Indian Railways starts collecting feedback about basic amenities through phones using IVRS based system

Railway PSU IRCTC entrusted with this task of collecting feedback
With a view to improve passenger amenities in running trains and stations, Indian Railways has started collecting feedback from the public about the basic amenities from this month. Collecting this kind of feedback is in line with the emphasis given by Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu on the best connect between railway administration and railway users.

The job of collecting this significant feedback has been entrusted to its own PSU namely “Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC)”. The feedback is being collected by IRCTC through Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) with the number +91-139. Under this system, travelling passengers are being contacted randomly on their mobile phones to gather their feedback about the facilities provided by the Railways in six areas, namely, cleanliness of station/platform/train, quality of catering, level of cooling of AC, quality of food, punctuality of train and quality of bedrolls.

Out of the six facilities, a passenger is asked to send his/her feedback on only two facilities. They are given three options of pressing on mobile – 2 (Two) for Good, 1(one) for Satisfactory and 0(Zero) for unsatisfactory/Bad – with regard to a particular amenity.

On an average 60-70 calls per day per train are being made and efforts are done to make approximately one lakh successful calls per day to passengers of mail / express trains.

The feedback will help improve passenger amenities and also help fix accountability of service providers.

Italian deal makes Titagarh Wagons bullish on metro coaches
Acquisition of Firema Trasporti S.p.A. of Italy will enable Kolkata based Chowdharys of Titagarh Wagons (TWL) to foray into manufacturing of metro coaches.

KOLKATA: Acquisition of Firema Trasporti S.p.A. of Italy will enable Kolkata-based Chowdharys of Titagarh Wagons (TWL) to foray into manufacturing of metro coaches and high-speed trains for the global as well as domestic market, and aggressively participate in tenders for metro coaches both in both the markets.

"We now have the technology to manufacture metro coaches. We have done some refurbishment work for metro coaches, but till now did not manufacture them. After the acquisition, we will be able to participate in the tenders for metro coaches, including the one to be floated for the proposed East West Metro Rail project by Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation later this year.

We will also be able to manufacture metro coach for the upcoming Lucknow and Mumbai metro projects," said Umesh Chowdhary, vice-chairman and managing director, Titagarh Wagons.

Elaborating on the Centre's proposal of public-private partnership (PPP) model for metro projects, Chowdhary said: "Our foray into metro coach and high-speed train manufacturing at this time will add significant value to Titagarh Wagons' existing business."

Titagarh Wagons' acquisition of Firema Trasporti entails transfer of technology, all tangible and intangible assets and some liabilities relating to ongoing orders. The group bought the Italian firm through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) christened Titagarh Firema Adler, which is registered in Milan, Italy. While Titagarh Wagons holds 90% of the SPV's equity capital, the rest is with Adler Plastics S.p.A., an Italian firm roped in as partner by the Chowdharys.

"The TWL board has cleared an investment of about 20-25 million euro for the acquisition as well as upgrade of the Italian firm's operation. Internal accruals as well as external borrowings by TWL's wholly owned subsidiary Titagarh Singapore Pte will be used to fund the deal and the modernisation plan," a company official said.

Asked about the prospects of the SPV in the face of the Eurozone crisis, TWL Chairman JP Chowdhary said: "Our French subsidiary has been performing well despite the Eurozone crisis."

Presently, the SPV has an order book of 220 million euro. Going forward, Firema Trasporti will focus on the entire European region, Africa and the Middle East.He said the SPV doesn't need any subsidies from the Italian government, except in R&D, for a turnaround in its revenue or profit.

Now Namma Metro tunnel ride just a few months away

Smriti Sharma Vasudeva, August 3, 2015, Bengaluru, DHNS
Work on underground stretch almost over, trials next month

493014_thump.jpg

Bengalureans’ date with the underground stretch of Metro rail now seems closer than ever before.

