The CM-400AKG is a Mach 4 plus-capable air-to-surface weapon in service with JF-17 fighter aircraft of the PAF.

The CM-400AKG is now part of the operational weapon set of the PAF's JF-17 Thunder multirole fighter. "This is a mature weapon that has been fully tested. It is not conceptual. It is in service," Air Commodore Mahmood Khalid, PAF JF-17 Deputy Project Director stated. "The CM-400AKG is a very high-speed missile that is very tough to intercept. It hits the target at Mach 4 or above and its kinetic impact alone is enough to destroy any high-value target, like an aircraft carrier."


The CM-400AKG is a 400 kg solid-rocket-powered weapon that can be fitted with either a penetration or blast/fragmentation warhead. It is a fire-and-forget precision-guided weapon that can be fitted with several seeker options, which are understood to include an active radar seeker and an imaging infrared seeker with target-recognition (TR) capabilities. PAF sources say the missile can be pre-programmed with digital imagery for highly precise attacks against fixed sites in TR mode, but it can also be re-targeted in flight by using the radar seeker option.

Assuming export of offensive weapons with range more than 350km is banned, and by looking at the size of the missile, i guess it would be about 300-350km.

Officials from Argentine aerospace company Fabrica Argentina de Aviones (FAdeA) stated at the 2013 Paris Air Show they have had multiple discussions with Chinese officials over potential co-production of the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) FC-1/JF-17multirole combat aircraft.

AVIC unveiled a two-seat model of the Chengdu FC-1 at the Paris Air Show 2013.

Discussions are far from concluded, with FAdeA officials saying "technology transfer" issues remain a sticking point. Nonetheless, the discussions are the first formal effort that could lead to the co-production of a modern Chinese fighter in Latin America. FAdeA officials said the co-produced FC-1 could be called the 'Pulqui-III', recalling FAdeA's Pulqui-II, Latin America's first swept wing jet fighter, which was designed by Germany's Kurt Tank for the government of Juan Peron.

FAdeA officials also made clear they would be dealing directly with China, rather than Pakistan, which is currently China's main partner in co-developing and co-producing the FC-1/JF-17. The officials added they were impressed with the twin-seat FC-1 revealed in model form at Paris, and acknowledged its potential to become a control platform for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

As yet no fast jets have been used in this capacity, although the US Army has brought manned/unmanned - teaming (MUM-T) operations, such as sharing full-motion video between AH-64 Apache helicopters and RQ-7 Shadow UAVs, into theatre in Afghanistan.

FAdeA already has a co-production program with Aviation Industries of China (AVIC) centered on the CZ-11 light helicopter, dubbed the Pampero (Winter Winds), which is a slightly modified copy of the Eurocopter AS350 Ecureuil. The first co-produced example is now undergoing certification testing, with series co-production to start in 2014. Early FAdeA projections were for 40 CZ-11s to be built for Argentine civil and military requirements.

While talks regarding a new fighter program with China are under way, FAdeA representatives also acknowledged longstanding reports that the Argentine government could opt to buy a small number of used aircraft to replace its retired Dassault Mirage III fighters, with retired Spanish Air Force Mirage F-1M fighters under consideration.

As a fighter platform, the CAC FC-1/JF-17 is in the same performance bracket as the Lockheed Martin F-16s operated by Chile and Mikoyan MiG-29s operated by Peru. What makes the FC-1 a potentially decisive combat aircraft in Latin America is its ability to employ a burgeoning array of modern Chinese weapons, such as the 100 km-range Luoyang SD-10A (PL-12) active radar-guided beyond visual range (BVR) air-to-air missile (AAM) and the very high speed CASIC CM-400AKG anti-ship missile, which has a range of 180-250 km.

The latter's impact velocity, which Pakistan officials have described as "hypersonic", could prove far more difficult to defend against than the subsonic-speed AM39 Exocet anti-ship missiles that sank the British Royal Navy Type 42 destroyer HMS Sheffield and damaged the container ship SS Atlantic Conveyor during the 1982 Falklands War.

China has long supported Argentina's claim to the Falkland/Malvinas Islands, which it views similarly to its quest to take control of Taiwan. Discussions regarding fighter co-production likely followed the early July 2012 visit to China by then Argentine Defence Minister Arturo Puricelli that saw agreement to deepen bilateral defence co-operation to potentially include future Argentine purchases of Chinese air defence and naval technology. FAdeA President Raul Argañaraz was part of the delegation for the July 2012 visit.

While China may be a suitable partner for Argentina, since the government re-acquired FAdeA in 2010 it has prioritized building up indigenous aerospace capabilities. In addition to the CZ-11 program, FAdeA is working towards a future six-ton helicopter co-production program, upgrading its IA-63 Pampa-III light jet trainer, and developing new unmanned aerial vehicles. It is also proceeding with its IA-73 UNASUR-1 initial trainer as a multinational Latin defence co-operation program under the aegis of the South American Defence Council of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR).

FAdeA is eager to offer additional programs under UNASUR but company officials also said they are keen to strengthen ties with the region's dominant aerospace company, Brazil's Embraer, for which FAdeA will be making components for the KC-390 turbofan-powered medium transport.

The good way to describe the situation is that the JF-17 is totally exclusive to the PAF, with no other arifroce having it. The bad way to describe it that the JF-17 is a cul-de-sac with only one house on it.

There is nothing to it---Rafale---one of the best aircraft in the industry---it is saved by india right at the moment of its death. All through the years---nobody wanted it---production has already come as close to a stop as could---dassault losing engineers and builders---and then the libya conflict starts---.

Selling an aircraft is not a simple task---. It takes about a year or two to check it out out to see if it meets your requirements---then negotiations---engine weapons and electronics package---. The taker also need to have funds to pay for it as well. The manufacturer is also conscious of what technology and what weapons package to release.

hehe, good one. Pulqui means arrow in indigenous language. I do not much like the name, but it is fairly accurate, I must say.

If FC-1 gets western missiles and avionics then what is the point in selling a Product which means you are essentially offering/selling Airframe to the customers slashing you own profits?...does it make sense? Absolutely Not!

The deal should be similar to US...No tampering with the Aircraft; missiles/radars and any other upgrades should come from China. We want FC-1 to be recognized internationally as A Competition not slashing profits by offering them to integrate western avionics/weapons.

If Argentina gets FC-1 with israeli radar and python/derby missiles then it would be no different then A-4 where in any war/conflict with UK; israelis might cripple them so will US without any spares. So China needs to offer a complete product/package. US is not going to provide AMRAAMs, would israelis sells Rafael Derby to Argentina i doubt so even if they do then be prepared israelis to check out FC-1.
