Visitors to Japan hit record 15.9 mil. in Jan.-June period

Jiji PressTOKYO (Jiji Press) — The estimated number of visitors to Japan in January-June rose 15.6 percent year on year to 15,898,900, hitting a record high for the sixth consecutive year, the Japan National Tourism Organization said Wednesday.
The year-to-date total surpassed 15 million at a record pace, one month earlier than last year, as visitors from other East Asian countries increased due to expanded budget-airline services.
Prospects appear good that the annual total will reach an unprecedented level of 30 million this year. But there are concerns that natural disasters, including torrential rains in western Japan earlier this month, could act as a damper.
In June alone, the number of visitors climbed 15.3 percent to 2,704,500, the second-highest reading for any month on record.
Growth in visitors from South Korea, however, decelerated to 6.5 percent from more than 10 percent in recent months. The slowdown followed a major earthquake in northern Osaka Prefecture on June 18, Japan Tourism Agency Commissioner Akihiko Tamura told a press conference.
Tamura also mentioned the impact of the western Japan downpours, citing a spate of cancellations of accommodation bookings in less-affected tourist destinations such as Takayama, Gifu Prefecture.
Meanwhile, the agency said that spending per tourist in January-March came to ¥109,607 in Hokkaido, highest among all prefectures, thanks to spending by skiers and other visitors.
Tokyo came second with per-tourist spending of ¥97,047, followed by Nagano Prefecture with ¥77,191.
