NGHE AN: A photo of her missing daughter Bui Thi Nhung, an offering of fruit and a bouquet of flowers - a makeshift shrine laid by a desperate mother in a remote Vietnamese town many fear was home to some of the 39 people found dead in a truck in Britain.

More than 20 Vietnamese are feared to be among the bodies found in a refrigerated trailer in an industrial park in Essex east of London on Wednesday (Oct 23).

Many are believed to have come from central Vietnam, a hotspot for migrants hoping for better lives abroad.

In Nhung's town the signs of money sent back from overseas earners are everywhere: Motorbikes and cars, freshly renovated homes, and a recently-opened bubble tea shop along the main road.

There is also a church, filled on Saturday with locals praying for the 39 victims.

British police initially said the 31 men and eight women found in the truck on were Chinese.

But then came the pleas from desperate Vietnamese families fearing their relatives were in the vehicle.

Some received chilling messages from their relatives in what was believed to be their dying hours. Others have heard nothing at all.

"We are very, very sad and confused," said Bui Van Diep who fears his 19-year-old sister Nhung was on the ill-fated truck.

She left their small Phu Xuan village in central Nghe An province about two months ago and has not been heard from since.

"We really want to have a confirmation so that we can know about my sister," he said, stricken.

Their mother sits before a portrait of smiling Nhung on the makeshift altar weeping, hoping for any news at all from the missing teenager.

Normally set up only for the dead, Nhung's family now prays at the altar in the hopes she is still alive.

In this remote village of Nghe An province, one of Vietnam's poorest, most people know someone who has gone abroad.

Many embark on treacherous journeys overland via Russia or China, risking their lives and paying smugglers tens of thousands of dollars to get to the UK, often carrying falsified documents.

They are lured by promises of earning good money in Britain, where many illegal Vietnamese migrants work as manicurists or cannabis farmers.

"SO MUCH PAIN"

Promises of quick riches was what drove 27-year-old Nguyen Dinh Tu to Europe, where he hoped to earn enough to renovate the family home.

He left Vietnam for Germany in the last year, and paid smugglers US$6,400 in the hopes of making it to Britain.

But his family fears he might have not reached the country alive.

"We're devastated by this news. We're in so much pain," his brother Nguyen Van Tinh told AFP.

"We just wish authorities would help us bring the body of our loved one back," he said.

Tu had planned to meet his father-in-law in Britain and before getting on the truck told him to prepare the smuggling fee.

When Tu didn't arrive, his father-in-law called his family back home to say he was likely dead.

Like Nhung's family, the family now sits before an altar of the young man, praying for a miracle.

In neighbouring Ha Tinh province, Pham Thi Tra My's relatives have been frozen with grief since Wednesday when they got a chilling message from her.

They think she sent it in the last hours of her life from inside the cold trailer where she is feared to have suffocated to death.

"I'm sorry Mom. My path to abroad doesn't succeed. Mom, I love you so much! I'm dying because I can't breathe," the 26-year-old wrote.

When it first happened I had my doubts that they were Chinese. Now it looks to be that the poor victims were indeed al Vietnamese.

Just horrible God rest their souls. These evil smugglers must be taken down.

.
It doesn't really matter if they are Chinese or Vietnamese, those young lives were lost for nothing, the evil monsters behind this heart wrenching tragedy must be swiftly brought to justice. I guess UK doesn't have death penalty, those criminals should be tried in China and they will meet bullets in their heads in no time.

FEELING SO SAD SEEING THOSE YOUNG FACES.

Anna Bui Thi Nhung, Nguyen Dinh Tu and Tra My, all from Vietnam, are believed to be among those in the lorry

I don’t understand why such tragedy happens. It’s not worth anything paying huge sum to smugglers, risking everything then ends up in a container. For what? There are countries that offer residency for money. Many with programs for Vietnamese. When google I found this country
St Kitts and Nevis

a nice island in the Caribic.

a family of 4 get the citizenship for $195,000. That is probably cheaper than the sum that is paid for smugglers! The Visa allows free entry in 150 countries, including UK. Visa holder can stay up 6 months in UK. I hope people in VN can read this post. We must stop the criminal smugglers!

Why would anybody with $195,000 leave their country to begin with?:lol:

Viva Viet often suggesting China's economy collapsing in 2023, i find it more credible for Vietnam considering the amount of Vietnamese people would rather leave the poor country and seek better livelihood in the UK.

Stupidity, that's why.

I had a pre-approval for Nanyang Uni in Singapore and NTU in Taiwan for a process technologist study, but my parents went nuts for me not doing "businessy things big men do" and sent me to study for a business degree in Canada.

It was the most useless credential in my life. I had more payoff from my arc welding certificate I got from high school.

Those people, the 50+ Asians bunch know very little of world outside of their countries, and never really had a run in real business, yet try to tell us how to do "those businessy things" according to their view of the world...:hitwall:

I will not be surprised if this is the same in Vietnam

I'm not talking about going on vacation, studying abroad, or people that can get a H-1B visa (or whatever the UK equivalent is).

I'm wondering how a dirt poor, desperate person in Vietnam would have $195,000 to begin with.

And assuming they actually HAD that kind of money, why would they exchange it to risk suffocation in the back of a lorry?

.
Westerners think all who have a east Asian face are Chinese, actually Vietnamese and Chinese have different facial features and skin complexion if they look closer.
Btw, can't blame UK authority for wrong mistaken since they hold fake Chinese passport and some indeed look very Chinese like the 26years old young women. Plus a decade ago did have fujian migrant killed with such similar situation.

They were not really dirt poor. The girl (first one) had worked in Japan for years. But back in VN she would not find any work (with similar income), so she tried again to go abroad.

I think the same are with many other people in the world, like Polish and Romanian people. Poles were not really poor, by any standard, but they were leaving Poland en masse, until recently. You can call it "desperate" if you want.

$195,000 for 4, that means $50,000 each. If one considers they pay $30,000 or so per person, that is not worth ending up dead in a container.

Because brainless parents sending them there don't know that? I was a disgrace of a family for quite a few years for not choosing career in a businessy, white collar occupation until it became clear to my parents that my income working in an OEM manufacturing was few times better than that of my classmates who went for MBA and "big man job" in banking or corporations.

Again, that people who grew up in Asia before the market economy are terribly disinformated about what life in the West is, and are projecting their weird thoughts on their kids. They are terribly naive.

Mine for example though of 5k CNY bank teller job as "good" because it is what "rich Western people do," but when food handlers these day get 9k in Shenzhen it's bad in their opinion. Regular factory workers get 12k with few years of work experience. Party official jobs are not better. Salary of a section deputy is 12k — and this is the very top you can get by your 30.

Not so really poor they were for sure. With such money, one could've easily moved to a big city, and get a better than nothing job. For an economy like Vietnam, it's inconceivable that physically able man in his prime can't find a job.

Indeed, many Polish and Romanians are living better than people in Britain, yet can't stop complaining of "their countries being poor," or if it really is so, to do something with it.

Look at stories of small time entrepreneurs from China coming to Eastern European countries, and turning small cities around with measly $2-3m investments.

Dirt poor Vietnamese don't have $195,000.
Or $50,000.
Or $30,000.

The pair, who make around $400 a month between them, said the smugglers did not tell them how their daughter would be transported to the UK.

Whoever the nationality of the victim are, Chinese or Vietnamese, this is a very sad tragedy. The only way to stop this is to arrest and jail all those involved in this crime and also improve the economy and living conditions in Vietnam and China.
