Islamabad United seal fifth straight win with 7-wicket victory over Multan Sultans

Usman's half century lifted Sultans to 169, but Gous's unbeaten 80 powered United to victory with 17 balls to spare.

Andries Gous produced a blistering unbeaten 80 off 45 balls to steer Islamabad United to their fifth consecutive win over Multan Sultans in the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) on Wednesday, chasing down a target of 171 with 17 balls to spare.

Islamabad’s chase began in explosive fashion as Sahibzada Farhan, riding on his fine form, smashed 22 off 13 deliveries to give the innings early impetus. However, his stay was short-lived as Ubaid Shah removed him, caught behind, to give Multan a much-needed breakthrough.

Farhan’s dismissal brought Colin Munro to the crease, and what followed was a match-defining partnership between the New Zealander and wicketkeeper-batter Andries Gous. The pair added 81 runs in a crucial stand, dismantling the Sultans’ bowling attack with clean and calculated hitting.

Gous was the standout performer of the night, smashing six fours and five sixes en route to his unbeaten 80 with Munro, equally aggressive, chipped in with a quick-fire 45 off 28 balls, featuring five boundaries and two sixes before falling to Michael Bracewell.

With the target in sight, Mohammad Nawaz added a handy 21 off 19 before being dismissed by Chris Jordan as Islamabad cruised home at 171 for 3 in 17.1 overs, registering a comfortable seven-wicket victory.

Earlier, Multan Sultans opted to bat first after winning the toss and Openers Yasir Khan and captain Mohammad Rizwan laid a strong foundation with a 51-run partnership for the first wicket. Yasir played a brisk knock, scoring 29 off 17 balls before being caught by a substitute off Mohammad Nawaz.

Skipper Rizwan held one end with a more measured approach, contributing 36 off 37 deliveries, including three boundaries, before falling to Shadab Khan.

The innings gained momentum through Usman Khan, who top-scored with an impressive 61 off 40 balls, striking four fours and four, however, his run was cut short by a sharp piece of fielding, resulting in a run-out.

New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell and Iftikhar Ahmed unable to capitalize on early start, falling to Meredith and Jason Holder, respectively.

In the final overs Kamran Ghulam provided a late flourish, with Kamran striking a six and a four to lift the score to 168/5.

Babar Azam's unbeaten 56 put Peshawar Zalmi on course • PSL

Peshawar Zalmi 133 for 3 (Babar 56*, Talat 51*, Shaheen 2-22) beat Lahore Qalandars 129 (Raza 52, Joseph 3-15, Talat 2-18, Wood 2-25) by seven wickets

Lahore Qalandars fell flat in their first game at home as a half-century from Babar Azam helped Peshawar Zalmi sweep to victory at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Alzarri Joseph and Luke Wood cut the Qalandars top and middle order to ribbons, reducing them to 21 for 4. It was only a rearguard half-century from Sikandar Raza that got the Qalandars to a somewhat competitive total, his 37-ball 52 alongside stodgy resistance from the lower order carrying Shaheen Afridi's men to 129.

It was just enough to give Zalmi a brief scare in the powerplay against an on-song Shaheen and Haris Rauf, who reduced the visitors to 40 for 3. But an unbroken 93-run partnership between Babar and Hussain Talat allayed any fears of a collapse. With run rate never an issue, Zalmi eased to their target with 20 balls to spare.

Babar won the toss and opted to put the Qalandars in, his bowlers backing him up right from the outset. A pair of boundaries from Fakhar Zaman offered the falsest of dawns before Zalmi stormed through. Four wickets fell for six runs as Fakhar, Asif Ali, Abdullah Shafique and Daryl Mitchell all departed before breakout star Ali Raza drew an edge from Sam Billings that Babar comfortably held on to.

Shaheen came out and struck a couple of sixes, but never looked like he had staying power, and was gone off the tenth ball he faced. It was left to birthday boy Raza to manage the innings as he balanced farming the strike with taking risks, gently leading the Qalandars out of the mire. He targeted Arif Yaqoob and Mitchell Owen, with the Australian conceding 17 in the 17th over to move the Qalandars beyond 120, and Raza past his half-century with three overs to go.