Pending works on the underground stretch are to be completed soon to facilitate the trial run. Key works including third rail system, laying of power transmission cables and signalling are being carried out. BMRCL officials say that the preparatory work will be over by mid-September and then the trials will begin on the nearly five-kilometre underground stretch.

Entire purple line

If all goes well, the entire purple line - from Baiyappanahalli to Mysuru Road - will become operational. The east-west corridor (20 km) will be covered in a few minutes. Trains have been running on Reach-1 (MG Road-Baiyappanahalli) for a few years now. Officials say that once the trial run starts, it will take two to three months for the internal trials and another month or less for the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) to give the necessary clearance to start commercial operations.

Already two Metro trains have passed through the tunnel, from Cubbon Park underground station to the elevated Magadi Road station, while they were transported to the Magadi Road-Mysuru Road stretch for trials there in March. Since there was no depot near either of the two stations (Mysuru Road station and Magadi Road station), the trains had to be transported through the underground route. In a way, the safety of the tunnels has already been established, said an official. The trains passed through the Vidhana Soudha, Central College, Majestic and City stations and emerged at the elevated Magadi Road station.

At the Cubbon Park underground station, BMRCL has already completed civil works. It has restored Cubbon Road and opened it for traffic. At the Vidhana Soudha underground station too, most of the civil works are over and BMRCL is in the process of restoring Ambedkar Veedhi above the station.

Magadi Rd-Mysuru Rd may open post-poll

The Magadi Road-Mysuru Road stretch may be opened for commercial operations after BBMP elections - the code of conduct for which is in place - if it gets the green signal from the CRS by then. The internal trial runs on the Magadi Road-Mysuru Road stretch have been completed by various agencies. Presently, BMRCL is focussing on applying for safety trials by the CRS on the stretch.

CM unveils train design, new logo of Kochi metro - The Hindu
Updated: September 4, 2015 05:46 IST

Kochi Metro’s new logo and coach design were unveiled by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy at Cochin International Airport on Thursday.

The ‘interim’ logo in the shape of Malayalam letter ‘Ka’ (that stood for Kochi) paved the way for the revised logo bearing acronym ‘KM’ that stands for Kochi metro and its integration with different modes of public transport, KMRL sources said. While the ‘K’ will wear a turquoise colour, ‘M’ will take a different shade depending on integration with each commuting mode. Thus, yellow will be metro in itself, light blue will show its integration with water bus, violet with bus, dark blue with bicycle and red with taxi services.

First set of coaches

The manufacturer Alstom is expected to supply the first set of coaches for trial runs in 100 days, Mr. Chandy said.

As was reported, the turquoise-coloured façade of each train would resemble a tusker, with the headlight cluster resembling a pair of tusks. The colour is a blend of blue and green.

They are arguably the most modern in the country, with the capability to be converted to driverless coaches in future as well as one of the fastest delivered metro coaches in the world, with an initial delivery period of only eight months, claimed KMRL.

A three-coach train manufactured in Alstom’s unit at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh will be 65 m long and can carry up to 975 passengers. Tata Elxsi was appointed to enhance commuter experience and their suggestions have been implemented.

PM inaugurates Badarpur-Faridabad Metro Line

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today declared that the respect for armed forces veterans and those who laid down their lives for the nation is paramount for the country. Recalling his promise of delivering One-Rank, One-Pension for the armed forces personnel, the Prime Minister said the Union Government had fulfilled this promise, with the announcement made yesterday. He said that the cost of implementing this promise would be around Rs. 8000 crore to Rs. 10,000 crore, which was significantly higher than some estimates that had been made earlier. The Prime Minister was speaking after inaugurating the Badarpur-Faridabad Metro Line at Faridabad.

The Prime Minister regretted that it had become a fashion to politicize every decision taken by the Union Government for the progress of the country. Asserting that no one should mislead the jawans and the people of the nation, the Prime Minister said that the country would progress not through Raj-neeti (politics), but through Rashtra-neeti (nationalist policies).

