Kerala Govt plans to Ban liquor

. .
Difference is Gujjus are more or less non drinkers where as Keralites are not. I remember similar liquor ban was enforced in Haryana by Bansi Lal but his own son started smuggling liquor in the state . Also, people used to travel to nearby Delhi/Punjab/UP borders to get as much liquor as they wanted. There was never any shortage of liquor in the state even though it was banned there.

It is easy availability of alcohol that has encouraged keralites to drink more than Guju's. Toddy was always popular even in ancient times, only they were generally consumed by the lower strata of society. The aspirational people of kerala society never used to drink in earlier times. Which is why even today most of the liquor shops are owned by xtians.

No meat, leather footwear or alcohol were ever allowed inside a kalari, which was the ancient martial arts school. Not to mention banning of meat or alcohol inside a school or temple.

This changed during British times when they abolished all traditional schools that imparted value systems like gurukuls and Kalari. Imitating the alcohol consuming habits of the british became the new "cool" thing to do. Things just spiraled out of control from there.

With the replacement of christian british as the new role model beef eating, smoking, adultery and alcoholism became signs of "modernity". Today the value systems that sustained the society are almost non existent.

Smuggling, rape, theft, gambling etc. will always be present in any society, but that does not mean we start issuing them legal status. Let it go underground like the rest of crimes in India.

The key is to remove social respectability from all these vices. That is the only way the value systems can every be reinstated in kerala.

There wont be any blanket ban of liquor ,Bevco will get monopoly and direct benefit to the state .....if govt closes 10% of bevco outlets every year it will take two or three decades for complete alcohol ban .....

What ever be his case but no one can deny that some of the best minds that India produced in the modern times were Tamils. C.V Raman & Ramanujam are few classical examples of Tamil brilliance!! People would have declared them extremists today because both were devout Hindus!!

That is a bit lop sided. There are great minds who come in all societies. Since Bengal and TN were under British rule for a long time, people there got the advantage of english education and corresponding Global media coverage. Tagore, JD Bose etc comes to mind.

Let us not mistaken recognition by Anglo media as the ultimate truth. That is jaded.

Once a fool.......always a fool. Shoo.

@abjktu dont fall in that trap mate.....

Prohibition does not work any where.

It just drives the business underground and creates a black market.

An unregulated black market creates bad products that kill people and the governments lose tax base.

It is not prohibition.... They are just closing down Bars.... Liquor will be available in retail shop which is run indirectly by Govt. They are going to reduce the retail shops by 10% every year......It will take atleast 3 decades to completely close down the retail shops. By then we will have at
least 6 different governments ruling the sate......

This is not gonna sit well with the Christian community, a lot of people that I know from Kerala drink. So not sure how this going to play with them.

one of fore front supporter of this campaign in catholic christian community in kerala

The decision is clearly more political than ideological. Although there has been pressure from several quarters, including from the Church for total prohibition,

.
I don't think folks outside Kerala realize how bad the liquor problem is , Its a positive and bold step.

.
Anything different in your Gujarat??
illicit liquor sale is on rise there...
Liquor ban in Gujarat has caused some people to switch to adulterated liquor (spirit). The best whisky you get there is a smuggled bottle of RS from Daman :omghaha: for 3-4 times the original market price. It is a sad state in that aspect, amazing to find people who approve of such a ban, which actually achieves nothing.

.
Everyone accuses Kerala and Keralites as the people who has the highest per capita alcohol consumption..... And their accusation is 100% true.

When a section of society (KCBC, Sasthra sahithya parishath, to name few) fight to remove this menace, suddenly this becomes religious, and political........ :hitwall::hitwall:
