India and Pakistan need to reunite like Germany and Vietnam: Markandey Katju

. . .
When did I ever say Indians and Pakistanis are exactly alike? I simply think it is funny how he thinks Indians are exactly like Lankans and Bdeshis but have nothing in common with Pakistanis. And it is not just Punjabis , India also has the largest populations of Rajputs, Jatts, and gujjars in the world. Not to mention that many tribes in Gujarat and Rajasthan(mainly in the Kutch, Saurashtra, and Marwar regins) are similar to some tribes in SIndh. And yes I was trolling that guy because he was obviously trolling himself. It looks like I got a pretty decent reaction out of him, so I was successful. Sorry about that, I do not usually troll.
obviously people are closest to their neighbours, Pakistanis are closest to Indians and Afghans , two neighbours we share the most with . But this doesnt mean that Pakistan dont have an identity of its own. Btw latest ethnic breakdown on Pakistan as of 2017, I dont consider any major ethnic group of Pakistan as minority.

I think you misunderstood me. I never said Indians and Pakistanis are identical. If we were we would not have separated. we have our similarities, but we are also very different. And I guess in the end our differences outweighed whatever similarities we share, which is all that matters right now.

Ooops.....
Wait what?

That's very far from true, historically.

The separation was due to the aspirations of upwardly mobile Muslims of the UP and Bombay, who saw their prospects of advancement blocked by a stifling majority that had started educating themselves in English generations earlier. This need was articulated in a completely different way by a gentleman who suggested that these aspirations be protected by creating a Muslim homeland in the north-west. That was realised by the greatest legal mind of his generation, who, in self-imposed exile, accepted a brief from his co-religionists and took leadership of a political party with the specific task of getting a Muslim homeland, not an independent nation, but a space where Muslim aspirations could be fulfilled without being stifled under the majority. Finally, the realisation took the shape of the separation of areas and provinces and ethnicities that had never, until two years before the event, offered any electoral support to the party that took them to independence.

The differences that you speak of were picked out to distinguish the newly independent nation from the one from which it had separated, and constitute part of an ongoing effort to refine a national narrative. They were not the reasons for the split, they were the post-facto justifications.

Former Judge, Supreme Court of India Markandey Katju said that Aman ki Asha is living in a fool’s paradise and deceiving people. The campaign launched jointly by two large media houses, the Jang Group of Pakistan and the Times of India Group of India aims at improving relations between India and Pakistan, and help secure peace in the region. It runs a portal amankiasha.com. Former judge twitted, ‘Aman ki Asha is living in a fool’s paradise and deceiving people.’

In his article written for Pakistani Stories, Katju writes, “While ostensibly its (Aman ki Asha) aim seems laudable, and indeed it has done some good work by promoting some people to people contact between Indians and Pakistanis, which helps to some extent in dispelling the notion that people living on the other side of the border are devils, nevertheless, in my opinion, its basic approach is flawed, and in fact it serves to deceive people.”

He said “India and Pakistan (and Bangladesh) are really one country, sharing the same culture, and were one since Mughal times. Partition in 1947 was a historical British swindle, on the basis of the bogus two nation theory ( that Hindus and Muslims are two separate nations ), which was the culmination of the nefarious British divide and rule policy of making Hindus and Muslims fight each other.” He added, “Pakistan is a fake, artificial country.”

Stressing the need to reunite India and Pakistan, Katju asserted, “It is really part of India, only temporarily separated, but is bound to be reunited with it, like West and East Germany or North and South Vietnam (though that will take time because those who divided us will not let us easily reunite.)

NO, Thank You!

I saw what you did. Ethnicity <> language.
Census in Pakistan works along linguistic lines , it is not the most accurate way to calculate ethnicity but it is easiest and simplest.
There are many Pashtuns, Balochs and Kashmiris that are counted as Seraiki and Punjabis because they settled in Punjab and adopted Punjabi/Seraiki as language. Similarly there are Sindhis in Balochistan that speak Balochi now. There are lot of elite Indian Muslims migrated to Pakistan on partition and claim exotic/foreign ancestries but they all counted as Urdu speaker and make roughly 7% of Population. Simalarly Hindkos are mixture of Pashtuns and Punjabis who speak a new language now.
