras — all in eastern Maharashtra, Nashik and Bhusawal in the northern parts of the state and Uran in Thane, besides smaller ones across the state.

This is the first time this year that ‘planned load-shedding’ has been imposed in the state which has been showing an improvement in its power supply position in the past couple of years, mainly owing to good monsoons.

City gets a reprieve from loadshedding

MSEDCL, power shortage Posted: Sat Oct 08 2011, 03:11 hrs Pune:

Loadshedding has been temporarily lifted in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad and there are likelihood of no outages from Saturday. The city did not face any outage on Friday and an official statement issued here said that there will be no loadshedding from Saturday, unless there is acute shortage of power.

Nine divisions of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad included in the A-1 category of cities would face no loadshedding. However, if there is an acute power shortage, the utility will have to resort to load shedding, the release said while announcing the new schedule.

According to officials of the MSEDCL, the decision to end loadshedding was taken in the case of the six revenue divisions that had implemented the zero loadshedding model and had been placed in A-1 category.

On Friday, the power utility had not enforced loadshedding in the morning and evening hours in the city. However, the utility officials pointed out that at present, availability of power in the state is 12,000 MW. It is still falling short of requirements and hence loadshedding will be increased in urban areas of other groups of cities from three to seven hours and in rural areas from the earlier 8-11 hours to 11-13 hours.

For the past week now, Puneites have been facing unscheduled loadshedding due to shortage of power across the state. The Telangana agitation and Orissa floods had hurt coal transportation and supply to thermal power plants. Besides, technical faults at various power plants in some other states had also led to power dipping in the national grid as well.

There is 4 hours load shedding in Hyderabad. 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening. My relatives in Hyderabad have told me about it. First hand authentic information hai.:D

I've been to Coimbatore,TN..They have 2 hours of Power cut in the middle of the day- from 12-2PM or So. it is a major industrial city down south especially textiles, machineries etc.

We are indeed facing Power scarcity, but that is not to the level exaggerated. if You compare rural power distribution system, agrees power cuts in some rural areas are nothing much to tell.

Coal shortage leads to power outages across India

New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) A severe shortage of coal has hit electricity output in the country and led to long and frequent power outages in many states, including the national capital, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Most of the plants of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), the country’s largest power producer, have been generating significantly less power than their installed capacity for the last couple of weeks due to the shortage of coal supply, an official said Wednesday.

Heavy rains in coal producing areas and a two-day strike by workers of Coal India compounded the problems of many power plants across the country, he said.

Talking to reporters here, Power Secretary P. Uma Shankar said said the government would sell coal to power companies through e-auctions to address their concerns.

‘The coal secretary has told us that the coal ministry will be able to spare some of the coal that would be sold through e-auctions, provided the developer picks up the coal from the pithead,’ Shankar said.

Coal India, the largest coal miner in the country, sells about 10 percent of its total output through the e-auction route. It is, however, not clear how much coal will be diverted to power producers.

The national capital Delhi has been facing frequent power cuts for over a week.

‘It is causing a lot of troubles. There has been frequent power cut. At least for 4-5 hours, we have to live without power,’ said D.V. Soni, a resident of east Delhi.

People across the country have been hit by the frequent power outages.

An official team from Karnataka, headed by Energy Minister Shobha Karandlaje, arrived in New Delhi Wednesday to plead with the central government for more power as severe shortfalls have forced long hours of outages and staggered holidays for industries in the state.

All small, medium and large-scale industries in Karnataka, which generally observe Sunday as the weekly holiday, will go for staggered weekly holidays from Thursday in the face of the state reeling under 1,000 MW power shortage daily.

‘The details will be worked between industry associations and Escoms (electricity supply companies) and the schedule will come into effect from Thursday,’ Karandlaje said in Bangalore before heading for New Delhi.

Other states like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have been facing a similar problem and have requested the central government to take appropriate action to increase coal supply.

A group of ministers, headed by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has made concrete suggestions to fast track clearances for allocation of coal blocks to the private sector and simultaneous forest and environment clearances to expedite the availability of coal to the power sector.

The centre Wednesday agreed to give 700 MW extra power to Maharashtra, an official said here late in the evening.

Maharashtra has been facing heavy load-shedding ranging from 3-7 hours in urban centres and 11-13 hours in urban areas.

The group has also accepted the power ministry’s suggestions to allow utilities to undertake tariff revision periodically, rather than as a one-off exercise, Power Secretary Uma Shankar said at an event organised by FICCI here.

