The Israeli Defence Forces have confirmed that Hamas has taken Israeli civilians and soldiers as hostages to Gaza.
Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, an IDF spokesperson, did not say how many people had been taken hostage when he addressed reporters. Hostages in the Gaza Strip could complicate both possible plans for a ground incursion and the intensity of air strikes on the densely populated area.
“All of the terrorists who entered Israeli territory will be killed — whether in battle or during their withdrawal,” Hagari said.
One of the goals of today’s attack, senior Hamas leader Basem Naim told The Telegraph, was to free the 5,000 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. Asked if this is why Hamas took hostages, he replied, “This is the rule of war.”
According to Naim, the head of the political and international relations department for Hamas in Gaza, there are 5,000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons. His comments line up with those of Hamas’ deputy chief Saleh al-Arouri, who told Al Jazeera today that they have taken “big numbers” of hostages, enough to free all Palestinian detainees.
Throughout the day videos have emerged of elderly women being escorted away from their homes by Hamas militants and reports of Israeli soldiers being taken as “prisoners of war”.
Mr Hagari said that there are still 22 locations of ongoing fighting in southern Israel.
“We are on the verge of a great victory and a clear conquest on the Gaza front,” Haniyeh said in a speech broadcast on Hamas-run Al-Aqsa television.
“Enough is enough, the cycle of intifadas (uprisings) and revolutions in the battle to liberate our land and our prisoners languishing in occupation prisons must be completed.”

Israel’s ambassador to France has admitted the country was not “sufficiently prepared” for the attack launched by Hamas, pointing to a failure of the intelligence services.
“Following this surprise, we were not sufficiently prepared for it, we could even say barely prepared,” ambassador Raphael Morav said in an interview with France’s Europe 1 radio.
Asked about a possible failure of the Israeli intelligence services, the Israeli diplomat replied: “Certainly, certainly, yes... because normally we should have been prepared”.
“Lessons will have to be learned,” he added.

Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas, said the terrorist group was on the “verge of a great victory”.
“We are on the verge of a great victory and a clear conquest on the Gaza front,” Haniyeh said in a speech broadcast on Hamas-run Al-Aqsa television.
“Enough is enough, the cycle of intifadas and revolutions in the battle to liberate our land and our prisoners languishing in occupation prisons must be completed.”
He added that the attack had started in Gaza but would stretch across Israel to the West Bank and reclaim territory Palestine had lost since 1948.

Israel cannot protect you: Hamas warns against normalisation with Palestine's occupiers
In a speech this evening, the leader of Hamas’ political bureau, warned fellow Arab countries against normalising with its occupiers.
“We say to all countries, including our Arab brothers, that this entity, which cannot protect itself in the face of resistors, cannot provide you with any protection,” he said.
“All the normalisation agreements that you signed with that entity cannot resolve this (Palestinian) conflict.”
Haniyeh also said armed Palestinian factions intend to expand the ongoing battle in Gaza to the West Bank and Jerusalem. “The battle moved into the heart of the ‘zionist entity’” he said.
In 2020 Israel reached normalisation with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, and upgraded ties with Morocco and Sudan, despite talks over Palestinian statehood being frozen for years.
Saudi Arabia, one of the strongest supporters of the Palestinian cause, is currently in negotiations over a US-brokered normalisation deal with Israel which some Palestinian factions have hit out over.

Hamas committed 'cold-blooded murder', says Israeli President
Israel’s president has said that “we saw the true face of Hamas” on Saturday in an address to the nation.
“Today we saw the true face of Hamas,” said Isaac Herzog. “A terrorist army whose only goal is the cold-blooded murder of innocent men, women, and children. Supported and directed by their proxy commanders in Iran, they carried out an unprovoked, heinous attack against the Jewish state on a Jewish holy day. Innocent civilians were massacred and wounded, and many are still under attack.
“The State of Israel will take all measures necessary to eliminate this clear and immediate danger to our citizens. Israel will overcome in the face of all challenges.
“I call upon the family of nations - this war waged against us marks a line in the sand. Now is the time to hear clear, unequivocal condemnation of Hamas, its allies, and its backers in Iran. Now is the time to stand firm with Israel in support of its just and moral battle in the face of an abhorrent enemy.”

“The terrorist organization Hamas places its military assets in the heart of the civilian population in the Gaza Strip,” the IDF continued.

UNIFIL 'enhances' its presence in southern Lebanon
UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping force on the border between Lebanon and Israel, has said it has adapted and enhanced its presence along the border to avoid escalation.
“UNIFIL is closely monitoring the unfolding dramatic events in Israel. Peacekeepers are present along the Blue Line to maintain stability and help avoid escalation,” the force said in a statement.
“We have also adapted and enhanced our presence throughout our area of operations, including counter rocket-launching operations.”
“Our leadership has been in constant contact with the parties since the events began to ensure effective coordination and avoid misunderstandings.”
Andrea Tenenti, UNIFIL’s spokesperson in Lebanon, further explained to The Telegraph: “Our troops have radars capable of partially monitoring the launching of rockets. We call it ‘counter rocket launching operations’. We can potentially detect the launching of rockets.”
It is always in use, he said, but as of today they are increasing their monitoring capabilities.
An IDF spokesman said of a potential incursion from Lebanon that a few people on motorcycles had gotten close to the border but were driven away with gunfire. There have been no other imminent indications of Hizbollah opening another front to the new conflict, though the possibility cannot be ruled out.

