China, not America, likely behind Hafiz Saeed's house arrest

Yep, it is official. The house arrest is meant to provide protection to Hafiz Saeed.

Indians celebrating prematurely as usual.

LOL at the China jibe. China has never interfered in such matters. The notion is ridiculous.
Indian PM need protection, US president need protection.. Many VIPs need protection.. The easiest way to give protection for them is make a big jail.. Detain them all in that.. What an idea??

He specialises in Pakistan - so its no surprise his articles are about Pakistan.

And yes, I am the Queen of England.

I've read his articles and he's called into question Gul's policies - which do not seem to have benefited Pakistan much. Apart from his work as ISI chief - which Kugelman notes was a success by the standards of ISI - he mostly made several preposterous claims that nobody - whether US or Pakistani has corroborated (some of the more silly one - such as the one about US forces carrying Osama;s body from Afghanistan to Pakistani to stage a capture - has not been confirmed even by Gul's own pals - the taliban or Hafiz).

You are free to read his articles on Dawn - had he been as abusive as you are Dawn would have stopped his writing long ago.

Kugelman's analysis has been confirmed by nearly everybody who analyses South Asia. Here's a gem of an article.

To argue with someone intellectually about an issues one thing, but to mock someone death and degrade him, considering most of the Pakistani do consider Gen Gul as a patriot, is not only highly inflammable but also lack of any journalistic ethics.

He is nothing more then a Zionist swine, so called "Pakistan expert", whos job is to find faults within Pakistan, build anti Pakistan narrative about long held policies and ways. As for DAWN, they will give space to anyone who can fill their pockets. They even published the planted and fabricated story which is still haunting them and ruling family as "Dawnleak". There is an agenda, crytal clear to the people of Pakistan.

@Syed.Ali.Haider You were circumspect about Chinese/Pak relationship doing anything beyond laying miles of tarmac and concrete or singing 'Chin/Pak' love songs. Here is indications of how the worlds largest uncompromising athiest society driven by business meets idealogical dogma that infests Pakistan. One will give way and we can see who steps back. As CPEC takes hold other angularities in Pakistan are going to have to be smoothened for CPEC to succeed and you know where the force for that will come.

I drew this conclusion long time ago when the unthinkable happened. The army was used to bulldoze Lal Masjid with the doyen of the Islamists in middle of it all. No leader in Pakistan would have had the dares or the foresight. Both of these deficits were provided by Chinese and you saw what happened. The thing with the Chinese is they don't anounence their policies from the podium in front of the world press. It's all done with quick call to where it matters. The COAS, the PM and few critical ministers. End off !!!

Or else no more CPEC, no more of those goodies for the military and no more Chinese shield in UN and world power centres against Indian/US lobbies.

As we move forward expect more. Slow but sure. That is the Chinese way. Unrelenting but step by step.

All I will say at the present time is that Pakistan will find China to be a very different "friend" than the unreliable Uncle Sam. And different here means just that, not good or bad, just different.

different
More proactive. They will extract their pounds worth of flesh for every pound they invest. Good news for secularists ......

You see the Islamists have had some of the worlds most richest countries sponsoring them. The petrodollar steroids pumped into the Islamists parties by Saudia Arabia and GCC have given them the power to gain ascendancy. The left or secularists have been orphans and more or less have been wiped out by this mullah onslaught. Now we have a antidote providing a alternative coming from a rampant, vigorous athiest society where religion is 'money'. And I know who is going to gain the upper hand.

High five - China !

I agree. I think China has learned many lessons from the U.S.'s experiences at supporting Pakistan and know not to make the same mistakes, if that can possibly be helped. Furthermore, treaties between China and Pakistan mean the relationship between them is fundamentally different than between the U.S. and Pakistan.

I do admire your unbridled enthusiasm.

Pakistan's relationship with China is subject to the same principles of international geopolitics that ruled its relationship with USA. National interest will reign supreme on both sides, subject to who gets to define them for each country.

Solomon, it's very simple. Chinese are not going to invest a dollar in a religious cesspool. It is not that they are bothered about the 'religious cesspool' from dogmatic point of view. They are very business like. However they know this 'religious cesspool' is full of those who only think about the afterlife and not the herelife - which does not make the right conditions for making investmenta. They want returns on thier investments in this life and will forego the 72 virgins paycheck in next life, thank you very much.

In order for CPEC to succeed Pakistan has to have a business friendly environment that is open to the world. For that to happen the Chinese will do some behind the scenes pulling of the strings and if need be the army COAS, Indeed we already saw the army setting up a special security division to safeguard the CPEC and Chinese, That is because Chinese are not going to have their investment derailed, hindered by some two bit mullah who declares some fatwa or some other drive against the 'infidels'. They want a no nonsense business friendly climate. They know the army is the most efficient organization inside Pakistan and accordingly told the army to provide the security.

And the army also understands from a strategic perspective that China is absolutely vital as a ally againsat India. So it will deliver what the Chinese want. Win win for all.

I do admire your unbridled enthusiasm.
I believe as long as you are breathing look up and push even harder. I apply that in dictum in my life and tell that to others.

I think, you people are reading too much from this incident...its nothing new. Pakistan knows how to play with world powers and deflects their pressure and focal point. Remember, we have once break all relationship with Taliban regime right after 9/11...so what, does it means we surrender all our interests altogether.

The fundamental will never change as far as Pakistan core interests are concerned, weather we would be influenced by USA, USSR, China or even Martians.

Pakistan have full right to use Proxies against its much bigger and arch enemy and no one can dictate us on this, we can apprehend one Hafiz at one point and let loose another...its our choice.

True but the equation might the same but the input variables are decidely differant. Therefore results will be differant. USA was on other side of earth. Transient impertative brought US/Pak together. Once these were done USA could walk away to North America. In thios case China is next door. That geographic reality creates differant input variables that are constant. China has to think long term. Pakistan is a constant reality right next to it's border. That is the differance. Big differance.

That is exactly why they have iron-clad and generous protections for their investments in Pakistan.

Now take all that and see how it applies to China's other vassal - North Korea. The parallels are there for all to see.
