China offers stunning duty-free access to Bangladeshi goods

Atleast ..you were able to see this with sane mind but not with blinded patriotism and unnecessary animosity...thanks for that..
But even the low cost labor thing.. I dont really agree with that too.. because ... China is still 10 to 15 years away from the point where it can feel the effect of increased cost of the labor... and we have to realise here that ..not entire China is "Shangai" or "Bejeing" developed..it still has people in its heartland ..who can be as cheap as Subcontinent people..

I dont know BD, but as I know, indian average labour prise is 1/4-1/3 of china. Maybe tibet is cheaper, but if move the factory to tibet, some other cost should be considered like transport cost, they must transport the raw meterial from east coast to tibet and transport the finished products back to east coast for export, the cost will be huge.

.
Like I said bud, you are the base, your views don't change. I don't know how old your are. In the '90s some in right wing world it was spreading like wildfire that U.N will take over America. Well it didn't happen.

It didn't happen in 96-01 in BD when AL was in power. Take a chill pill and calm down.

By talking about an IMMINENT take over of BD by a big neighbour, people like Idune always disgrace our country. These people do not have the sense that in this way they actually glorify that big country. What a stupidity! Feeble minded razakars always will remain razakars.

These people are so naive that they cannot get rid of their Party affiliation even in an international Forum. Pakistanis are genereous enough to allow Bangladeshis to participate in PDF. But, these razakars are here to take advantage of their generosity. These people, as usual, are fond of name calling of people, who are not razakars.

A production base in BD when the raw materials, machines and then the finished products are to be transported via Malacca Strait may be quite expensive. On the other hand, transportation via a BD-Burma-Yunan route will be much cheaper and will take only 12 hours or less.

Such a route will benefit also Tibet. A BD-Burma-Yunan route will be much shorter than the Malacca-Shanghai-Tibet route. If China uses the former, then it will help also the further industrial development of Tibet.

I have lived in US througout 90's and on ... I am well aware what swept through 90's - economic recovery and Newt Gingrich. So please spare us from another load of your bs.

And you can not see through the difference between 96 and today's reality but you want people to take your word against ground reality??? Try late late late night comedy show, even for that I doubt you have any chance.

Calling anyone who exposes Awami decption, looting killing and raping and indian stooge act automatically become target of your name calling - sometime "rajakar", sometime burmese. Have you made up your mind who I am. Because, its not phycially possible to be a "rajakar" and a "burmese" at same time. Oh by the way awami minister unable to extort money and excert illegal power called a private bank MD "rajakar" and sent gunman to abduct him. Its pitty you have no such power but a awami branded big mouth.

All the best to Bangladesh. All countries have interests to offer deals and have interests to accept deals. Long-term this is in good interest of China to build good relations with Bangladesh and it is in BD's interests to further strengthen its economy - so it is win-win for both.

Regarding India burning bridges with its neighbors - it is sad, but true. But most geographically large countries tend to overshadow the smaller ones in the neighborhood leading to bad blood. E.g. India with its neighbors, Russia with the likes of Ukraine and the "stan" countries and even China with the likes of Taiwan and Mongolia.

China offers duty-free access for 5,000 items

By Anisur Rahman, Correspondent Published: 00:00 May 9, 2010
Dhaka: China has offered duty-free access for nearly 5,000 Bangladeshi products in a "goodwill gesture" marking a significant development in economic ties between the two countries after Prime Minister Shaikh Hasina's Beijing visit in March this year, officials and reports said here yesterday.

"The Chinese embassy here has informed us of the offer for the duty-free access of our 4,721 products. We expect to get the detailed list of products later this month," a senior commerce ministry official told media.

He added that Beijing has not imposed any preconditions for the access or sought any reciprocal action by Bangladesh.

The offer came nearly two months after Hasina made her maiden Beijing tour, which Dhaka described as the beginning of a "strategic partnership" between the two countries.

Bangladesh enjoys duty-free access to 27 European Union nations under its Everything But Arms (EBA) trade access facilities the continental grouping extend to least-developed countries.