FICCI president Harsh Mariwala said according to the industry lobby estimate, up to 25,000 MW of thermal power capacity was at present stranded in the country. ‘This implies a locking up of Rs.100,000 crore in stalled power projects,’ he said.

Mariwala said the immediate concern was availability of adequate fuel, especially supply of coal to power plants.

‘In spite of the vast coal reserves in India, domestic coal availability remains uncertain. This coupled with volatile international prices of coal is set to derail capacity addition plans of projects developers,’ he said.

Load shedding inevitable if power shortage persists:Karnataka CM
Bangalore | Sunday, Oct 9 2011 IST

Karnataka Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda today said the state may face continued power shortage and load shedding may become inevitable under extreme circumstances due to different reasons. Speaking to reporters at his residence here, he said the BJP government was doing everything to ensure sufficient power supply to all sections of the people, including the industries. But under extreme circumstances, there will be no other go but to effect load shedding. We are living under the burden of inaction committed during the previous Congress governments in the state as this party did little to increase the power production in tune with the demand. Currently, we are also facing shortage due to Telangana stir. Please do not entirely blame us (BJP government) for the current situation, he said. MORE UNI RS AKM PA RAI1832

Goa to be hit by a Power Crisis
Saturday, 17 September 2011 09:37

The power crisis looms large over Goa with Ramagundam Power station in Andhra Pradesh heading for a possible closure due to Telangana stir, expressed state Power Minister Aleixo Sequeira.

Sequeira told reporters that the state is already in crisis after Corba Power Plant cut down its supply to the state by almost 150 to 160 MW from state’s allocated capacity of 210 MW due to incessant rains in Maharashtra. Goa has 400 MW power allocation from Central grid of which majority is pulled from Corba power station.

"We pulled resources through NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited which gives us 63MW supply and through barter deal with Power exchange, we are procuring 50MW electricity," the minister said.

Even as Goa managed to tide over the shortage since last seven days, a fresh trouble is brewing for the coastal state in the form of Telangana agitation.

Sequeira said that the supply from Ramagundam Station in Telangana is likely to be stopped from tomorrow as the plant is running short of Coal. "If that happens, then we will be plunged into power crisis," he said adding industries consume less power on Saturday and Sunday but there can be an issue after Monday.

Goa has been witnessing frequent load shedding these days, the minister admitted stating that the incessant rains have caused disturbance in the distribution lines. He said the transformers at two sub stations Tivim and Verna have failed thus aggravating the crisis.

Load shedding to hit State today

Bangalore,Oct 9, DHNS:

Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Sunday said load shedding had become inevitable in the State and the schedule for the same, including the timing and duration, will be announced on Monday.

Speaking to reporters in Bangalore, Gowda said the State government had no option but to resort to load shedding following the disruption in coal supply due to the Telangana agitation. On an average, the total power demand in the State is 160 million units per day.
On Saturday, the total power supply stood at 136 million units.

According to the sources in the energy department, urban areas are likely to witness two to three hours of load shedding, while rural areas will be further hit with six hours of power cut. Two-hour load shedding is likely to be imposed in Bangalore City, the sources added.

Letter to Centre

Thermal power plants at Raichur and Bellary depend on coal supply from other states.
The State government on Friday had written to the Centre to ensure adequate coal supply to its thermal power plant at Raichur and allot 500 MW from the unallocated share of Central Generating Stations to overcome the power crisis.

Gowda said a delegation from the State will meet the Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal in New Delhi on October 14 and urge him to direct Coal India to supply 10,000 tons of coal daily additionally from Western Coalfields (WCL) and Mahanandi Coalfields to Karnataka Power Corporation to run eight units of thermal power at Raichur Plant.

Due to Telangana stir, coal supply to Raichur Thermal units from Singareni Collieries has completely stopped.

At present power is generated by only five units and sometimes four units and the situation can be improved only with additional coal being made available, Gowda said.

BJP State President K S Eshwarappa said Union Ministers from Karnataka, S M Krishna, M Mallikarjuna Kharge and others, should exert pressure on the Centre to allocate additional coal stocks as well us allot more power from central stations.

Haha. Look whose saying?

:D

What the matter Imran Bhai ? The whole thread is about loadshedding and the funny part is I haven't yet experienced it here in Mangalore, Karnataka. The only time power was off last night that too for half an hour :)

if this continues, India is certainly having problem in achieving this years targeting growth rate.

Its a temporary issue, people. The thing is, there's a power shortage since excess has been consumed by UP for elections this time, against the agreement between the two provinces. Usually there's little power cuts in Delhi. The issue is likely to be solved by the week's end.

Trust me, it isn't that crazy as what you're thinking on permanent basis.