An excellent final over from Joseph kept Qalandars to just two in the 18th, before Ali Raza's 19th starved Raza of the strike. Frustrated, the Zimbabwean fell off the first ball of the 20th, and the Qalandars were bowled out two balls later.

Alzarri Joseph took a three-wicket haul•PSL

With the crowd filling up - it is always fuller at the Gaddafi than anywhere else in Pakistan - the home side's new-ball pair offered a glimmer of hope, Shaheen and Haris removing Saim Ayub and Tom Kohler-Cadmore within the first nine deliveries. Haris's phenomenally intense first over threatened to blast through more batters, with Babar and Mohammad Haris looking vulnerable. But the pair held on, and with Rauf mysteriously taken out of the attack after one over, settled.
He would return for the final over of the Powerplay and once more went after Babar.

A bouncer Babar couldn't control flew over the keeper for six before he was struck on the pads with the umpire raising his finger, only for DRS to save the Zalmi captain on height by inches. Babar followed up with a lovely drive to third for four, and on that dime, the fortunes of the game began to tilt.

Talat isn't a powerful striker, but had the space and time to ease into his innings with no scoreboard pressure. The Qalandars struggled to keep up the intensity of the Powerplay and Babar's mastery in low chases began to overpower them. He found the odd boundary while expertly negotiating Rishad Hossain on a slightly turning pitch, and at some indefinable point, the chase became a cakewalk.

Babar, getting through a rerun of the innings he has played countless times, eased to a 37-ball half-century with a flick off Asif Afridi. Talat applied the icing on the cake with a pair of boundaries off Rauf who had long lost his potency, bringing up the victory, as well as his own half-century, as Zalmi moved up to fourth, ahead of the Qalandars on net run rate. Zalmi may well be resurrecting their campaign at the Qalandars' expense.

Quetta Gladiators secured a thrilling five-run victory over Karachi Kings in a closely contested Pakistan Super League (PSL) encounter, played at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on Friday.

Batting first, Quetta Gladiators were bowled out for 142 in 19.3 overs. Captain Saud Shakeel was the first to fall, scoring just 6, while the top order crumbled under pressure from a fiery opening spell by Hasan Ali, who picked up 3 wickets for 33 runs.

Finn Allen fell for a golden duck, and Rilee Rossouw (10) also failed to capitalise on a promising start.

Wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis provided some resistance with a quick 36 off 22 balls, while Faheem Ashraf lifted the innings late with an aggressive 43 from 27 deliveries, striking four boundaries and three sixes. Hasan Nawaz also contributed with a 34-ball 35.
Karachi Kings’ bowlers shared the spoils, with Mir Hamza impressing with 2 for 24 in his four overs, and Abbas Afridi chipping in with two key wickets.

In response, Karachi Kings fell short despite a flying start from Tim Seifert, who smashed 47 off 26 balls. James Vince supported him with a steady 30, but the middle order faltered under tight bowling pressure from Quetta.

Mohammad Wasim and Mohammad Amir each claimed two wickets, while Abrar Ahmed was economical, conceding only 15 runs in his full quota and picking up one wicket. Khurram Shahzad also impressed with 2 for 31, including the key scalps of Shan Masood and Abbas Afridi.

Hasan Ali fought valiantly at the death, scoring an unbeaten 24 off 13 balls, but Karachi Kings were restricted to 137 for 8 in their 20 overs — five runs shy of the target.

Quetta Gladiators 90 for 0 (Allen 45*, Shakeel 42*) beat Multan Sultans 89 (Rizwan 44*, Shahzad 4-23, Faheem 2-18, Ashraf 2-21) by 10 wickets

Quetta Gladiators pushed Multan Sultans to the brink of elimination after running away to a record-breaking 10-wicket victory in Lahore. After bowling the Sultans out for 89, the Gladiators took just 6.5 overs to gun it down, with openers Finn Allen and Saud Shakeel making it - by 3.1 overs - the largest margin of victory by balls remaining in PSL history. The last 82 runs of the chase came off just 29 balls, leaving Multan nursing their sixth defeat in seven matches as well as a net run rate of -2.355. With this result, the 2021 champions' fate looks all but sealed.

