British daily dares ‘Hindu nationalists’, reverts to using Bombay

LOL
whats in a name by which you call a rose by some other name will smell just as sweet- Shakespeare

.
I guess the paradox is that those "Hindu nationalists" probably treat English as their native tongue, which, somehow in turn, disqualifies them for being nationalists.

.
Initially I was not in favor of Bombay being renamed as Mumbai (using power!) ..Shiv sena after coming to power did only 2 things, built bridges (good job) and re-named streets/places/parks by the name of their idols including father and mother of Bal Thackery!!!!!...not much different than what Mayawati did in UP... ..

But over the period of time, I actually started liking it calling Mumbai..it sounds much sweeter than Bombay! But my grandpa used to call it Bombay until his last breath as for him it was too much of change at his age!

And, I still see Bombay High Court and Madras High Court didn't become party in the rechristening ceremony!

I am not in favor of Bombay, either. It sounds more like "bomb bay".

. .
Mumbai sounds much better after '92 blasts and 26/11 than 'BOMB'ay. Moreover going back to roots always give you a strange sense of satisfaction.
Let Brits live in delusions Who Cares

a member of the indian intelligentsia here.

this is what i use : bombay, poona, madras, calcutta, bangalore... to hell with the regional chauvinists.

It all comes down to Mother language and pronunciation .

Heck !! Same people can't Pronounce Kashmir . Some say Kaaashmir , others say Cashmir .

.
yes, every state is in a renaming spree, some of them genuinely stirred by RSS fanatics to show Hindu domination - I believe RSS wants to call Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar or something like that.

Some masterpieces:
Baroda - Vadodara!
Gulbarga - Kalabuaragi!
Trivandrum - Thiruvananthapuram!

Bombay, Poona, Madras, Bangalore - These are all simpler names.

. .
Hurr durr, let's not use the correct name for their financial capital, that'll sure show those pesky Hindu nationalists.

.
I don't know much about Mumbai/Bombay but some name changes can be pretty absurd. Persians demanded everybody start calling their country "Iran" because that's the way they say it. Same with Peking becoming "Beijing". It's like if Germany woke up on morning and started demanding everybody else call their country "Deutschland".
Why is it absurd to call names of places in your local native language? Why should they be called as per the Colonial times?Do you still think the British rules India or the elsewhere? The chinese,Iranians and Africans have a right to change the names of their places as per their native language.

Simple for the white british to pronounce ,why should native Bharatis use the same name given by their colonial masters?

**cough cough**

"madras high court", "indian institute of technology - bombay", "poona horse", "calcutta high court", "indian institute of management - bangalore".

**cough cough, cough cough cough ( i need strepsils )**

then it would have been a epic self goal because i think that name comes from bhagmati, who was the hindu queen of the muslim sultan, muhammad quli qutub shah... love jihad : :D

It has nothing to do with 'Hindu' nationalism. It is the name used by the original residents. Who happen to be Christian, Buddhist, Muslim and Hindu. Maharashtrians, the people of Maharashtra, speak a language Marathi. In this language, it has always been Mumbai.

Coming to the point of them using English as their native tongue, nothing could be further from the truth. Marathi is a compulsory language, which all Indians who stay in Maharashtra are taught in school.

The number of wannabe intellectuals has grown by the number, since the time their favourite party, the Congress has lost power across the country.
