I completely agree with you many of the evil practices like sati, child marriages, etc etc has been banned,
But the hindu philosophy is based on four castes correct me if i am wrong
1) Brahman
2) Khastriya
3) Vysha
4) Dalit,
Main goal of hinduism here to acheive moksha complete freedom and to attain it one must have to go through multiple cycles of life and birth,
i.e if someone is born dalit he must have committed grave sins in her past life
vice versa if someone is brahman tht means he must have committed some good deeds in thier past lives so they are born as brahmans gods decision

On the other hand hinduism is not a state religion of india as india is a secular democracy agreed, but hinduism is a religion of majority of indians - and caste system is not in the indian law, as indian law protects its minorities it also protects its majority intersts so Hindus are free to practice their religion based on their sacred books and beliefs..
