The demands of people of Telangana can be met and so I don't think there is a need for separate state.

AP is a huge state with large parts underdeveloped - division will surely create more avenues for development.

On the other side of the coin, some people claim the the larger State is not responsive to their group as some other group members enjoy inordinate powers in the bigger State. This is the main complaint of Telangana State residents who feel Andhra residents take up all the jobs at the expense of Telangana people.

Generally, the conventional wisdom is that smaller administrative units are more responsive to the needs of the people, universally.

I guess the debate will go on. A lot depends on how the people of telangana vote on the issue. If BJP wins, Telangana may become a reality. Historically, Telangana use to be a separate State in its own right.

Smaller administrative units doesn't mean a smaller states. The idea is that more and more power should be devolved to the smallest administrative units which are the Panchayat in Village and a Ward in cities. Politicians with their selfish interests have consildated all the Power either at the center or the state level leaving very little at the grass roots. Until this changes the problem won't be solved even if we have 500 States.

Because of natural resources. Besides Bihar is as big as Japan. Have you seen how people are crammed in Tokyo?

There is a hot debate about carving out Telangana State out of Andra Pradesh. Telangana was merged into Andra State in 1956 to form Andra Pradesh. Now some people in the State want to carve out Telangana State again. I have heard that BJP supports the formation of Telangana whereas Congress opposes it.

I am interested in the opinion of the Indian members of PDF.

I fully support creation of Telangana state within Union Of India.. this will help in breaking states down to more manageable size and national funds can be managed properly. Look at Jharkhand.... and Uttaranchal.... both carved out of existing large states .. and now they are doing even better then their parent states.

How? Hyderabad is completely surrounded by the proposed Telangana state, whereas Haryana and Punjab share a capital on their border.

Btw yes I do support the creation of Telangana. The same thing needs to happen with UP.

But that is the point , precisely. Their demands have not been met. The Andhra and Coastal people have the State machinery in their hands and all the resources are diverted for their use, Telangana is not getting their fair share of water for their farming community. All the State Jobs are given to Andhra people, Telangana people are not getting their fair share of jobs. The list of grievances is long and have not been addressed for last 50+ years.

I think now with the support of BJP they might finally get their wish. Modi is firmly behind them.
