This will now enable the metro rail authorities to approach the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety to further test the trains before giving the final nod to start services
Hyderabad Metro Rail project got its first interim clearance for running trains between Nagole and Mettuguda, the first construction stage on Corridor Three-Nagole to Shilparamam/Raidurg. The Ministry of Railways Research Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO) has issued the ‘speed certificate’ for running trains at a maximum speed of 80 kmph. The clearance, obtained earlier this month, will now enable the metro rail authorities to approach the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) of SCR to further test the trains before giving the final nod for start of commercial operations.

HMR Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy said the certification has come after more than six months of rigorous testing of all 14 three coach rakes in Uppal depot.Trains were tested to go up to 90 kmph and permission was given for 80 kmph although in reality, average speed will be 35 kmph with a station every kilometre,” he explained.

Testing for trains overhead included for oscillation, emergency braking systems, speed potential, electric cabling, regenerative energy systems, etc., in empty and loaded conditions on the eight kilometre stretch. Each of the self-propelled bi-directional train sets (built by Hyundai Rotem) consisting of three coaches, which can be extended to six coaches, had two driving motor coaches at both ends and one trailer coach between. RDSO has highlighted that all high voltage equipment and cable provided on the under frame of the metro coaches has ensured separation between power and passenger areas. The trains had exhibited “satisfactory” riding behaviour upto a maximum speed of 90 kmph…” hence, it has “certified that these Hyderabad Metro coaches are fit for operation up to a maximum speed of 80 kmph on metro standard gauge system”.

Sydney metro trains to be made near Chennai

CHENNAI: In two years, Chennai port will be exporting trains to Australia. The Alstom manufacturing facility at Sri City, near Tada on Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border, will be constructing 22 trains consisting six coaches each for the upcoming metro train project in Sydney. Chennai port will ship out the trains by end of 2016.

Recently a team of Australian officials visited the unit and were satisfied with the facilities at the unit. Following this the company received go-ahead to manufacture the trains. Incidentally, coaches for Chennai metro will also come from the same facility.

"The Australian officials were satisfied with the manufacturing facility and the engineers involved in the process. The total cost of the Sydney project is likely to be 280 million euros and the coaches will be as per the specifications given by the Australian authorities," Alstom India (transport) managing director Bharat Salhotra told TOI.

12:20 pm: As Chennai joins the metro bandwagon, here's a snapshot into the amenities of the much-awaited service: Passenger capacity of each train: 1,200; Average speed of train: 35 kmph; Maximum operating speed: 80 km/hour; Duration of halt in each station: 30 seconds

1 AThe trains run on a fixed time table everyday. The timetable is prepared the previous day factoring in frequency, peak and non-peak hour etc. An announcement system is in place to inform passengers of an incoming train.
2 In case of an emergency, a passenger can get in touch with train operator. He communicates with the operation control centres who in turn intimate it to the next station controller to deboard the passenger.
3 Operation Control Centre (OCC) is the nerve centre where all trains of Chennai Metro Rail will be monitored.
4 Currently, there are seven people in OCC including chief controller and traffic controllers.
5 If the driver falls ill during train operation, the train automatically applies emergency brake and stops.
6 If there is a problem at the OCC, the control is transferred to backup stations like Ashok Nagar and Koyambedu.
7 The trains are currently tested on both manual and automatic mode.
8 Chennai Metro Rail trains are equipped to run without train operators. But for a while, they will run with train operators.
12:10 pm: CM Jayalalithaa inaugurates Chennai Metro Rail service from Alandur. The train will take 15 minutes to reach Koyambedu.

The Chief Minister inaugurated it by flagging it off via live video from the State Secretariat in Chennai.

“I am excited, my daughter’s dream of becoming a loco pilot of Metro Rail has come true,” Preethi’s father R Anbu told PTI.

He explained how his daughter was chasing her dream of becoming a loco pilot after the metro rail project began taking shape.

“She quit her first job, applied for a job in Chennai Metro rail, and she was the first woman to get selected,” he said with joy.
