Keir Starmer Voices Support for Palestinian Return to Gaza Amid Trump's Proposal

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has firmly stated that Palestinians "must be allowed to return home" and rebuild Gaza, following President Donald Trump's suggestion of a US takeover of the region. This stance marks a notable divergence from Trump's vision and aligns the UK with other allies, such as Saudi Arabia and France, who are advocating for a two-state solution.

Starmer's Response to Trump's Proposal
During Prime Minister's Questions, Starmer addressed concerns raised by Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey, who described Trump's remarks as "dangerous" and inquired whether the Prime Minister would communicate these concerns to the White House. Starmer emphasized the importance of sustaining the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, ensuring the release of remaining hostages, and facilitating the delivery of urgently needed aid to Gaza

The Importance of Rebuilding Gaza
Starmer conveyed that images of Palestinians returning to their communities in Gaza deeply affected him and highlighted the necessity of allowing them to rebuild their homes and lives. He affirmed that the UK should support Palestinians in this rebuilding process as they progress toward a two-state solution.

UK's Commitment to a Two-State Solution
Starmer's remarks echo those of Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who emphasized the UK's belief in the necessity of two states, with Palestinians thriving in their own territories in Gaza and the West Bank. The UK government intends to engage with President Trump and his team, reaffirming that "there must be a situation in which Palestinians can return home".

The Ceasefire and Humanitarian Aid
Starmer's statement on the Israel-Hamas ceasefire in January 2025, stated that the ceasefire must allow for a huge surge in humanitarian aid to end the suffering in Gaza. He also stated that those displaced in this conflict need assurances of their right to return home and rebuild their lives, and that Gaza cannot be left as a refugee camp.

Global Condemnation
Starmer joined the global condemnation of Donald Trump’s plans for a US takeover of the Gaza Strip, insisting Palestinians “must be allowed home”. France also rejected the US president’s plan, saying the future of Gaza lies in “a future Palestinian state” and not under the control of “a third country”.
