Can it be downloaded from somewhere? These fonts already existed - Naksh and Nastaliq. Other than renaming, I wonder exactly they have done. Jang newspaper uses Urdu Nastaliq. Windows alreadys supports a simplified Naksh font that you can see on default if you go here:

Now close your browser and go to the previous link again. The difference would be that the previous font was more like Arabic, linear, Nastaleeq brings some fanciness into the writing common to Urdu.

Why do we even need a Urdu promotion council or whatever. Waste of money. Especially when its the Devanagri script that is widespread and not many have use for the right-to-left script.

How else will they fill visa applications to Pakistan? How else will they write letters to the editor in Pakistani newspapers?

Yes, but most Indians dont use purely Hindi words, rather Urdu words are used MUCH more in speaking..

Even songs which clearly have Urdu words in them and no trace of proper Hindi are still called "Hindi songs" whch baffles me.

You are free to call them "Urdu songs" .... if you so, please. By tradition, bollywood movies show the movie title in hindi, urdu(esentially, a different script.. but same pronunciation and word) and english.

The thing is Indians and Pakistanis don't need subtitles to understand bollywood movies.

We have many languages in India. As long as we are speaking in any Indian language (including Urdu), I don't have a problem with that.

We also have many songs which include Tamil, Marathi or even English words, but since they are from Hindi film industry, we call them Hindi songs.

That is debatable. The language has a similar construct - however Hindi employs sanskrit words and Urdu Employs words from a bunch of languages like Farsi, Arabic and a little from all regional languages of Pakistan... and Sanskrit words are kosher too - although uncommon and considered unsophisticated when spoken in a general setting - however in literary circles its normal.

The male and female of words is different in some cases too:

Urdu: Mera Imtihaan hai
Hindi: Meri Pariksha hai.
