Jesus won’t save you — President Xi Jinping will, Chinese Christians told

Because that made China the safest country in the world, without violent religious/sectarian conflicts. Being a nonreligious person yourself, why do you have such a strong interest in religious issue in China? Is it in your best interest to see a constitutional atheist country turned into religious battleground?

China is doing just fine without a dominant religion, thanks for your concern.
Just because I am non-religious, that does not mean I subscribe to the false dichotomy that you do.

Do you see the US government persecuting -- not merely prosecuting -- any religion in America ?

Do you see Catholics petrol bombing Protestants ?

Do you see Mormons killing Baptists ?

You live in the US, you know better.

It is not that your China cannot be a religiously diverse people without the violence that your government claims is inevitable. It is that the ( false ) communists that are running your country simply do not like the idea that the people can believe in something that can be more compelling than the idea that the state is the solution for everything.

I have seen none of these in China either, so what is your point? What the heck is the "religious prosecution" in China you have kept bringing up here?

We know you have never been to China and you know very little about that country beyond regular bs msm have fed you, I bet you can't read Chinese and never watch Chinese CCTV, but somehow you think your are in the better position to pass judgement on China's "religious prosecution", or for that matter, anything about China? One thing for sure though, you have a lot of hatred to Chinese people and their government.

If you care so much about those lambs in China that are longing for salvage, why don't you turn yourself into a Christian then become a missionary in China? I know there are many these days, personal experience.

I don't really care what political system China is using, as long as Chinese are not killing each other on daily basis, and are well fed/clothed/educated, it is all fine with me. Why it's not OK with you?

“Help turn those who believe in religions into believing in the Party”

In the latest campaign, party members involved in poverty alleviation toured villages telling people how the party was supporting agriculture and removing poverty, “melting the hard ice in the hearts of religious believers” and “helping turn them into believers in the party.”

Qi Yan, chairman of the people’s congress in the township of Huangjinbu within Yugan county and the man in charge of the local poverty alleviation effort, told the South China Morning Post that villagers “should no longer rely on Jesus, but on the party for help.”

“Many poor households have plunged into poverty because of illness in the family. Some resorted to believing in Jesus to cure their illnesses,” Qi said. “But we tried to tell them that getting ill is a physical thing and that the people who can really help them are the Communist Party and General Secretary Xi.”

Qi said the campaign has been running since March in Huangjinbu township, with more than 1,000 portraits of Xi distributed and hung in homes. Christians make up around one-third of the population there, with between 5,000 and 6,000 families, he said.

“Many rural people are ignorant. They think God is their savior,” he said. “After our cadres’ work, they’ll realize their mistakes and think: We should no longer rely on Jesus, but on the party for help.”

In October, officials in Yugan county held a meeting in which they talked about “having a sense of crisis” about the presence of religion there, according to the county’s official website. County party secretary Hu Wei said they must insist on “uniting people of faith around the party.”

In August, officials also forcibly removed crosses in Yugan county, according to Radio Free Asia — mirroring a similar campaign that took place in recent years in neighboring Zhejiang province.

A resident of another township in Yugan, a man surnamed Liu, told the South China Morning Post that villagers had no choice but to comply.

“Some families put up gospel couplets on their front doors during the Lunar New Year; some also hung paintings of the cross. But they’ve all been torn down,” he said. “They all have their belief and, of course, they didn’t want to take them down. But there is no way out. If they don’t agree to do so, they won’t be given their quota from the poverty-relief fund.”

China’s constitution protects the right to religion, but the state also takes a dim view of any institution that might challenge its total control over society. So Christians, Buddhists, Muslims and others have the right to worship, but their houses of worship are often tightly controlled and can easily be shut down if deemed distracting or a threat to official dogma.

More than any other time in decades, the party is now seeking more control. At last month’s Party Congress in Beijing, Xi Jinping was granted another five years in power as general secretary, and elevated almost to the level of Mao in the Communist pantheon, with his name written into the party constitution. Critics say it spells a dangerous return to one-man rule in China, something that had disastrous results under Mao.

