DHAKA: BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has been convicted for five years in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

The special court, set up in Dhaka’s Bakshibazar area, delivered the verdict on Thursday (February 08).

Earlier, Judge of Dhaka Special Court-5 Md Akhtaruzzaman began to deliver the verdict at about 2:10 pm after Khaleda Zia reached the court at around 1:45pm.

Thousands of BNP leaders and activists flocked to the street, to accompany the motorcade of Khaleda Zia. As the motorcade reached Tejgaon Satrasta area, the crowd turns huge.

Clash between police and the BNP activists in several phases were reported as Khaleda Zia’s motorcade crosses Hatirjheel crossing.

Some of the leaders and activists were chanting slogans, supporting their party chief.

Police opened fire in air as the BNP activists were vandalizing and torching motorcycles at Kakrail. BNP leaders Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain were seen heading towards the court on foot.

Earlier, Khaleda Zia left her Gulshan residence at around 11:45am, to appear before the court.

On January 25, the special court fixed February 08 for delivering the verdict.

In July 2008, the ACC filed the case accusing Khaleda, her son BNP's senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman and four others for misappropriating over Tk 2.10 crore grant money for orphans.

The four other accused are--then BNP lawmaker Kazi Salimul Haque, Ziaur Rahman's nephew Mominur Rahman, former principal secretary Kamal Uddin Siddique and businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed.

Of them, Khaleda is now on bail while Salimul and Sharfuddin are in jail. Tarique and Mominur and Kamal have been absconding.

This is first time that any former prime minister of Bangladesh is getting verdict in a corruption case.

She is paying the price for not standing up to the AL regime.

.
All money still exist in the account. Amount rise to 7 core from 2 core then how can we tell she embezzle the money . Land purcpurch in orphanage name land purchased in orphanage name nothing seems unusual.
This verdict is a way t o disqualify Khaleda from next election .

Or paying the price of their ( she and her son ) endless robbery and trying to make bangladesh as a failed state ?

.
I think, the case will be transferred to the High Court, then to Supreme Court and then to Appeal Division for the final verdict. It is sad to think that she mishandled fund for the Orphanage Trust. Orphans are the most destitute people in any country.

.
The main problem happened when in 2007 the entire money was withdrawn by Sharfuddin Ahmed. Other then that the case would not be surfaced to begin with. During 2014 when was asked why he withdrawn the money he answered Tareq Zia asked to purchase land in Ashulia but could not show any initial agreement to purchase the land and also failed to answer for a orphanage house to be built in Bogura why he tried to purchase land in Ashulia. However he returned the money as instructed by the court that time.

Until now what i have heard from seniors, this is not going to work out.
This verdict was never about khaleda zia,it was always about Tareq zia. It's him who govt fear most, specially when election is coming.

The Bangladesh High Commission in the United Kingdom has handed over the video footage showing BNP activists vandalising its offices, to London police, Foreign Affairs Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali has said.

The UK unit of the BNP attacked the offices on Wednesday ahead of the Khaleda Zia’s corruption trial verdict.

Some 100 party supporters carrying banners and placards gathered at the high commission premises.

The Britain chapter’s President MA Malique has admitted some protesters entered the high commission and vandalised the photos of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Police arrested one person on the spot, Minister Ali said at a press briefing on Thursday. He briefed the media on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official tours to Italy and Vatican City due to start on Feb 12.

The minister read out a statement condemning the attack.

“A group of protesters, in the name of submitting a memorandum, forced into the high commission and attacked the mission officials and vandalised its property,” says the statement issued by the Bangladesh High Commission in UK.

“Bangladesh High Commission, London, represents Bangladesh. So vandalising mission’s property means damaging the state property and attacking the mission means attacking Bangladesh.”

Such violent and unruly acts have tainted Bangladesh’s image abroad, it said.

The commission claims that the protesters are spreading fake photos on social media to mislead people, Ali said.

The Denmark chapter of the Awami League also has condemned the attack.

Who is not a thief in our country??
Yes I know but perhaps there are some differences.
However peoples will reply based on their personal experience and needs.
I consider electricity as a basic need alongside food and shelter. And my answer was based on electricity problem .
This disaster always prohibited me from even thinking of a democratic election .
And few others but that can be debated .
But in summer almost 16-18 hours of loadsheding ( 2 hour loadsheding and 1 hour electricity in cruel summer even all day and night ) madetraumatic ( in 2005-06).
That's the thing I just can't forget and don't want to forget . Perhaps this is the reason I can't be stoic in this case. It was a real hell and I won't be freed crorm those memories I believe .
If BNP will lead by others ( except Zia family; thought I admire Zia as a good man and good administrator bit his wife and son is gotat opposite to him .) , I will try to be rational , otherwise not . Thank you.

.
She lead Bangladesh to no.1 in corruption 5 years in a row...now, she gets 5 years in jail

Some would say it was almost poetic lolol

*she'll get bail within a couple of days and will end up never serving any time for this.
