Essex Deaths: New Arrests As Vietnamese Families Say Relatives May Have Been In Truck

Dirt poor Vietnamese don't have $195,000.
Or $50,000.
Or $30,000.

The pair, who make around $400 a month between them, said the smugglers did not tell them how their daughter would be transported to the UK.

Sad to read this. Even in China, if you live in a rural area, $400 a month is still enough for more or less proper living, and it should be even more so in a cheaper country like Vietnam.

In other news, I read that their parents paid somewhere around $50k to smuggle their children to the UK. If they wanted to waste their money so hard, they could've easily moved to UK the proper way with $50k.

I think Norway or Sweden has a good attitude dealing with this: they hire advertising companies in Africa to tell locals that "there are no free lunch in our country," and tell people what they realistically can expect there, including all hardships and problems. Very few governments around have temerity to boldly say that "living in our country sucks, and even if you will make it, we have 50% income tax"

I think China needs to do the same with its own populace. Too many middle aged people still live with totally wrong impression of life overseas, and what a proper living should be for their children.

many people still have an illusion that even if you are unskilled, the moment you step on the land of the west you will have a prosperous life, while in reality you will just become some miserable homeless guy in Calais living off food aid from the United Nations till you get a low paying job in an expensive country.

the only case in which it would make sense to leave your country is either if you are from countries the likes of Venezuela & Zimbabwe or if you have a certain set of skills that are useless in your own country but are in demand in other countries, for example if you are an engineer but unemployed because your country has zero industry then yeah leave & go to another country in which engineers are in high demand, but even then chances are the host country is very competitive, that is you would need to be exceptionally skilled if they were to accept you.

personaly I think the reason for migration isn't just economic but also psycological, that is people from all around the world who didn't make it in their own societies want to start fresh in another one.

If you want to be rich just spend less than you earn.

I wish I had learn more about finance in school. But at school they do not teach you much about finance.
At one time in my life, I had to pay a house mortgage, loans on 2 cars, a golf membership (And I do not play golf) and a maid. End of the day there was not much savings.
I then calculated my maid's savings. She did not have to spend a cent. Lodgings, food was provided. At the end of her 2 year contract, and after paying off her debt, she would have about RM20,000 which was more then US$5,000 in cash. More cash then me !

Hahaha the Malaysian middle class trap. I know this well. It's not how much you earn, its how much you save. In China, they pay off their properties early like in 10-15 years. Highly frugal but very stressful unlike in Sg or Malaysia.

It is not like that for these Vietnamese. They know very well the situation in the UK (possibly except they can die during transport), thank to their system (their relatives may be already there).

There are now a lot of on going discussions on Vietnamese online community. Forumers (including people who participated in the chain previously or people who supported UK police in similar cases) describe how they transport these people by lorry, what they do in the UK to make money. In fact, if they can enter the UK, they can really make big money (of course by illegal ways)

Pls have some respect for the tragedy. Not the time to make jokes.
If anything then that: Vietnam economy needs higher growth rate, 8 percent or higher, and second, educate the people it’s not worth at all, risking lives by letting the smugglers to do the dirty transport jobs.

educate the people it’s not worth at all, risking lives by going abroad.
Our countries been doing that for years, but yet even our rich and educated flock there to waste their time, money, and lives.

It requires a change in thinking, a change in prevailing social attitudes. People are more eager to listen to reactionaries if it makes them feel good, than to obvious truth.

I knew many, many, many people who banged away scary amount of money, like from $200k to $1m, for a pitiful petit bourgeois living in the West. No, they did not make it in life by getting themselves to the West at all, despite them shouting it out loud at us "dirty peasants still stuck in China"

Even $200k is still a big enough sum in China to start a credible business. Imagine if all those naive nouveau riche put their time, energy, and talent for something good.

The Latest: China asks UK for more info on truck victims
By The Associated Press | Updated - Oct 28th, 2019 @ 3:26am | Posted - Oct 28th, 2019

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — The Latest on the 39 people found dead in the back of a truck in England (all times local):

5:20 p.m.

China says it has asked British authorities to provide more information on the identity of 39 people who were found dead in a truck in southeastern England last week.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Monday that the U.K. has not confirmed the victims' nationalities. British police initially believed they were Chinese, but later acknowledged that the details were still evolving.

Geng described reports that the victims had Chinese passports as "speculation."

The spokesman added that the Chinese embassies in Vietnam and the U.K. are in close contact with their counterparts in those countries.

He said he hoped "parties concerned about this incident should make remarks based on facts, instead of making subjective guesswork from first impressions."

Dozens of Vietnamese families have reported missing relatives whom they fear are among the dead.

This is true. Even internally, if you're a loser in a small village, moving to Mumbai or Shenzhen won't make you rich by itself. If you aren't prepared to work hard and gain skills, you'll end up living in the slums or basements.

What can I say, that is a very sad day for Vietnam.

Vietnamese government still keeping its mouth shut. This is such an inhuman thing to do when it's already proven the fallen victims are Vietnamese. I cannot imagine how the rest of the world looks at Vietnam. China even is pressing for more details about the identities of these people while knowing that they are Vietnamese. It's disgusting isn't it pretending it has nothing to do with Vietnam.

How shameful, I though being a communist government should have remove such backward elements from their culture but it look like it made a comeback due to Foreign influence from Confucian countries.

That is due to heredity. Indeed, in today's world, everything is decided by the global world sentient A.I., known as Skynet or the Matrix.

If one's ancestor used to be wealthy, then one would expect to be rich too. Similarly, those at war with the British Empire during WWII have mostly been "gratified" with a subsequent war by the U.S., right after the establishment of the Pax Americana: Koreas, Indochina, Iraq, Persia, Libya, etc.

In this context, during the French colonial occupation, Indochinese peasants were subjected to perform statute labour (corvée) and were frequently submitted to often arbitrary requisitions.

From 1914-1918, more than 100'000 Indochinese slave workers have been drafted to contribute to the French's war effort during the first world war.

Indeed, expert in lacquerware, Annamites were crucial in the aeronautics industry, where the French had copied the Chinese varnished paper, and used to build the wings and fuselage of their military airplanes.

1. Annamese experts at work in a French aircraft factory. The Annamites (so-called inhabitants of Annam in Indochina), experts in the use of lacquer and considered the most skillful, were mainly employed in aircraft construction.

Among other technologies introduced to France by these Indochinese cannon fodders, were the first rice paddy fields and rice cultivation in Camargue.

The untold and long forgotten plight of these Indochinese water carriers in the cruelest cold European climate of metropolitan France, taking into account that genetically, South East Asians are not fitted with extra nostril lenght associated with extra large-sized nasal mucous membrane needed to survive the local weather, has not only caused silent sufferings, but was the main factor behind the pulmonary diseases' casualties toll.

Therefore today's not so surprising death in a refrigerator trailer, following the most horrendous and agonizing breathing deprivation! (read: same same)
