‘India emerging as hub for metro coaches’


Thanks buddy.

They've finally decided its going to be mainly overhead for most of the 35+ kms, with only stations (in really congested areas) being underground.

The underground metro is very expensive compared to the overhead (exponentially so).

And the DMIC (DMRC?) basically told the Pune guys that would be unwilling to foot the bill for the underground one.

So the decision made itself. Because we (Pune) are kangaal .....

Metro has become very common in India and its just started .Lots more to come . Same should happen with Bullet trains . Our export quality and price will far better than Chinese .
Again a "will, shall, should, is going to be, are going to be" comment from India. Doing is always far better than saying. If anything could be learnt from China's economic miracle in the past three decades, that is: be silent, before you really make something happen!

Any chances of Jammu getting a Metro ?

Deputy Chief Minister, Dr. Nirmal Singh has urged the Union Railway Minister, Suresh Prabu for exploring the possibility of starting metro train services in the capital cities of the State and also asked for constitution of an expert committee for the same.
The Deputy Chief Minister was interacting with the Union Railway Minister who was on a tour to the J&K State.

“There is an urgent need of providing metro services to the cities of Jammu and Srinagar which have witnessed large scale urbanization besides the population of these two cities has also increased geometrically leading to increase in traffic related problems. The metro service could provide much needed remedy to solve the traffic woes,” he added.

The Chief Minister said Visakhapatnam will be developed as one of the best cities in India with support from the Narendra Modi government.

The first phase of metro rail project in the port city will be completed by 2018. The proposed international airport at Bhogapuram in adjoining Vizianagaram district, once completed, will help in making Visakhapatnam a great city, he said.

Indian Railways has initiated a comprehensive proposal in collaboration with TheUnited Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO) to revamp Mumbai’s Bandra Sub-Urban Station with a view to not only transform this station into an efficient transportation hub but also to reinforce its status as a heritage landmark. This would be in line with Bandra precinct’s highly cultural and cosmopolitan character.

Under an agreement between Indian Railways and UNESCO, a comprehensive management plan is being prepared for Bandra Station which is hailed as “queen of suburbs” of Mumbai. A century old railway station, Bandra is home to some of the oldest religious shrines, Portuguese Fort, film studios, East Indian Christian Settlements, Anglo-Indian bakeries and art galleries. This station epitomizes and exemplifies the heritage and has been recognized as a Grade-I heritage property with an excellent blend of Victorian Gothic and the Vernacular style of architecture.

UNESCO has now submitted their first report focusing on Urban Design strategy with an Action Plan for improvements in circulating area of Bandra sub-urban Railway Station to Minister for Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu. This report proposes to develop a high quality and culturally relevant public realm, a diverse and vibrant space as well as a community asset. Priority will be given to the pedestrians and universal access while creating an attractive and comfortable environment. The main features of the UNESCO’s recommendations include realigning approaches and relieving congestion, streamlining the movement at entry/exit of station for effective access and transfer and public realm enhancements to reinforce civic significance. The report also contains a series of steps to improve disabled-accessibility.

The second and the final report by UNESCO for Bandra station focusing on conservation and management plan of the station building is expected next month. Western Railway (Headquarters Mumbai) has already chalked out the implementation plan. The implementation of these reports will completely transform the experience of passengers and other visitors to this unique station and give a boost to preservation of rich heritage of Mumbai.

Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhu has been taking keen interest in the effort to redevelop Bandra Station to provide enhanced facilities to customers while reinforcing the grandeur and magnificence of this landmark station building. Acknowledging the enthusiasm of the Railways, UNESCO took merely 3 months to come out with the report since an agreement to prepare the reports was signed between Shri Manu Goel, Executive Director, Railway Board and Mr. Shigeru Aoyagi, Director, UNESCO, New Delhi on 26th June, 2015. Indian Railways is also the proud custodian of four world heritage sites – Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal (formerly Victoria Terminus), Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway and Kalka Shimla Railway.

Hard rocks and cracked buildings pose hurdles for Namma Metro as it “struggles” to meet its much-touted deadline of April 2016 for the much-beleaguered Phase I of the metro network.

On the sidelines of a programme to commemorate the “breakthrough” achieved in the underground section leading from Kempegowda interchange to Sampige Metro Station on Saturday, Pradeep Singh Kharola, Managing Director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL), told presspersons: “We hope to have the tunnelling and civil works in the north-south line complete by March. Only after that can we start the trials and the process for getting safety clearance begins.”

If one were to look at the travails of Magadi Road to Mysuru Road section (Reach II), which is scheduled to open soon, the trials had started in March, while the safety clearance was given only a month ago.

For the metro, the stretch between Sampige station and Kempegowda interchange, where the troubled Godavari tunnel-boring machine is moving ahead, has nearly 500 m of progress to meet, much of it being hard rock. Officials, however, were confident of achieving a “breakthrough” in three months. “Within four days, the TBM will be put on full swing … We are struggling hard to meet the April deadline (set by the State and Union governments),” said Mr. Kharola.

Another source of delay could be the Kaveri TBM which is struggling to progress between Chickpet and Kempegowda interchange. Cracks developing in the older buildings of the area have seen the work halt until the structures are strengthened —as seen in the cracks in three buildings in Balepet area. Though the TBM has 200 m more to go, nearly 15 identified “weak” buildings stand in the way of speedy progress.

“Chickpet is a difficult area as there are many old buildings or those with mud walls and weak foundations. We cannot proceed until any weak parts of critical buildings are attended to,” said Mr. Kharola.

There is, however, good news for the commuters who live along the east-west line between Byappanahalli and Mysuru Road. BMRCL officials said the line would be opened by the year-end.

Lucknow/Sri City: Alstom Transport India on Friday handed over the first set of rolling stock for the Lucknow Metro Rail project from its manufacturing facility at Sri City in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.

Lucknow is the third Metro project after Chennai and Kochi for which Alstom is supplying its cars manufactured at Sri City.
