COAS Gen. Kayani Urges Less Spending on Defence

I think some of you are reading too much into what he is saying. In any event he hasnt got that much long to go

even the PA is not as dumb as we thought they realize the fact that they would be done before the war would start nothing wrong with that however nothing he says is worthwhile unless he wants to do something about the hundreds of terrorist training camps on Pakistani soil

you devoted huge resources and men even during kargil and you want me to believe they'd be done before the 'hypotethical'war starts......buddy, you already know what the ramification are for any act of aggression on Pakistani Nation.

if 10 kids took over your financial capital i hate to think what else could happen in a conventional war.....better you just tone down your empty rhetoric and you also start to look after your OWN poor population and infrastructure - the way we ought to

Kiyani has always been known to say one thing and do another.

Remember when he said PA wouldn't allow any more drone strikes?

Don't get too excited about this news bhartis. :D

Development can't take place if the country is not secure.

Our borders are secure, thanks to what some might call decades of military extravagance.
We have a powerful armed forces, enough to deal with external threats. Secondly, a strong economy can do wonders for defense, a country with a weak economy and strong military, is weak.

Take extremism for example, whether bought about by our enemies or not, the only cure is education, not military win.

People need to be educated, everyone on our soil should abide by our law, law establishment and enforcement should be strengthened from the Supreme court right down to the local police station. Jobs, opportunities, health and education need to be given to Pakistanis, no-one will resort to extremism.

We are suffering from 3rd world diseases, no money and still corruption, no rule of law, no education and healthcare, load shedding and economic uncertainty.

Kiyani has always been known to say one thing and do another.

no actually the COAS has always been a man of his word; never reneged on any statement he said in which certain actions or reforms would be under-taken

Remember when he said PA wouldn't allow any more drone strikes?

well he implied what the PAF AM said....give the order, they'll be blasted out from the sky. If they undertake a unilateral action, it puts the civilian govt. (which has always given more lee-way to the Americans) in a precarious state. Do you suggest the Army continue to look like it acts not in tandem - but instead at total loggerheads with the govt. by under-taking such a ''entreprenurial'' decision

Don't get too excited about this news bhartis. :D

let the bhartis continue to go to their local astrologists for their excitement

Drone strikes are not something that the army has to take a stand on.

Kayani only said here that the defence budget should be cut in order to get more money to the people for development. This was more of a response to Nawaz Sharif more than anything else.

BTW, he also said 'we will move the whole mountain if we have to but we will get the soldiers back'.

Last year Pakistan responded with India's hike of 11.5% by 12% hike. Shall we expect 18 % hike for India's 17% hike even when your funds for develoment sector keep on decreasing.

If all Generals and commanders can be given a 50% pay cut and remove all their Batmans. Pakistan could save billions.

In which other country do Generals and commanders live in opulent mansions and drive in German and Italian sports cars.

oh and by the way --- COAS mentioned earlier in 2008 that he does hope to see, under his tenure, needless expenditures being curtailed while not sacrificing on the QUALITY of the PA.

Under his leadership there have been some admin and overtly noticeable changes. Morale is high and the men are always ready for a fight at any time with the enemies of the country. I say this loud and crystal clear in case any of you may be confused or having doubts - and granted my words alone shouldnt be your only assurance.

some of you people are acting as if Gen. Kayani just out of the blue came up with this speech. It's really mirroring what he's been saying for the past few years. Now hopefully a good precedent will be set.

everyone -- even the INFORMED development agencies and international financial institutions (including the former head of the world bank mission and the current IMF res-rep in Islamabad) attest to the fact that Pakistan Army is actually the least corrupt and in fact all of its ventures in the country generate revenues payable to the government of Pakistan.....in other words, they are CONTRIBUTING to the budget in the form of taxes.

when will these bloody idiots in political power pay their taxes, pay off the duties owed on their Pajeros and Land Cruisers? Will they stop mis-declaring their assets? What's their contribution to the country? What did they do for their country?

This article in Dawn completely changes the tone of what Kiyani actually said... It has omitted half, of what Kiyani said... I heard almost his entire talk to media in a prog... Yes, he said all these things mentioned in this article, but also when asked abt responding to Nawaz Sharifs statement abt Pak withdrawing first, he said he would not like to comment....but then also said tht everybody knows why Pak Army is in Siachen...We are defending our country's borders, and it was India who sent its army first in 1984, in response, Pak sent its army there...Also, as this article said,Kiyani said tht we want peace with India, and tht we would want to spend more on development, all issues including siachen must be resolved through negotiation but he said tht our wish for peaceful coexistence shouldnt be taken as a weakness..One reporter said, tht what do u think abt the high price ..the country has to pay , also in the sense tht soldiers live in extremely harsh conditions here...he said...yes, we know it, but then its army's duty, and we have to do it, no matter how high the price..he said, tht its the job of army to protect its borders, and again said, we are not here, bcoz, we want to be, but tht it was India, who sent its army first, so we have to defend...I wonder, why Dawn has omitted such important parts of his talk completely in this article...

you have details on their paycheck?

do share

opulent mansions? German and italian sports cars? All government provided

by the way, they drive in the same ''german cars'' that were ordered and paid for well over 8 years ago (the same ones in use and employed by ministers and other VVIPs in government)

i think somewhere along the line, people forgot that a soldier is trained to kill; a soldier who is worth his salt, sweat and blood is trained to survive even in harsh and unforgiving environments - live on instinct.

they signed up for this honour to protect the country, nobody forced them to. They did it willingly because they love their country and there is no price you can put on honour of having served your country.

Well, they have the same Mercedes that Mush used 10 years back.

While your CM Sindh has the latest S-Class, bullet proof i might add.

Your CM Sindh has sought to buy a new Executive jet to replace the Learjet 45 they bought 4 years ago, and that learjet has very low flying hours.

The new aircraft is going to cost alot, and from the public expenditure.

And what is the need for having a minister of Weather Change, a minister of Capital development, a Minister for food security and research???

Which mansions do the generals live in? Major Generals live in houses no larger than the one I have in Isl.

The top chiefs might have big houses, but not mansions by any means.
Do you even know where the COAS lives? No you dont. Because you can't see that in Canada.
Your answer will be appreciated.

Well, cutting the budget while performing with optimum efficiency is a logical thing to do, so Kiyani is doing the right thing indeed.