British-Israeli families describe the day's horror
A British-Israeli family including a ten-day-old baby were trapped in a safe room surrounded by the remains of their house after Hamas terrorists attacked their village,
Neil Johnston and Keith Perry write.
The family spent nine hours in the safe room after they first heard rocket fire at 6am on Saturday morning in the community of Nirim, one and a half miles from the Gaza border.
Relatives in the UK said their house and cars were burnt to the ground, with only the safe room still standing.
They were also forced to hold their newborn baby Kai to the ceiling as smoke filled the room.
They were finally freed just before 3pm local time when Israeli Defence Forces arrived and moved them to a bomb shelter.

'Normalisation' will not create stability or security for anyone, Hamas tells The Telegraph
Basem Naim, the head of the political and international relations department for Hamas in Gaza, has told The Telegraph that any country’s normalisation with Israel will not lead to stability in the conflict.
“Normalisation with any party will not create any stability or security for anyone,” he said, likely referring to ongoing negotiations over a potential normalisation deal between Saudi Arabia and Israel,
Abbie Cheeseman writes.
“We are people under occupation, therefore we have the right to resist, we have the right to live free, we have the right to return to our homes,” he said.
One of the goals of today’s attack, he said, was to release Palestinian prisoners from jail. Asked if this is why Hamas has taken hostages, he replied, “This is the rule of war.”
His comments line up with those of Hamas’ deputy chief Saleh al-Arouri, who told Al Jazeera today that they have enough hostages to free all Palestinian detainees. Naim told The Telegraph that more than 5,000 Palestinian prisoners are still in jail.
There is precedent. In 2011 Israel secured the release of its soldier Gilad Shalit by freeing more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.

A British woman in Israel describes her family as 'hiding in bushes' from Hamas
A British woman now living in Israel has described how her family have been “hiding in bushes” after Hamas terrorists torched their home in an attempt to smoke them out,
Keith Perry writes.
Emma Segev, 50, originally from Eastbourne, says a kibbutz called Beeri where her in-laws live was taken over by gunmen from the militant group. She had been speaking to her relatives during their ordeal but has now lost touch with them.
Speaking from her home near Ashkelon where she has lived for 20 years, she said: “We are desperately waiting for the news of my sister in law and her four kids.
“They told us that Hamas were outside their door and they could hear Arabic and gunshots, but now things have gone silent.
“Last thing we heard, their house was on fire. They were tipped off about the attack and hid in their panic room but Hamas set their house alight. Eventually the heat in the room got so intense they thought they would be burned alive and fled. I don’t know how they got out but they are hiding in the bushes.
“Two elderly ladies have been kidnapped as well as teenagers who were attending a rave and were taken hostage. Hamas took six teenagers back to Gaza and we think Hamas are going to hold them to ransom.”
“My friend in Sderot says she can see terrorists right now walking past their home. She is petrified that they will come in, she told me that people are coming in and out of Gaza and doing whatever they want. People are having to defend themselves.

There is no distinction between civilians and militants yet.
Estimates in Palestinian media put the number of injured as high as 1,600.

Multiple dead and wounded in air strikes on Gaza Strip
There are reports of multiple dead and wounded who are being transported to hospital after Israeli air strikes hit the Gaza Strip.
It is not immediately clear if civilians are among the casualties. Associated Press reporters witnessed the funerals of 15 people who were killed and saw another eight bodies arrive at a local hospital.
It’s worth noting that Israel normally has a much higher civilian casualty rate with its air strikes when bombing occupied Palestine than it does in its other theatres, such as Syria. During the last war in May 2021, civilian harm watchdog Airwars documented between 151 and 191 likely civilian casualties in just 10 days.
It is not immediately clear how the reports of Israeli hostages being taken to Gaza will impact the intensity of the air campaign.

As Netanyahu convenes the security cabinet meeting he has called on citizens of Israel to unite.

“The third goal is to fortify other arenas so that no one makes the mistake of joining this war,” Netanyahu says.
“We are at war, in war you have to keep calm. I call on all citizens of Israel to unite in order to achieve our highest goal – victory in the war,” the PM said.

Egypt warns of 'grave consequences' from escalation of tenions
Egypt warned of “grave consequences” from an escalation in tensions between Israel and the Palestinians in a statement from the foreign ministry.
It called for “exercising maximum restraint and avoiding exposing civilians to further danger”.
Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri also held a call with European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell to discuss developments between Israel and the Palestinians since Friday evening.
The attack came a day after the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur war where a surprise attack on two fronts by Syrian tank columns and Egyptian brigades in 1973 caught Israeli forces off guard on the holiest day of the Jewish year.
The Egyptian foreign ministry in a second statement said that they are making contacts to try and “contain the tense situation between the Palestinian and Israeli sides.”

Lord Wolfson, a Conservative peer and former minister, tweeted in response: “The Government condemns. Labour condemns. The Liberal Democrats are ‘concerned’. Shameful.

Netanyahu's statement in full
Citizens of Israel, we are at war, not in an operation or in rounds, but at war.
This morning, Hamas launched a murderous surprise attack against the State of Israel and its citizens. We have been in this since the early morning hours.
I convened the heads of the security establishment and ordered – first of all – to clear out the communities that have been infiltrated by terrorists. This currently is being carried out.
At the same time, I have ordered an extensive mobilization of reserves and that we return fire of a magnitude that the enemy has not known. The enemy will pay an unprecedented price.
In the meantime, I call on the citizens of Israel to strictly adhere to the directives of the IDF and Home Front Command.
We are at war and we will win it.
