Seems they have finally a continous radar illumination for AAW capability, and that is really wellcome. But the frigate needs a IFF antenna (usually a small antenna over the search radar) and if possible a news search radar. But that illumination radar gives it a real AAW capability.

On the other hand the Kamand CIWS is needed of optronic guidance system. And it is much better to have a combined laser telemeter/IR/TV low intensity + Radar. It will give real multitrack signal for targetting radar antiship missile point defence.

Anyway Sahand has growing so much, and it is just a step. Naval construction is showing maturity in Iran, and Turbine Gas and VLS are so near for reaching a truly ocean multirole frigate.

As you can see they have also separated the superstructure where the 30mm CIWS Kamand is installed.

Therefore, the superstructure that supports the 30mm CIWS will certainly contain the 30mm ammunition inside.
Now the question to ask what will be used for in the separate superstructure :
1) Will it house an optronic guidance system, as on the IRIS Alborz frigate (72)?
2) or....... VLS for short-range anti-aircraft missiles?

They look to have removed a section of what may have been just sheet metal,that appeared to join the 2 sections of the structure together.
This does explain why there appeared to be 2 types of kamand ciws,the smaller version and the longer version.In fact it appears that theres only one,and that the rear extended section on the longer versions was possibly always intended for mounting a future radar and optronic system,as it is interesting that we havent seen the other optronics and manual fire control systems,that we saw with the first kamand system that was fitted to one of the old alvands,fitted to any of the other boats equipped with the kamand.

only difference, on the IRIS Alborz frigate (72) the optronic pointing system + the remote manual pointing system are in a much higher superstructure than that of the Kamand

Maybe IRGC can make them unmanned, with IR/TV self-target identification (for avoiding spoofing and jamming signal between home naval base and USV). Those boats are suicide, but combining them in swarm, making them invulnerable to ECM/ECCM techniques, and sincronizing their attack with cruise missiles (Nasr/Noor/Ghadir/Ghader) and antiship ballistic missiles like Khalije Fars would make a nightmare for any US Navy or Royal Navy operation inside the Persian Gulf.

Iran was actually one of the first countries to used robotic suicide speedboats via Youthis.

But the PG is incredibly narrow (less than 25KM at certain areas if you remove territorial waters).

These speedboats are basically impossible to tell apart from fishing dwows on radar and are hard to see on open water. So short of shutting down the PG to all commercial traffic, the enemy won’t know what it a what.

Let’s not forget the enemy is during this time focused on stopping the CMs and BMs coming at its naval fleet. These ships tasks are two fold,

1) distract enemy from intercepting shore line/air launched CMs and BMs

2) distract the CWIS systems with cheap rockets so the other fleet of speedboats carrying CMs can successfully penetrate.

You might lost 10-20 speedboats per encounter but succeed in immobilizing several 1B+ navy warships. Any general will take that exchange 9 times out of town.

While I agree it would be best to make the entire fleet AI unmanned operated, the issue is likely two fold

1) higher cost

2) vulnerable to ECW/jamming. Since Iran lacks Sat comms, it must use ground stations. So if Americans succeed in severing that link you have a fleet of useless paperweights

No if you build them without receivers and emitters. All signals can be jammed, except the one that is not emitted. You can make a basic AI making them "Home on Jam" for example, and combining a basic visual identify guide storage data and use mainly of the shelf commercial (hard disks, low intensity/IR cameras, and somer inercial guidance, and subordinate all three ways to guide for avoiding spoofing or changuing jamming emissions. Even you can use inertial guidance to approach to the enemy fleet (without using GPS/GLONASS guidance) hit out of the Persian Gulf and make a fast retreatment inside Persian Gulf for example, letting some FAC boats burning to let them think IRGC Navy has been defeated and attack them with all weapons inside Gulf. Even small israeli suicide UAVs has basic AI capability to discriminate targets.
