China offers stunning duty-free access to Bangladeshi goods

Well, its undoubtedly an amazing offer......and if taken full advantage of i believe, unemployment is going to go down first. And thats good.

But, there should be some reasons behind it. After hasina came to power, relations were kind-off cold between us......could be that hasina's china visit was fruitfull, but there should be other reasons too. I think its mainly good, rather than just politics.....

Cheers!!!
No country really loves another country for nothing. It is more true about the relationship between BD and China. The country called Bangladesh had never in the past any kind of cultural ties with China, these two people are racially different and their individual history never in the past overlapped with each other.

With BD, only Pakistan, India and upto certain extent Afghanistan can claim a shared history, but not China. So, China is not becoming so generous without any political reason. China certainly is aware of BD population's discontent with India which is only too eager to get all the advantage from BD. China's offer this time has set up a new standard for Bangladesh in its relationship with India.

India has to reciprocate in kind to the Chinese offer to BD and doing so India may go broke considering its economic strength.

Excellent news for Bangladesh.

If India wants to retain it's influence in Bangladesh, it must counter the Chinese offer, or risk losing some of that influence.

It's all business, and I feel no sense of hostility towards China on this issue.

Now, how will GOI respond?

I think GoI should seriously consider some steps to counter this.
I really dont know what trade can we allow without impacting local industry! ... Maybe EastWatch can comment here on what good's can be exported from BD.

It seems Chinese generous offer has became a headache of GOI/Indians. But, lol, it's late for India who did not think for BD before.

Read about indian duty free deception. Chinese duty free access was just a slap in the indian face. Indian sure dont like their odds - Chinese gesture for sure ruined indian design and many of its investment for stooge elemens and there is very little indian can do to compete - that's the bottom line.

Bangladesh : Duty-free access to India meaningless – Experts

Tuesday, March 30, 2010 13:42
But according to experts, the good intentions never translated in to action, despite there being a good demand for Bangladeshi goods for the reason that, India imposed eight percent countervailing duty and a four percent special additional duty.

This made the landing cost of Bangladeshi clothing very costly in India and completely negated the impact of duty-free access, due to which Bangladesh has been able to ship only 50 percent of the eight million pieces quota.

They are also of the opinion that exports under the tariff rate quota (TRQ) involve long procedures, which sometimes discourages exporters and advice that, if India really wants to make the offer meaningful, it must relax rules.

Chinese duty free gestrure gave another slap to US policy of not granting duty free access to Bangladeshi garments. Just a day before of Chinese offer became news, US ambassador actually justifying US position (with element of indian influence) why Bangladesh should not be granted duty free access.

From most of south east Asia China has forced US out (in terms of economic and trade influence) and installed itself as most dominant economic and trading partner. It went ahead to create around $120 billion fund for ASEAN countries and forced IMF/WB out of there. This looks to be just extension of that policy further westward. Sure india will "benefit" from it and I would let indian ponder on that definition of "benefit".

Moriarty defends high US tariff

Dhaka, May 06 (bdnews24.com) — US ambassador James F Moriarty played the Africa card defending high US tariffs for Bangladeshi products, suggesting that it was to protect the smaller exporters.

He indicated the export interest of small African countries who strongly object to Bangladeshi garments getting completely free access to the US market.

The US government came under criticism at a discussion meeting on Thursday for not giving duty-free market access to Bangladesh, a least developed country.

Allegations were made that there was no level playing field for Bangladeshi traders entering the US market.

Come on dude , why should we offer one? Next time China offers them 100 billion dollars for free, so will we keep doing the same? We have to keep our economy in mind. Unless they give us duty free access , there is no reason for us to give access to them.

What else can we expect from an overjealous Indian govt and its politician/bureaucratic tangle! Indians are basically very famous as a miser group of people. No one ever heard that Indians are generous like us or Pakistanis. These self-centered Beniyas are for exporting their goods only.

^ I think Indian sikh Punjabies are very generous.

LOL, I think west-northern Indians are better than other Indians e.g. Punjabies and Kashmiris. If I like them then why I'll not appreciate them? They are not like people of Kolkata.

Your intentions are clear here dude...derailing the thread with off topic India bashing posts..thankfully I am in no mood to engage in a argument with you...Only thing I can say is I am a Punjabi ( a North westerner) and staying in kolkata..so I know more than what you do about both these people...so please do not try to get into this...once again..stick to the topic.

If I like them then why I'll not appreciate them? They are not like people of Kolkata.

People trading with Bangladeshis are not just people from Kolkata, they also include people from all over India (including north westerners)...and this is now poven that you know only about Kolkatans that too very little.

India does not have to do some research works to identify which goods to import. Just open the gate so that we can export as we like. And, also at the same time do not forget to close your fencidile factories along our border. Then, see the effects on Indian economy.

We need China more than China needs us to counterpose Indian hegemony. The need for china felt even bigger when we decided to allow Indian goods to move through our land and ports.
