Why is it that people start pontificating even before they have come to first grips with a subject?

What distinguishes scientific disciplines from others is the application of the Scientific Method. You cannot differentiate between one branch of science and another and claim that you accept physics but not biology, or that the theory of evolution is not science. It is not available to us to chop up scientific activity and accept one part but not others.
