What's new

India lower caste still removing human waste

There are only 4 varnas or 4 divisions of the society. Within these varnas there are thousands of subgroups.
Belonging to this subgroups also passing hereditarily, like to 4 varnas?

.
How many castes exist at all? I always thought that 4.

Hundreds of castes exists in India...... Let me tell you an example, My nick is my sirname (third name) and it is actually a caste..... Under this caste there are 61 sub castes, ie there 61 types of nair....... I dono how one can count these castes...

.
I know it will take time to uplift them as a society, but if govt decides they can rehabilitate one member of the family and put them in to some job or help them get one...... That will be the beginning, once they earn decent amount from other jobs.....

That is already done. If there are jobs available in the unskilled category, they already get it anyways. It depends on those people too. If there is drunkeness in the family then it is going to be hard. You seek this with rag pickers. If they are hooked to sniffing glue or some other drugs, double hard.

And is there an unified hierarchy, like in army?

Yeah it has become sort of hereditary only in name, no one follows it anymore. People do what job they are qualified to do and not stick to what job their caste has prescribed for them. It is only a group identity now. Nothing more than that.

. .
So the people who can afford to hire these lower caste people to collect waste can't afford to install proper sanitation o_O

Got to agree with here, In kerala they are better off, if not a job like this, even the other skilled jobs like, carpenter, mesan, painter get minimum of a 500 rupee a day (which is roughly 8 dollars), But as you said attappady and muthanga are 2 prominant places where we have tribes, and those people live atleast 3 decades behind us....

700 for malayali workers in our area and 400 for migrant labours.

. .
SC/STs are some what better now in Kerala..Go to any government/village/muncipal offices or supplyco, triveni quite a lot of employees are from this community..
i think, the most neglected groups are poor minority adivasi tribes of Kerala..They are not a vote bank,so the politicans are not considering their matters seriously...
haven't you read the article about the recent pattini maranam in Attapady??..

Ya I heard about that .And you are right there. But Adivasis have some attachments with their culture and traditions in forest restrain them from to choose a modern life .
Lower castes in outside world dont have such obligation and their only issue was untouchability. Then again interest and using opportunity is also a issue.

.
Well i think it used to be there decades ago (in my state) nothing now,
We also had 4 castes (sosloviya) up to 1917 Revolution. Over time, this has changed. However, for this we needed a bloody civil war, cost us about 10% of population. Would be better if we go in evolutionary way, like India.

.
That is why i said let us not look at the caste, but look at the people who are forced to do this job (when i say forced i mean poverty)..... I dont think it will take a lot of money to help these poor men/women, and our govt can afford to do that,

Actually Govt distribute a lot of benefits through different schemes. But poor peoples and in some case even educated person dont know most of them .That is where the problem lies.
And from my experience most of lower caste people ,except few creamy elite or brilliant ,dont even interested in study .Some of them only visit school for receiving their grant and using it for other purpose. Now things are getting better .But these problems still are rampant in some area.
Only my personal experience in college gave me this impression. One of my college mate who found last place in entrance rank list got merit seat in my college because he was a SC student .He joined college and got drop out in 3 year because he dont want to study.
Fees for merit seat was 35000 during that time and he was succeeded for a scholarship from SC/ST welfare dept by giving his less income certificate .Means his one year fee was just 1000 rs.
Govt did their job here by giving him all facilities and support. This might be one from few exceptional case or not .But situation like this is a problem in India.

...i don't know why our stupid Kerala government are not talking any steps for adivasi upliftment??..
A lot of them are living without land, house, rations or don't have the facilities to go schools etc..look the chengara, vayanad samaram...aadivasis are protesting their for pattayam..but no one cares them.
On the other hand,Government is giving free land, houses, rations, building ......medium schools for the immigrant plantation workers of munaar and permeedu..
stupid....