The Prime Minister said that a significant proportion of army jawans were from Haryana, and therefore, the announcement of OROP would contribute significantly to Haryana's economy.

Reiterating that development is the solution to all problems, the Prime Minister said the Union Government is taking all steps for India's development. He said the whole world had recently faced economic difficulties, but India's economy had stood firm. He added that all State Governments and the Union Government had to move forward shoulder to shoulder. He reiterated his Government's resolve for Housing for All by 2022.

The Prime Minister travelled from Central Delhi to Faridabad, and back, by metro. In the course of the journey, he interacted with several people, especially youth, who were also travelling on board the metro train.

Alstom’s Metropolis for Kochi – design unveiled for the first time

kochi-metro-rail-design.jpg.image.784.410.jpg

The Kochi metro was designed by Alstom’s Design & Styling department in Saint-Ouen in collaboration with the operator KMRL and TATA Elxsi to enhance passenger experience, reflect KMRL’s identity and blend seamlessly into the city.

The train is composed of 3 cars and is about 65 meters-long. It has an open gangway allowing passengers to walk from one end of the train to the other. The interior provides a feeling of serenity and security with sections marked in two bright, harmonious colors: green turquoise and lemon used for the seats and the handles. The metro train comprises 136 seats per car in a longitudinal seating arrangement optimizing transport capacity (975 passengers per car) and facilitating passenger boarding. The seats are made of a polyester composite, making them particularly easy to clean and maintain. For the comfort of elderly passengers or pregnant women, priority seats are filled with cushions. Persons with reduced mobility and wheelchair users will be able to use dedicated areas in the metro car while commuting.

Kochi_metro_design_int.jpg

The front end of the train is made of polyester. Mostly green turquoise in color, it perfectly reflects KMRL’s new image, reinforced by the distinctive shape of its curved windshield. Representing an iconic symbol of India, the front LED lights are in the shape of elephant's tusks. As the metro runs on a viaduct, the lights will illuminate the city at night. The side of the train is made of stainless steel. The train panels are made with aluminum and composites as well as anti-graffiti protection. The metro train features four external sliding doors per side making passenger traffic much smoother.

Xavier Allard, Director Design & Styling, Alstom Transport said, “The design of the Kochi metro has set a new benchmark in urban mobility in India with its aesthetically-pleasing and stylish designs and technological innovations promoting greener urban transportation in the country. The metro for Kochi supports KMRL’s efforts to provide a comfortable, attractive and reliable service to Kochi residents and illustrates one of Alstom’s key strategies to enhance passenger experience”.

After long wait, Pune Metro project gets Centre's green light | Zee News
Last Updated: Wednesday, September 9, 2015 - 22:02
Pune: After a long wait, the Pune Metro project on Wednesday received the Centre's nod, paving the way for over Rs 11,000-crore work for overhead rails to ease the worsening traffic congestion in the city.

"The Centre has accepted my report on the (Metro) project and cleared it for early resumption of work," Girish Bapat, a Maharashtra Minister, told PTI here after his meeting with Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari, Venkaiah Naidu and Prakash Javadekar in Delhi.

Bapat, who holds portfolio of Food & Drug Administration, is also the Guardian Minister of Pune district.

Mired in controversies that led to its delay, the Pune Metro project's feasibility had raised doubts because of the cost entailed by previous proposals advocating underground rails. Now a major portion of the Metro will be overhead to cut cost of the project conceived six years back.

"The cost factor should make the fare of the Metro journey affordable for commuters," Bapat said.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis as well as Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari -- both hailing from Nagpur -- had attracted criticism from the Opposition and other quarters for their alleged "favouritism" in piloting and getting sanctioned the Nagpur Metro project before that of Pune's.

According to an NCP release issued today, the party delegation led by its President Sharad Pawar, too, met Naidu, the Union Urban Development minister, and urged him to expedite the Pune Metro venture.
