Homes of Christians burnt

No SCoP should stay out of it because this is the job of the Punjab govt. and the Punjab Police.

Pressure should be on the Punjab Police to capture these culprits and Punjab govt. should make sure that their losses are compensated.

Punjab government and police are not doing their job hence the continued violence, so this incident is certainly something for CJ to look into as well as the conduct of Punjab government and police.

Last but not least, a proper investigation should be conducted to verify the blasphemy claim and punish the person(s) responsible for it.

What are you talking about? No such incident occurred. Just an excuse to persecute minorities.

It's interesting that neither PPP nor PML-N/Q nor PTI have been active in doing away with the eddifice of Islamist laws put into place during the Zia ul Haq regime - Most interesting of all is that the current Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, while he has acted on behalf of Islamist radicals arrested by security forces, has not ONCE, not once, acted against the outrages of the Islamists, why do you suppose that is?

Then people should come out in streets to demand justice. Punjab govt. is an elected govt. and it should be pressurized by the people who elected it.

How do you know? This has to be investigated so that truth can come out. If people are guilty then they should be punished by the law. If not then we need to know who was behind all this and what was the purpoose.

They love popularity and lack leaderrship qualities so they do whatever the emotional masses demand of them.

I am sure once xtians are done being burnt alive they would think about it.

Because there is no evidence of it and law minister of Punjab says so.

It is very much regrettable. Pakistan is a peaceful country and Islam is the religion of peace. It does not allow violence. I appreciate Farahnaz Ispahani’s statement in this regard. It is very appropriate response by media advisor to President. She is very right that no one will be allowed to take law into own hands and such elements should be dealt with iron hands.

Get the scum that did this crime and hang the lot of them:angry:

I think the minorities in pakistan make up 5% of the population but we need to give then say 20% of the seats in parliment to keep things in check.

their lot of hue and cry on orissa and now what all you say.....

Why are you gloating over the murder of 7 innocent people?

It is terrible to say it but, hopefully, some good can come of this crisis.

Just like the swat video of Taliban atrocities mobilized the nation to eliminate TTP, so maybe this incident can help galvanize public support to get rid of these idiot blasphemy laws.

We can even hope, although I doubt it, that it may improve the law and order situation in general.

All Pakistanis, no matter their religion, ethnicity, or class, are born equal, and should be seen as equal under the law.

The incident is truely sad and I hope the culprits are brought to book soon.

However, what moves me most is the almost univocal condemnation by the forum members, specially the pakistani members. I feel so proud to be part of this forum!!

^^^^^We are just trying to use our free soul to see an event, we are not blind folded by emotions. And I hope, Pakistanis, as a whole, follow some reasoning to react on any matter. This incident has proved that educated Pakistanis use rationale in expressing their thoughts. Proud to be Pakistan.

Some members here say that it is due to the blasphemy laws, I partially agree with this. Another thing, that should be considered is that papacy in terms of Mullah Network has very deep roots in our society. Mullahs exploit ignorant people for their vested interests and many a times some criminals play as the master minds. If the blasphemy laws are suspended but Mullahs are allowed to play their dirty religious exploitation, then we can't expect any good in future. We can avoid these sort of tragedies in future by educating the masses that to love religion doesn't mean that any person has any kind of freedom to take law in his/her hands.

Qur'an says;

Lakum deeenokum wa liya deen

Your deen is for you and theirs is for them.

Islam is just live and let live. It is peace, not anarchy.

Troops move in after Pakistan riots

Christians and human rights activists in Lahore protested against the killings [AFP]

Pakistan has deployed paramilitary troops on the streets of Gorja, a day after eight Christians were killed in religious riots in the eastern city.

Troops patrolled the city on Sunday following the violence by Muslim-led mobs after rumours circulated that a Quran had been defaced.

Hundreds of Muslims burned and looted Christian homes in the city and six people, including a child and four women, were killed after shooting broke out.

Two men died later in hospital from gun shot wounds sustained in the riots.

Officials suggested the disturbances, which began on Thursday but calmed before flaring again Saturday, had been instigated by members of a banned Muslim organisation.

Rehman Malik, Pakistan's interior minister, said: "Usually, Muslims and Christians live together peacefully. There have been some miscreants involved in this incident. We are investigating that."

'Anti-state elements'

Mohammed Saleem, a correspondent with Pakistan's Dawn newspaper, told Al Jazeera: "It's yet to be ascertained what caused the incident, but the government officials say that ... they have taken into custody two dozen people associated with the banned organisation of Sipah-e-Sahaba."

The outlawed group has in the past been accused of attacking security forces.

Rana Sanaullah, the provincial minister for law, who is also responsible for security matters of Punjab, condemned the attack and said that a preliminary investigation had showed there had been no desecration of the Quran.

"It was just a rumour which was exploited by anti-state elements to create chaos," he said.

The riots prompted angry protests by Christians and human rights activists in Lahore, the Punjab's provincial capital.

Rights groups accused the police of failing to respond quickly enough to prevent the violence from escalating.

Pakistan is a predominantly Muslim nation and religious minorities, including Christians, account for roughly four per cent of the 170 million population.

Muslims and minorities largely live in harmony but there have been periodic attacks on Christian targets in Pakistan.