The country also enjoys duty-free access for hundreds of products to countries in North America, Asia and Oceania. But in most cases, Bangladesh's main export item, apparel, has been made off-limit.

Competitive advantage

Financial Express said Tariff Commission officials expected ready-made garments and leather and leather goods would be included in the Chinese duty-free access offer as Bangladesh has competitive advantages in these products.

"If garments and some of our top export items are given duty-free access to the Chinese market, we'll be an economic force to reckon with in a few years' time," a Tariff Commission official told that newspaper. The Tariff Commission, which operates as a government think tank on trade issues, has been tasked with examining the Chinese offer and facilitating negotiations.

Bangladesh earlier sought duty-free access for 39 items to Beijing during the last Bangladesh-China Joint Economic Commission meeting in Beijing in July last year.

Business analysts said duty-free access to the Chinese market is very important for Bangladeshi merchandise, as it is the fastest growing economy in the world with a population of 1.3 billion and the growth of major Asian economies now largely hinge on its expansion.

Bilateral trade

Over the past few years, China has replaced India as Bangladesh's biggest import destination with bilateral trade touching over $4 billion (Dh14.71 billion), though heavily skewed in favour of Beijing.

The country's major export items to China include raw jute, leather, shrimps, woven garments, camera parts, copper wire, plastic waste and engineering products but none of them enjoy duty-free access.

The development came as Foreign Minister Dipu Moni earlier said Bangladesh entered into a "strategic partnership" with Beijing with Hasina's maiden China visit.

China, she said, was no more a product-exporting country to Bangladesh and "it now appeared as a partner in our overall development" while the approach of the Beijing's leadership to Bangladesh was "very positive" and the "warmth" of the Chinese leaders and people was "beyond routine". "The Cold War age perspective of balance of relations is now invalid [that] we have age-old ties both with India and China and deeper relations with one of them would affect the ties with another," she said.

Razakar tails cannot be straightened, you have proved it. AL deception is far better than razakar deception because they do not use the name of our great religion Islam. You have tainted this Forum by talking lies and taking deceptive methods to propagate your ****** politics. Be a good Muslim first, then talk about other people's deception.

So, when your favourite country India is going to take over our country? Is it in 2010 or after? Grow up, you little pissing baby!

Congratulations to Bangladesh for getting a nice offer from China:yahoo:.

China has given 120 times (estimated i doubt :undecided:) what Bangladesh has asked for :). This shows the strategic importance of bangladesh to china in south asia. Is China generous in giving an offer BD I would say no Because in the past BD is getting the same offers from the West.
China is not a super power yet or at least the China is not developed entirely yet, There are still under developed regions like west China and Tibet, so this is an offer which has a strategic importance. It came at a time when the SAARC meet was concluded .
China wants to be a global hub for manufacturing and it is in the process of becoming so the point of outsourcing is Entirely Worng. Considering China has huge human resources to not only serve itself but also for doing outsourced work for generations to come.
Whether BD will benefit from the deal will be determined as thetime goes on. For the time being i feel indirectly India has done some good to BD
I feel the recent statements form PRC suggest some worrying prospects in south asia for China.

what statements do you speak of?

Well, its undoubtedly an amazing offer......and if taken full advantage of i believe, unemployment is going to go down first. And thats good.

But, there should be some reasons behind it. After hasina came to power, relations were kind-off cold between us......could be that hasina's china visit was fruitfull, but there should be other reasons too. I think its mainly good, rather than just politics.....

Cheers!!!

modern manufacturing needs not only massive amounts of labor, but incredibly developed technology to manage both labor and machinery, especially large scale industrial production of chemical goods such as feedstocks, plastics, drugs, food, enzymes and maybe even fuels.

we aren't actually outsourcing the industries, just parts of them. china will still have a huge textile industry, for example, but it'll focus more on producing fiber, clothes, designs and machinery to other countries rather than on the actual assembly of clothes. for the finished product, we can turn to bangladesh.

better than turning to US client states like Nicaragua. I bought a made in nicaragua shirt, had a tear within a few months.