Mohammad Rizwan carried his bat, but he wasn't really going anywhere with it for all the carnage happening at the other end. Khurram Shahzad ripped through the top order, taking four new-ball wickets in his first 11 balls, leaving the Sultans reeling at 20 for 4. He made full use of the early swing, combining it with consistent high-pace bowling. The full delivery got rid of Yasir Khan and Curtis Campher, who saw the ball nip back into him sharply to leave him plumb in front. In between, Usman Khan holed out playing a low-percentage heave, while Kamran Ghulam was squared up by an away-swinger that he nicked to slip.

There would be no real recovery as the other Gladiators bowlers carried on the momentum. Faheem Ashraf punctured the middle order with the quickfire wickets of Iftikhar Ahmed and Michael Bracewell. Mohammad Wasim picked up the final two as, to add insult to injury, Sultans' clouded thinking contributed to self-inflicted damage. Rizwan, in an attempt to farm the strike, ended up running out both Mohammad Hasnain and Usama Mir - the latter the only Sultans player other than Rizwan to reach double figures.

Saud Shakeel hit four sixes in an unbeaten 20-ball 42•PCB

Rizwan had said the Sultans would have bowled first too because they weren't sure how the pitch would play, but Shakeel and Allen seemed to have no qualms about batting on it. A touch of caution in the first couple of overs gave way to the realistion that the surface - or indeed the Sultans bowlers - posed no threat. Allen smashed David Willey for two sixes and a four in the third over and Shakeel, too, upped the ante, hitting a four and a six off Hasnain as Gladiators extracted 13 from the fourth over.

HBL PSL celebrates 300th match milestone as Quetta Gladiators repeat history with win over Multan Sultans in Lahore.

Sports Desk
April 30, 2025

tribune

HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) reached a significant milestone on Tuesday evening as it celebrated its 300th match, with the Quetta Gladiators defeating the Multan Sultans at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on

The moment was steeped in nostalgia, as Quetta also featured—and won—in the very first PSL match back on 4 February 2016 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Over the course of ten thrilling seasons, the HBL PSL has established itself as one of the leading T20 leagues globally, showcasing elite cricketing talent from around the world and delivering high-octane matches to millions of fans in Pakistan and abroad.

Among the league’s standout performers, Babar Azam has been a constant across all ten seasons, setting multiple records including most runs (3,621 in 96 matches), most half-centuries (34), most catches (49), and most fours (401).

Hasan Ali leads the all-time wicket charts with 121 wickets in 88 games.

England’s Jason Roy holds the record for the highest individual score (145 against Peshawar Zalmi in 2023), while Fakhar Zaman has hit the most sixes (117 in 90 matches).

The best individual bowling performance still belongs to Ravi Bopara, who took 6 for 16 in the inaugural season.

Mohammad Rizwan leads among wicket-keepers with 84 dismissals and 2,749 runs, while former Quetta skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed has captained the most matches (80) and secured the most wins as captain (38).

Veteran umpire Aleem Dar, who is set to retire at the end of this season, has officiated in a record 81 HBL PSL games.

Total matches played by each franchise in HBL PSL history:

  • Peshawar Zalmi – 110
  • Islamabad United – 105
  • Karachi Kings – 101
  • Lahore Qalandars – 100
  • Quetta Gladiators – 98
  • Multan Sultans – 86
Reflecting on the league’s journey, Salman Naseer, CEO of HBL PSL, remarked: “We are incredibly proud to have witnessed the 300th match of the HBL PSL. The league has never looked back since its 2016 launch, and its continued success is a testament to the quality of cricket, the passion of the fans, and the dedication of all those involved. I congratulate everyone who has played a part in this decade-long journey.”

As the HBL PSL continues to evolve, this milestone is not just a celebration of past success, but a marker of even greater heights yet to come.
