Bangalore: Tired and frustrated over the increasing fuel prices? A team of 11 engineering students claim to hold the key to unlock the door to more economical and happier drives. Team Inferno from Sir M Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology (MVIT) has developed a prototype of a car which delivers a mileage of a whopping 240 km per litre.

Team Inferno is one of the 12 teams from India participating in the Shell Eco Marathon, scheduled to be held from July 4 to 7 at Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Their car, named Drona, will compete with cars developed by 150 other teams from Asia.

“We started brainstorming over this from September last year. The actual work on the car started in February. We were determined to develop a car that delivers a super mileage, which is one of the requirements of the competition,” said Avinash Hegde, a first year Mechanical Engineering student and a member of Team Inferno.

Drona’s prototype, as of now, can accommodate one person. The extraordinary mileage is achieved with a modified Bajaj engine, aluminium chassis, electronic fuel injection, aerodynamic design, direct transmission and other factors.

“The prototype has been developed with the competition in mind. We have not thought about factors such as suspensions as the tracks at Sepang are flat,” added Nischal Muralidhar, another Mechanical Engineering student.

The prototype uses glass-fibre reinforced plastic for its outer body and can race up to 60 km per hour. “The prototype is ready and will be on its way to Malaysia for the marathon. We have spent nearly Rs 2.5 lakh on this,” said Avinash.

Nischal added that this was not the last of Drona. “We know there is a great potential. With the help of sponsors, we are determined to come up with another version that can deliver better mileage in city conditions,” he said.

this is all bs.. these kind of projects keep coming up , but what we ened is fundamental scientic breakthroughs , not engineering tinkering. I dont think there is any scientific breakthru acheived by using a bajaj engine. so this car woul be having some trade off like power or something to achieve this mileage.
if you remember there are articles which said that indian boy develops OS more efficient than windows.. but failed to give specifics of what it did.
this can be categorised as jugaad and nothing more

The competition is for high mileage competition.. And yes, if u want to gain something u have gotta lose something.. The speed of the car will be not be great, but it has mileage... In this age of higher crude oil prices, this car is very much compatible...
But the real toughness remain on how to make this automobile commercially viable!!

ok.. i have an infinite mileage vehicle for 1 ltr of pertol
Its called cycle, bullock cart. I carry one lire of petrol in a bottle and pedal my cycle or say.. drrr.dddrrrrr to the bullock

That is completely untrue. Engineering makes the difference most of the times and not scientific breakthroughs though science itself drives technology from behind. Today's search technology is not a result of any scientific discovery. It is all engineering. We Indians are very bad at enterprise unless it is selling things which others made. Otherwise, with some good branding we can even sell this car in US under some eco-friendly bracket.

I am not very much impressed with the car though. It has cycle wheels in spite of the awesome body.

Is that even a car?? Look at the tyres, it looks like auto cycle... or an auto rickshaw with 3 cycle tyres..

Point is, car is supposed to be at least two seater and need to have some comfort/safety mechanism.. They should try to make it look like a car first before calling it a car..

But for college contest, I would agree it's a nice development by school kids.. Congrats!! But please stop calling it a car!!

.
the contest is for achieving high mileage , their car has enough technical requirements to be qualified for the race n that's all matters..

but im pretty sure they are not goin to win with thier 240km /liter considering the fact that record holds @ 5385 km/l ..:woot: by this car

much better looking than this isn't it ...:azn:

yeah they improved the bike and called it. I hear such discovery every other day, most of tall claims come from south east Asia. If the project cannot be implemented commercially what's the point of being highest mileage? I do not think, that will be purpose of competition.

A lot of people claimed they created a browser, by creating a wrapper over IE and calling its API. Gullible people on the forum do not even know the scale of testing needed for a browser, it cannot be done by one person.

Nothing more than a fourth year (mechanical engineering) graduation project.

Nopes. I hold a double major in Industrial / Metallurgical Engineering and a Masters in Metallurgical Eng (specialist in powder metallurgy). Both are branches of mechanical and almost all of the undergrad course-load was with Mechanical engineering. Therefore, I guess, I am qualified enough :)

Though I didn't make a career out of my education.
Seems like you hold PhD in Mech. Eng. :smokin:

Drona’s prototype, ....

Not to TC, but why on earth everyone is posting a faded black and white pic? You would think Indian MvIT have one cell phone carrying hot chick with a decent 5 MP color camera smiling and shrieking take my, take my,

take my pic in front of this cool car.

Ok no monkey business inside the car. It seats only one. And obviously a backseat is out of question. :)

Other than that, good for the students. Hope next year they can put one together with 300 km/l.

peace
