PESHAWAR: President of Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter, Asad Qaiser has been nominated for the post of speaker in the provincial assembly by party chief Imran Khan on Saturday night.

The decision was taken in a party meeting held at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital in Lahore, where Khan is currently being treated for injuries he sustained during electioneering.

PTI’s chief minister-elect Pervez Khattak and leaders Shah Farman and Atif Khan were also present on the occasion.

The PTI chairman had earlier nominated Khattak for the chief minister’s position ending an internal power struggle between Khattak and Asad Qaisar, who also was aspiring for the top post.

Khan’s party has won the largest number of seats in the province in the recently held general elections.

PESHAWAR - Central General Secretary and parliamentary leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), Pervez Khan Khattak, was on Thursday elected the 16th chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).

"Khattak has secured 84 votes while Maulana Lutfur Rehman of the JUI-F bagged 37 votes. Thus, Pervez Khan Khattak has secured majority votes of the members of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly and is elected as the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa," Asad Qaiser, KP Assembly speaker, announced the election results for the office of chief minister held at KP Assembly hall.

Khattak was supported by MPAs of Qumi Watan Party, Jamaat-e-Islami, Pakistan People's Party, All Pakistan Muslim League and Awami Jamhoori Itehad.

The voting was held under division method.

PML-N candidate Wajiuzman withdrew his candidature ahead of the election for CM’s office.

PML-N Parliamentary Leader Sardar Mehtab Khan congratulated Khattak and said the smooth transition of power from one civilian elected government to another was a historic day in the country's history.

Meanwhile, Khattak said if the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had formed government in the Centre, the US would have not dared to conduct drone strikes.

“If we had formed the federal government, Americans would not have dared to conduct drone attacks,” Khattak said on the floor of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.

Stressing on completely eradicating corruption from KP, the chief minister said the assembly would have a zero-tolerance towards the issue.

The chief minister said his party alone could not solve the issue of terrorism and called on PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif to devise a clear policy on drone attacks and terrorism. “We will support the federal government if there is a clear policy.”

Khattak also spoke of the problems in the province, stating that his party had come with solutions. - See more at: Khattak elected 16th KP chief minister | Pakistan Today | Latest news | Breaking news | Pakistan News | World news | Business | Sport and Multimedia
