France calls for UN-led mission to evaluate China's Uighur treatment

https://www.dailysabah.com/world/fr...sion-to-evaluate-chinas-uighur-treatment/news

France called Tuesday for a United Nations-led observer mission to evaluate the treatment of China's Uighur population and accused Beijing of "indefensible practices" against the Muslim minority.

The proposal by Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian comes as tensions rise between France and China after Paris intensified its expression of public concern over the treatment of Uighurs in the western Xinjiang region.

"Since they say my statements are baseless, we propose an international mission of independent observers, under the auspices of (U.N.) rights commissioner Michelle Bachelet, to visit and bear witness," Le Drian told lawmakers in parliament.

Rights groups and experts say more than one million ethnic Uighurs and other Turkic-speaking minorities have been rounded up in internment camps.

Speaking in parliament last week, Le Drian pointed to allegations including "imprisonment camps for Uighurs, mass detentions, disappearances, forced labor, forced sterilizations and the destruction of Uighur heritage."

China's foreign ministry rejected those comments as "lies," saying that Xinjiang issues were not about human rights, religion, or ethnicity but about "countering violent terrorism and separatism."

But Le Drian stepped up his rhetoric on Tuesday, saying that in Xinjiang "there are indefensible practices that go against the universal principles enshrined in the major international human rights conventions."

He also accused the government of "widespread surveillance of the population and a comprehensive system of repression throughout the region."

Beijing and London have also locked horns on the issue after British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said it was "clear that there are gross, egregious human rights abuses going on" in the region.

Foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin rejected the claim as "nothing but rumors and slander."

The controversy over the treatment of Uighurs comes as tensions between the West and China rise over a draconian new security law in Hong Kong and mounting opposition to the use of products made by the Chinese telecom giant, Huawei.

Funny!

Turkey does not care about Uighurs but France shedding some crocodile tears.

. . .
While geopolitics is definitely at play here, we should welcome this move.

For those who question the intent and designs of the French, would you rather the French (or US or other western powers) not do anything to help the Uighurs? So what if geopolitics is at play here. If the Uighurs can benefit, then so be it.

LoL

Uighurs are doing great. There is no need for others to poke into the internal affairs of China.

.
I hope the western countries such as Australia, US, FRANCE, UK, and Canada open their doors wide to allow Uighurs in.
Talking doesn't work unless you're Indian.

Matter of other doors to be opened when PRC admits and is frank with what it is doing and why....and maybe do something like remove PRC citizenship from Uighurs....so at least its practicing some basic level of honesty on the matter.

Right now CCP is still claiming these are all normal things operating under PRC constitution and that Uighur PRC citizenship is not in question while this is happening to them at this scale.

If PRC asserts that to be the operating norm, well more countries will simply have to establish the facts on the ground....because PRC loses more and more trust and credibility each passing year.

If there are doing great, then such articles should not bother anyone.

. . .
This good and unfortunate at the same time

Good because it will put pressure on China to reduce its oppression of Uighurs

Unfortunate because this whole thing is an example of a Former colonial power interfering in the internal affairs of its former colony

This was hundred years ago

Cannot believe the Muslim countries arent raising the issues, just shows Muslim countries are nothing but lackeys and bootlickers.

If France or any other European nations decides to sanction the Xinjiang Chinese officials then I will consider that as a form of concrete action (although still very light) ... everything else is just bluster.

It's all about the Chinese money.

.
The only few groups crying about this hoax come from nations with a history of colonizing, massurdering, repressing, blockading and bombarding Muslim countries until this day and then some trolls keep asking why no one of their victims gives a shit about their crocodile tears, when they cheer for innocent Muslims getting shot and beaten to death by Indians, blown up by Brits and Australians and derived of basic needs and starved out by the USA when they arent bussy doing all the other things, just 5 minutes later.
