Huawei P20 (899Euros) Released: 40 MP RGB camera, AI-driven photography system, and 4000 mAh battery

I'm in iOS user so this phone has no appeal for me. In the end, it's still an Android phone and will appeal to those who currently use it. If Huawei, or any Chinese phone company, for that matter, really want to take on iOS, it should create its own OS on its own hardware.

creating your own os is easy, creating a ecosystem is stupidly hard and not worth the effort. failure of windows mobile is supportive of this. even though its a bloody solid os

I've got an S9+, once you get to the high end phones, there is really not much to ask for and the differences are minor between 900$ territory phones. I've seen that the P-20's photos look really processed compared to the Pixel 2XL, S9+ and iPhone X though. 40 MP allow you to capture a lot of detail but in return shutter speed is slow, this is why in default the resolution in the P-20 Pro is set to 10 MP.

40MP on a 5x Optical zoom is basically wasted. It allow you to capture a long shot with extremely high detail, however, in a close up, you will smudge the pixel as it trying to expand to fit the 5x optical zoom. That is the reason why even top end DSLR, at most you get 30 MP and that goes a long way with with 650mm telescopic lens.

Consider most phone-photo uses today is close up (Selfie and Normal Portrait) I would say P20 having 40MP camera is overkill, because if I really into photography, I would probably buy a decent DSLR for it, and having to pay more than a S9+ for P20 Pro just because it can take better picture is simply not worth it.

DSLR is to heavy and bulky. User want a jack of all trade.

5x optical zoom
5x Hybrid zoom, Hybrid means quality lost is minimal, it has a 3x optical zoom, optical zoom is lossless.

I don't know, there's something to it in having everything you want in a phone that could fit in your pocket, on high end phones the picture quality is way beyond acceptable and it is reaching DSLR territory.

Here is an example, I took this shot right now from my phone, I personally can't differentiate this from a picture taken by a DSLR, maybe only if I had the two pictures side by side and I inspected both of them closely.
It's also easier to upload, this picture was uploaded automatically to the Google Cloud and I downloaded it here over the PC, and sent this image. With a DSLR you would have to take the picture, get the SD card out, find an adapter if you don't have it, and transfer it to your computer, and repeat the same thing with every device you want it transferred to.

That is because you are taking a long shot. If you try to use a phone to shoot a Car or a Woman close up, you will see the different.

You cannot take the maximum advantage of the 40 MP canvas size if you are only allow 5x optical zoom (well, even less so with 5x Hybrid zoom) that is because you can implicate a 5x time megapixel to the 40MP canvas and if that is a pixel rich photo (a far shot which you capture more scene than detail) then yes, because the optical distinction is huge (from one road to an other, from one tree to an other and so on) but if you are taking a close up on a woman in their face, which would mean the difference is subtle. Because you are talking about the same face of the same woman.

It's very hard to talk to you about it, I may try to take a comparison picture and using my phones and DSLR tomorrow (because it is nigh here I cannot demonstrate the different at night...)

Plus most DSLR today have wifi-connection you don't need to take out anything.

You miss my point, my point is, if I am, for whatever reason in need a 40MP camera, I would use a DSLR because to have that degree of clarity, you have to be a professional photographer, you don't need 40MP pixel size if you are a normal mobile phone user. That is my point.

Theres more to high megapixel sensors than zoom, in this case the sensor had quad bayer structure that bins 4 pixel as output. Making it 10MP in most cicumstances. The benefit is effective increase in pixel size and much higher dynamic range by varying exposure within each binned array

Pixel Binning only at most half the signal to noise ratio (if it is a 4 pixel bin or 2x2) you lose the overall quality for signal to noise gain, so effectively, your picture will be the same (more or less than same) between a 20MP and 40MP.

In this case, the bin array will not help the exposure because of the low zoom number. Because at most you are at 3x before signal started to lost to noise. If it was a 10X or 15x camera, then yeah, it would compensate because you would not lose to noise after 10x or 15x zoom.

Most case people uses pixel binning is because they want a faster signal read out time. Not because of its enhanced image quality

DxOMark is the trusted industry standard for camera and lens image quality measurements. DxOMark engineers capture and evaluate over 1500 test images and more than 2 hours of video both in controlled lab environments and in natural indoor and outdoor scenes for their smartphone camera testing.

Conclusion: Game changer. Huawei has skipped one or two generations. All according to DxOMark.

Everyone is going to buy a phone anyway. Why wouldn't you want the phone with the best camera?

Really? I guess I missed out on DSLRs lately, I only got one from 2011

Yeah, you're probably right, but my phone satisfies me way more than a good DSLR will, way less of a bulky process, you can instantly upload everything to the social media.

Sure, good night. Or it's morning now over there

Photography is a very personalized subject.
I don't know how they gave the P-20 Pro such a high video score, considering the fact that it has no stabilization in 4k 30fps, and doesn't even have a 4k 60fps mode.
You can't really go wrong with today's flagship phones

Yeah, most DSLR (Even entry level DSLR) have Wifi and NFC connectivity now, I just got a EOS 80D for $1500 (When it was on special) which is about $1200 USD and it have wifi and I can connect to my phone or other camera with it, and it is a must have for high end (like 5D gen 4) DSLR

Well, for me, I did professional photography, therefore I shoot in RAW and that is the reason I must use DSLR, and that is the reason why phone can never replace DSLR for me ...

Sure, good night. Or it's morning now over there

As I type, its 3:39 am here.

Good night

The problem is P20 is more expensive than a Samsung S9+ ($100 more if the RRP is correct) and everything in a P20 Pro is inferior than Samsung S9+ apart from the camera. The would become why you want to pay the extra $100 for P20 Pro instead of Samsung?

People buy Samsung because they are versatile and they are upgradable easily, people willing to pay 3 to 400 more for IPhone because of the IOS, but if the only selling point of P20 Pro is because they score 10 point more of a nice enough camera on a S9+? That would not worth it. Considering S9+ camera is already very nice and you probably not going to use all the potential to begin with. Most photography nuts like me would much rather shoot with DSLR than camera, considering you cannot photoshop your photo much straight from the phone.

I would rather Huawei have their flagship phone cheaper than Samsung, then I think they are about as competitive as Samsung, maybe they can take a chunk of sale out of Galaxy, but in this case, you are expecting to fork out $1499 for a P20 Pro only because its camera? Many people would simply go and buy a Samsung S9+ for $1350