During his speech at the congress, Xi said religion must be guided by the party to adapt to socialist society.

A local newspaper in the southwestern province of Guizhou is already referring to Xi as “Great Leader” in a headline, a title that hasn’t been used since Mao’s era.

Meanwhile, Xi's slogans are almost ubiquitous in China, since the run-up to and aftermath of the Party Congress. This one means: “Stay true to the mission and keep it firmly in mind.”

Even at pro basketball games in China Xi Jinping's propaganda slogans are ever present.

I don't know what you are referring to by "sacrifice". You would be surprised how many perks Chinese minorities have been enjoying over majority Hans. Google Chinese version of "Affirmative Actions", and you will find out why some Hans tried to change their ethnicity to minorities.

slow news day? this is basically like a local meme, not taken seriously, especially not at the state level. this would be some americans calling obama god savior of the american people or the satan reincarnated himself. it's really not that serious. there is no cult following. the leadership of China does not allow that.

i dont doubt though, if the same message were to appear in india, proclaiming modi the new god savior of india, indians all over would rejoice and dance their bollywood dance and celebrating their imminent superpower stardom.

Those who did wisely... rised the Greatest Empires... But when they choosed to Control it likr z mere tool... They got destroyed...
This is why China has been a strictly secular state since ancient times.
No offense bro but All other great empires such as The Roman Empire, the Ottoman Turkey, the Mongol Empire, the British Empire, the Persian Empire, the Arab Empire.....have been eliminated from existence or severely and severely weakened. Although China has also been weakened as well, China has the potential to dominate the world, coz China was and is always a secular state for thousands of years. Religion makes people crazy in some level.

That has nothing to do with democracy.

Ballads ? What next, his penis size ?

Did you read the whole article? It's actually a well written and balanced article. It provides reasoning from both sides as well as the pros and cons. You're just quoting a part of it.

Other sceptics of a Xi personality cult also point out that the increasingly educated Chinese people would not accept another Mao-like personality cult.

"Unlike the Mao era, when most Chinese people were cut off from the outside world, today's Chinese people know what is good for them and what is good for their country. Collectively, they do not want to go back to the Mao era and would not allow the country to go back to that era," wrote analyst Chen Dingding of the University of Macau on the Diplomat portal on April 4. He added that the self-promotion efforts may be the work of Mr Xi's political opponents, using the "death by flattery" tactic: overly praising someone's capabilities to trigger public disgust and backlash.
But there is no doubt that the Chinese President has been projecting his personality more forcefully than his predecessors, as part of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) return to a strongman leadership, which had been put aside by Deng Xiaoping from the 1980s in favour of a collective decision-making style of government.

There are two goals: to bolster the central leadership's ability to push back against powerful factions that are blocking much-needed reforms; and to increase affection among a public that has been disillusioned with the perceived weak leadership of Mr Hu from 2002 to 2012.

Also, it helps that Mr Xi does have a strong personality that is well received by the people. After all, the public response to his speeches and actions - from his first remarks as CCP chief in November 2012 to his first inspection tour in southern Shenzhen - has been encouraging.
But for now, it does not hurt to be vigilant against the possibility of the self-promotion efforts intensifying into a veritable personality cult for the CCP's self-preservation, and not for the country's benefit. A key part of personality cults is the suppression of criticisms against the leader and his policies, essentially turning the people into blind, unquestioning followers.

It can't be good for China if there is no room for constructive feedback to help improve government policies. The cultivation of a personality cult might even boomerang on Mr Xi if the suppression of contrary views or negative news leads to bigger public crises and challenges to his leadership.

. . .
.
Then why is the Chinese government so afraid of religions ?
They aren't afraid of religion. But they are afraid of simple minded folks like yourself who will turn to be a fanatic.
Btw, I am a Catholic and yes religion is a stupid cult.

Pretty easy choice, considering that Xi Jinping actually exists. :enjoy:
Exactly!
