What's new

Can anyone explain what happened in Karachi beach?

During Moonsoon season Winds are strong, swell is high and people shouldn't go swimming in the sea unless they are expert.
July-August is the peak of Moonsoon season.
Sadly Eid was in this month and too many people headed towards the sea to cool off and celebrate eid holidays.
Also if you see the weather charts the wind has been east south east for the past few days and that is offshore, and people will get blown off shore away from land due to the wind.
Combine that with 6-8 foot swell, conditions were pretty dangerous if not deadly.
What caused so many deaths is anyone's guess. I think it was over adventurous swimmers who might have ventured too far out into the sea .

ahhh thanks...
I'm guessing "section 144" is a ban in some area?
but then why to blame the administration? if they were banned from swimming?

Well you should know that in third world countries like Pakistan people break rules and regulations all the time and then when something happens opposition parties sensing an opportunity lay the blame on the administration in power.

it isn't easy for a swimmer to swim in an open sea during monsoon season.

Water is water. The choppy waves on the beach only form at beach end.

You just have to be wary of RIP Currents and know how to handle them.

Other wise there is hardly any difference.

When I was in Pakistan Air Force they dropped us in Open Sea 10 miles out for two days ( Sea Survival Course).

We had to demonstrate ability to go in and out of the Dinghy without Mae West and swim in the open sea. Trust me, it was no different than being in a swimming pool.

I know an officer who survived after falling in a river (in GB) and tht too at night... he floated with the water current n caught a stone/boulder... he was rescued....

I learned swimming when i was 4 or 5... my father threw me in the swimming pool ...

Never swam in the sea.. but tried tht in the Indus n Kabul rivers... :D

First you get scared when you see those higher mofo rivers .. but you learn to conquer em..

.
in short , Sea says " You try to mess with me , i will take the life out of you and throw your bodies out " ...
sad incident , but our awaam never learn to listen to anyone ...or any danger signs even if there is any ...

Swim in a pool is different
Swim in a river is different
Swim in a deep sea is different
Swim in a beach is different
The beach is a place where waves come and return and make a clash with in coming waves, this all procedure also follow with a route of FLOW of waves, the flow of waves not goes towards in deep water, inside few hundred meters the flow of waves change the route to the left or right from beach(depend on warnings of flow) And if you are a good swimmer on beach and you lost the control the best thing is not swim hard and let's the wave flow you till a rescue team come!!
The depth also count in beach swimming, in a deep water you already know you have not a ground where you can touch your foot and you swim according to it, in beach suddenly you can lose the ground and your pattern of swim while your foot touching the ground need a different style to make you swim again BUT sometime it's hard to make it.
Swimmers dying rates are higher than not swimmers but in this case the casualties occurred coz of neglect the warning issues may be some en route cyclone or typhoon make ocean so wild.
That's why we warn from elders DO not play with fire or water.

As said in post #5, It is not the Government's job to " BABYSIT STUPID PEOPLE ".

If people themselves go to get dead, then no one can help them.

WHen the government has clearly said that swimming is prohibited to high swells and stuff, then why the fck do you need to go in when you are clearly not an expert swimmer and are wearing shalwar kameez?

No matter which party you belong to, you just can't blame the government.

This incident just shows the Pakistani mentality, jo bhi ho jaye hum nay apni marzi chalani hai. Police walay ki maan ki ankh...

The government could help by building breakwaters and protected areas for swimming and wading and similar steps to improve the safety of the environment.

Pakistan Navy Aviation had to get involved with rescue ops. It was very serious

the tide and currents must have got very strong......shame that nobody was there to oversee and regulate beach traffic and warn people of the dangers

of course there werent..and where were the elder family members who failed to protect their children and be proper parents! dont these people have any common sense

what a horrible tragedy after a holy month

And then the govt should also provide a personal lifeguard to every stupid person in the vicinity, then it should also give a personal safety beacon light, a whistle, a life jacket and what not?

Point is, in these sort of times and with these sort of administrations, the best you can do is warn the people to stay the fck out of the water.

People swim all over the year, but this time the sea was pretty rough and a warning had been given.

BTW, I do think there is a protected area for swimming at Clifton (I went there quite a while back, maybe some Karachi resident can enlighten us).

Still I can't understand why so many people washed away with tidal waves? people got alerted even if there are so many of them, at max it should be 10 to 15 casualties not as many as they are now.

RIP to departed souls. :-(

The facilities provided can only be proportional to the funds available, but the basic point about providing safe and clean recreational facilities is one of the responsibilities of local government, is the one to keep in mind.

Yes they are the responsibilities of the govt, but what if the people constantly keep on ruining the facilities provided to them?

This 'khasma nu kha' attitude isn't going to get us anywhere.

Absolving the general public of everything and blaming it squarely on the govt isn't gonna get us anywhere either.

I can just imagine the scenario where the lifeguard and police say "Aap pani main na jayen khatarnaak hai" or "Is waqt pani main jana mana hai"...and the other guy replies "Yar main bara ustaad hoon" or "Tum kaun hotay ho bolnay walay, chal side par ho".

Even God Himself cannot help those who do not want to help themselves.
