India confirms order for IAF's Rafale deal with France

. . .
We had Vodhka in hand, unfortunately no opener !

Let wait until the bottle is opened this time..

. . .
Meanwhile get some second hand mirages and mig29s, I don't want to see Mig27s beyond 2017.

.
This would not be limited to 36 Fighters. :D

@Abingdonboy

If you look at our purchase history over last 20 years
Then you will see that India always places follow on order once initial contract is completed
I do expect a follow on order for 36-44 Rafales to be placed around year 2020, if only because the Ruskies screwed the PAKFA
Also I expect a third order for 36-48 Rafale M for INS Vishal if USA doesn't gives us the F35 C

.
I think there might be a follow up order of 20 or so but not 126. @Abingdonboy is only one which has hopes.
These 36 are initial orders that are coming through a G2G deal.
Followup orders will be a much larger quantity, with domestic production of Rafale in India (possibly Reliance) and this number could possibly be as large ad 150.

Deal still yet to be signed?
Formal signing is a Photo-op and will be when French President visits India as State Guest of Honor for Republic Day celebrations in 3 weeks from now.

What is MII?
Make In India.

Original MMRCA ended up in a stalemate and government realized that there was no way MMRCA deal could be signed. So the next best thing was to sign a short contract (basing the decision on technical findings of IAF in MMRCA trials).
Now when MII was promulgated, it gives a chance for Dassault to pick an Indian partner and manufacture these planes in India. There is no ToT involved but IAF gets what it wants, a cutting edge fighter in numbers in require (@Abingdonboy has already mentioned about attritional requirements).
This may look strange but the fact is government has been able to meet requirements of IAF without violating any legal procedure and develop private domestic player in the field.

@Vauban Do you watch Bollywood movies? The occasion reminds me of a scene from superstar Amitabh Bachchan's movie

(Translation: You must be ecstatic today!)
Dassault must be feeling same:partay:

Congrats Guys :-).

Whither LCA though??

I thought LCA was the Mig 21 replacement...

. .
Indeed.. LCA would replace mig-21 as a light weight category while Rafale would replace Mig-27 in future Jaguars and would give IAF new capabilities, especially for SEAD ops
Jags are schedule to be phased out by 2035 by then we might get both FGFA and AMCA

Rafale is required to replace Mig27
IAF has said that it needs 80 Rafale

To replace 79 Mig27
