Iran Seeks Strategic Partnership with India

I don't think that is happening; at least not in respect of Russia. Russia right now only wants to secure its southern flank while USA wants to shift its focus to Asia. In the CARs; both will make adjustments. Nobody will be able cut the other out. Iran is no push-over state. Plus that "evil empire syndrome" between USA and Russia is over.
@Capt.Popeye, what Iran will do is take the place of Pakistan in what happened during SU takeover of Afghanistan, and the US will allow Iran into Afghanistan - because they apparently are supporting the same people this time round compared to what happened the last time. This sample testing is already ongoing in Afg - Iran already has presence through social centers and hospitals in Kabul.

Iran gets into Afghanistan and gets closer to the central Asian region and gets access to the resources which would transit through Iran - the US probably gets transit route, and berthing for its ships and a direct linkage by road and rail to Afghanistan.

I see something on these lines - I could be wrong here too, as Israeli pressure vis a vis Iran is enormous - but if as it seems to be happening - Iran abandons it's nuclear plan - then most likely scenario is Iran will play a major part in Afghanistan.

As for the US pivot to Asia - that's definitely on so is US movement towards Africa, Afghanistan is prime for the US, though lately they have been finding it very difficult to hold on to it because ...

Pakistan and the US do not have the same goals, but the support group is the same when it comes to Iran and the US. Iran already has been surrounded by the US and it's allies on all sides- they desperately are looking to expand outwards and expanding towards Afg is their best bet. For all this the US will want Iran's help in curbing Russian and Chinese presence in the region, which they might be forced to do.

Kalu won't let that happen. it's against his ++++++ ideas.

Islamic Republic of Iran was never in Indian Interests.

Like any big power, we should have Balochi and Kurd Freedom Fighters in Hand to peddle Islamic Republic of Iran to toe to Indic Interests in the region.

umm ... false flag alert.

Another more radical and less believable extension to that scenario: that the USA can use this route in future to sustain the remaining US presence in Afghanistan post the 2014 draw-down in Afghanistan. Even Russia will not oppose that idea. So let us keep watching and see how this prediction pans out. Don't believe me, but keep a sharp eye to the future. :)

The big obstacle to this is the Israel-Iran hostility. The US will never compromise on Israel's security.

Can the US and Israel accommodate Iran's emergence as a regional power, and can Iran and its allies (e.g. Hezbollah) take a moderate and responsible stand with respect to Israel?

What USA wants and what Iran wants will be completely different when the topic is not Afghanistan, doubt that Iran will suddenly become all friendly with USA. Just like we and USA they have our differences they too will, however Iran will not try to cut out Russian and China just for Afghanistan. It is too costly a gamble.

It all depends on Iran's diplomatic strength and its ability to negotiate.

@indushek, it's just my assessment, as I said I could be wrong though I have a strong feeling ftowards something like that happening.

Interesting to point out that, the foundation for the pipline between India and Iran was laid out in February 1999 i.e prior to Kargil.

Iran to India Natural Gas Pipeline

I like to see a proper government explanation. Until 2010 when India was committed to the project, It knew the risks associated with it or else they would not have joined it if that was the reason

@mafiya

You are ignoring a very important fact. The gas prices have crashed since the negotiations had began for IPI pipeline due to tapping of shale gas and methane hydrates by major economies of the world.

IPI has stopped making sense because of economic factors also.
