China renovates 2 mln disabled people's homes in six years

Nearly 2.1 million homes of disabled Chinese people have been renovated since Aug. 1, 2012, when the regulation on constructing barrier-free environment was issued, according to the China Disabled Persons' Federation.

During the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020), barrier-free renovation of the homes of impoverished severely disabled people was listed as a significant way to lift them out of poverty, said Zhou Jian, an official with the federation, at a recent press briefing.

Over the years, the construction of barrier-free facilities has gone from the construction of physical environment to that of the social environment, and included intangible content such as regulations and public awareness, Zhou said.

"The construction of barrier-free facilities is a symbol of progress and the basis for disabled people to integrate into the society," he said.

However, Zhou noted that there are still 3.3 million homes yet to be renovated.

Braille on the elevator buttons in apartments...that's a great start!

But how about giving them greater accessibility outside?

Now add wheelchair ramps at ALL intersections (i.e. millions) with tactile surfaces for visually impaired people.

Plus walk signals with audible countdowns so visually impaired people know how long they have left before the lights turn green.

There are numerous other changes that can make a difference. Stuff like ALL buses having wheelchair lifts, Braille writing on restroom entrance signs so they know which is which, building codes for apartments requiring wheelchair entrance ramps with power doors that open using a handicapped button, etc.

Good governance with excellent characteristics

For taking care handicapped people , US does it better than China.

These are renovations of people's own houses, not public places. The IQ82 member above failed to understand because he only looked at the picture and quickly typed a response.

Of course, it is a government's basic duty to make sure public places are accessible to all.

But here, we are talking about renovating disabled people's own private homes.

The Chinese government see's an opportunity in everything, they have a very detailed policy with 5 year plans that have a 95% success rate.

Even going as far as renovating the homes of the disabled (a hefty task indeed) so that they have easier access and gain economic value no matter how marginal it is, not only that, they are a socialist government working for the benefit of all the people.

(Fun fact: The Chinese government has the most brilliant economic policies in the world guided by the most intelligent technocrats as well.)

Even in Canada, the government does not provide free home renovations for disabled people's homes. Any renovations are out if their own pocket. During tax return filing all they get is a measly tax credit

I am sure it is the same in the US, if it is so in Canada. I guess by "the people, of the people, for the people" goes out of window. Just a regular Timocracy.

Great work by the Chinese government.

At its core the Communist party is focused on maintaining social harmony and this is an excellent step in the right direction. Poor people, disabled people, old people, mentally ill people, etc, leaving these people behind will create a social time bomb.

Here in Australia we got so many fakers its a national sport. People claim depression, sore back, obesity... etc and flood the Centrelink(dole) offices.

Besides, making their life more convenient will add to their productivity, which is good for the country in the long term.

I guess one of the most important preconditions of productivity is happiness.
