Don't worry, Musharaff unarmed majority of our population and made guns illegal. The new generation doesn't even know the names of guns much less know how to hold it. I used to go to my village and shoot for fun, now the army will charge me with terrorism if i do that.

We don't like Mushy. But we do give him the respect for yo a guy who was not a radical Islamist and a General.

I remember in the old days you had arb e this and that for months and years.

Bombs everywhere. Mosques. Schools. Markets.

Bus massacres. Church and shrines massacres.

Israel has not been able to find peaceful settlement with its opponents which makes Israel feel threatened all the time, hence the compulsory military service.

But let's take another country - Turkey, which is not under imminent threat of invasion by some other country yet Turkey has compulsory military service. Just a few days ago, in one thread about Turkey and Syria some Turkish members were saying that in Turkey, military service is a means to earn social respect. I told a Turkish member that the Turkish political is certainly not something that is worth copying. Unlike say socialist Cuba.

To come to India. Neither is India under pressure like Israel nor is India's political system something to be that proud of. Let us first bring a revolutionary change to India's political system which would then make it worthwhile for every able citizen to defend the country. Till then, India's volunteer-based is enough of a defensive force I would say. What do you think ??

It is not about Israel or turkey only.we do have other countries say Finland where again it is compulsion to serve armed force.I believe voluntarily it should be permissible in India..
