China will construct two conventionally powered aircraft carriers in Dalian and Shanghai between 2014 and 2015, a source from China's Central Military Commission has told Duowei News, an outlet run by overseas Chinese.

Under the Commission's Project 048, China aims to establish three carrier battle groups by 2020 so that all three major fleets of the PLA Navy will be able to carry out missions with the full support of an aircraft carrier. The two new Type 001A indigenous carriers will be updated versions of China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, which was originally a Soviet-era Admiral Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier purchased from Ukraine in 1998. They will also likely be designed with a ski-jump ramp, according to Duowei.

Sources said that the General Equipment Department of the PLA has already signed a contract with the Beijing-based China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation to build the two carriers. The price of the two vessels is estimated to be worth US$9 billion.

Is that 9B each or 9B for both?

It's 9 Billion for nothing. the source is not great. Future weapons are not really talked about officially, notice how we only knew of new fighters as they conduct test flights.

No legit news on carriers until they are at least half done, or even launched.

Between 2014~15 - so all the prior photos blah blah about the shape of building the hull or whatever of the indigenous aircraft carriers are rumours

Correction:

The GAD has signed two contracts with the Beijing-based China State Shipbuilding Corporation(CSSC)and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation(CSIC),respectively。

Flattops with steam driven catapults/EMALS must await the outcome of bidding rounds for 5th generation stealth fighters involving Institutes No. 601 and NO. 611

We just have to wait and see.

for 4.5 B they should go for helecarrier, not AC.

The 9 billion figure is plucked from a company(a subsidiary of CSIC) announcement of recent orders which apparently contain more than the cost of a CV。

The company also says that it will be in a position to announce another huge order within the next month or so,this time possibly involving the construction of a number of Type 052D DDGs。

that means they already started to build it???because, generally,it takes around 8 years to make an Aircraft Carrier.as the target to make operational both of them within 2020,that means the parallel construction already started and maybe half work done already.right??

They will also likely be designed with a ski-jump ramp, according to Duowei.

the conceptual Ac design shows some kind of hybrid which sports both Catobar as well as Ski-Ramp.but most likely, its not going to be.plus,as take off problem of J-15 has surfaced(which couldn't take off with more than 2 ton payload),shouldn't you guys go for a Catobar one, than relying on Ski-Jump??whats your thoughts, chinese members??

Actually for carriers of that size the U.S. built them in 2 years from keel laid down to launch. Even the CVN Enterprise took 2 years. Nimitz class it was 3 years. The Ford took 4 years. This is all peacetime don' forget.

actually,Nimitz class took some 4-5 years(later carriers took some 3 years) from laid down to launch.but thats due to they made 10 of them,so later versions were made in less time.but making a new carrier(and also for the first carrier),it generally takes significant amount of time.

Why conventional powered and STOBAR config ?

I think steam catapult facility was already built or was it EMALS ?

how do you count the 8 years?
and the article said it targets to form 3 CBGs around 2020?

you people are genius, first about the cost, then the time for completion and then the bragging of usa's construction! :cheesy::o:
